"They've finally done it" says cubs fan, Alan Deutsch along with every other Cubs fan in the world. The Cubs achieved the unthinkable. They won the world series, breaking the longest championship drought in not only baseball history, but sports history. Very few fans can admit, truthfully, that they never wavered, lost faith, or doubted the Cubs over the years. It has been a long, slow road of continuous let down for Cubs fans until now. It has been 108 years since the Cubs last won the pennant which makes winning even that much more special.
A lot of things have happened since the Cubs last won the World Series. 108 years ago the United States of America was made up of only 46 states. Both the radio and the TV had not been invented yet. Only

9 MLB teams from 1908 still exist in their current from today. Only 3 NFL teams still exist today as they did back then. Alan Deutsch was in disbelief when I explained to him how long it’s really been. I was also astonished about all that had happened over the years since the Cubs last won the pennant. So many important world problems, controversies, and just interesting facts had gone by and the Cubs still hadn’t won. The world series game was played between the Cubs and the Indians.
Between these two teams the two longest championship droughts in sports history were presented in front of us. These teams were just playing for themselves… but they were playing for their cities. Playing to give their cities hope for the future. Playing to finally have their fans rightfully be proud to root for their teams. Dom Cirilli, a baseball trainer, and coach actually worked out with one of the now lower level Cubs prospects before he was signed. Cirilli said that he sent a message via text congratulating him on his victory. Cirilli told me Although he hasn’t been called up yet, it was still a special moment for him. For most people, if I had told them 5 years ago that the 2016 World series would be the Chicago Cubs against the Cleveland Indians, they would’ve called me crazy. These two teams have been through the worst of the worst over the …show more content…
years. True Cubs fans can be tough to find. To any Cubs fan out there who never wavered, lost faith, or doubted the cubs over the years, give them some respect for not jumping on the bandwagon of any other teams. Cubs fans have truly been dragged through the lowest of the low. They have come down a long slow disappointing road, and when they were told that it could get any worse… they were yet again, disappointed. Alan Deutsch is one of these people. When I spoke to him I was amazed that he never gave up in rooting for the Cubs. Not when his friends made fun of him, not when they had continuous losing seasons, and not when he felt like all hope was lost. Personally, I am almost always superstitious when one of my favorite teams is playing in a big game.
I wondered if any Cubs fans had any little superstitions that they followed throughout the Cubs playoff run. I asked Alan Deutsch this question, and his response was priceless. “Yes. I was very superstitious during the playoffs and especially during the World Series game. I wore the same hat, sat in the same chair, drank from the same glass, and even went to the bathroom 15 minutes before the scheduled start of each game!” was his response when asked if he was at all superstitious during the Cubs elimination games. I’m sure if you ask other cubs fans they’ll all have stories about their peculiar superstitions during the
games. Cubs fans have the right to be superstitious after all their history. Ask any real Cubs fan about the Curse of the Billy goat, or who Steve Bartman is, and you’ll get a full explanation. The curse of the Billy goat was a curse placed on the Cubs in 1945 by the Billy Goat Tavern owner, William Sianis. Steve Bartman’s incident was more recent. In 2003, Steve Bartman reached out and grabbed a ball out of a Cubs outfielder’s hands, that could’ve been the potential third out of the inning. After this the opposing team rallied and the Cubs lost the game, crushing their hopes and dreams. From then until about now, Steve Bartman hasn’t been able to show his face in public without people staring. The curse against the Cubs, is somewhat like the “Curse of the Great Bambino”. This curse was placed against the Boston Red Sox when they mistakenly traded away the great Babe Ruth to the Yankees. After this trade in 1917, the Red Sox did not win a world series from 1918, until just recently in 2004. The curse was broken and since then they have won the world series in 2007, and 2013. The Cubs are hoping that their luck can be just as fortunate. After a long miserable road, the Cubs have finally accomplished the impossible. The fans and players experienced something that they had never felt before. They won the world series. No other team has had a championship drought this long in the history of sports, and no other team will for a long time.
On July 27 1959, A new York attorney named William shea had an idea of putting a new baseball team in new York since the dodgers and giants had left for california. So on march 1st 1961 His wish was granted. The new York metropolitan baseball club or “the new York mets” were introduced into the national league. The name of the team was chosen by owner Joan Payson. The other names that were put into thought were the rebels, skyliners, nybs and avengers just to name a few.On April 11,1962 the mets played their first game in franchise history and lost 11-4 to the St Louis cardinals. The first season was a miserable one.Manager Casey Stengel led the mets to a 62-100 record,The worst record in major league history. After a couple of more losing seasons, The mets finally made a move and signed pitcher Tom “the franchise”Seaver, one of the best pitchers who ever played the game. They also picked up power hitting outfielders Donn Clendenon and Tommie Agee. Finally the mets looked like a baseball team.Entering the 1969 season, my father said the mets wewr 160-1 to win the World Series, but the mets shocked everyone winning the national league championship. Now, this is how the mets won their first world series, The batter was cleon Jones, after striking out manager Gil Hodges notices a black mark on the ball. The black mark was shoe polish. Putting shoe polish on the ball makes it spin more and makes it much easier to strike out a batter.
In 1951, the Yanks continued to enjoy success. However, as they welcomed in rookie newcomer Mickey Mantle, they lost Joe DiMaggio to retirement and Whitey Ford to the military for two years of service. With Ford off fighting the war, the pitching staff as a whole lowered the team ERA by more than half a run per game and also doubled th...
The New York Yankees lost to St. Louis in the 1926 World Series and came out in 1927 for revenge. (Geisler, 1) The Yankees opened the season on April 12th with an 8-3 victory over the Philadelphia Athletics and they never looked back. (Frommer, 5) The Yankees never fell out of first place after that first day and finished 19 games ahead of Philadelphia who won 91 games respectively. (New York Yankees, 3) An astonishing feat for today's strategic baseball moves, the '27 Yankees went all year without a single roster move. (Geisler, 1) With a tremendous team built by owner, Jacob Ruppert and General Manager, Ed Barrow, the scene was set for a big year. Certainly meeting the New York standards with a record of 110 wins and 44 losses the Yankees had many indiv...
In 1993, the Toronto Blue Jays went to the World Series as the American League Champion against the National League Champion the Atlanta Braves, the Series opened in Atlanta where Toronto lost their game one of the Series 3-1, faith was not lost as the Jays went on and win the next three games 5-4, 3-2, 2-1. By this time, the fans had real high faith, and even though the Braves dominated the fifth game 7-2, if the Blue Jays win one more the title is theirs, and so it was when the Jays won the sixth game 4-3 winning the 1992 World Series. Canadian Baseball had never been so successful before. When the 1993 season comes, the Blue Jays once again end up first place in their division with a 96-67 record and won all the playoffs games to advance to the World Series for a second time in a row against the National League Champions the Philadelphia Phillies. Th...
At this time in baseball history, the Chicago White Sox had the best player in the game on their team. Joe Jackson was simply known as a future Hall of Famer and the best to ever play at this time (Chadwick 35). He proved this by hitting .351 all season which led the Majors as well as hitting .356 his whole lifetime as a player which is still one of the highest averages today (Chadwick 36). However, the White Sox were no one man show they also had the top two pitchers in the league in Eddie Cicotte and Lefty Williams (Chadwick 35). By 1919, the White Sox had already made the World Series two times in a row. They had won the 1917 World Series, but lost in a heartbreaker in the 1918 World Series (Chadwick 35). It...

The Great War rages on. An influenza epidemic claims the lives of several Americans. But, the Boston Red Sox have done it again. Last night, in a 2-1 victory over the Chicago Cubs at Fenway Park (thanks to Carl Mays' three-hitter), the Boston Red Sox won their fifth World Series championship--amid death and disease, a reason to live ... Babe Ruth and the 1918 Red Sox. If I die today, at least I lived to see the Sox win the championship. For, it could be a long, long, time before this happens again.
Chicago Cubs baseball goes all the way back to April 25th, 1876 when they played the first game in the history of the Chicago National League Ball Club. However; at the time, they were not known as the “Cubs.” In general, they were known as the “White Stockings.” But a select few referred to them as the “Colts,” or “Orphans.” The team played in only five different locations in the 1800s because of the lack of places to play baseball at the time. As years went by, the league became popular, becoming one of the sports first dynasties. Chicago won six of the first eleven inaugural National League Championships (Cubs Timeline). In 1902, Frank Selee began managing Chicago to debut his managerial career. Just like managers, the name changed as well. A local newspaper penned the nickname “Cubs” for the first time. The name grew on people over time and was officially adopted in 1907. The year after that, victory arose in the city of Chicago. The season was filled with some of the greatest old-time baseball players. The batting line-up consisted of many good hitters and not jus...
... but with Hank Aaron and Eddie Mathews scoring over sixty homers. And Spahn and Burdette getting 42 pitching victories the Yankees still pulled through and won the world series by one game. Sadly Hank Aaron barely missed his opportunity to get the triple crown, leading baseball with 44 home run, and an RBI rating of 130. In a feat of old age that same season Warren Spahn won 23 games at the old age of forty two. As no surprise the team was sold, this time to a millionaire named William Bartholomay. and he had something in his sights, the city of Atlanta, their present home, for a larger television market for the team. He contracted the construction of the new stadium and announced the move to Atlanta, but the city of Milwaukee wasn’t losing them without a fight. They filed several lawsuits to attempt make them stay, but only managed to get them for one more season.
If you have ever met me, or know me, you would know that I love sports, and you would know my favorite sport of all time is baseball, and that my favorite sports team is Boston Red Sox. I am what you call a die-hard Red Sox fan; you can compare me as Red Sox fan to actor Jimmy Fallon’s character in the movie, Fever Pitch. My strong love for the Red Sox comes from my step-dad Phil. Phil has always been like a second father to me since he and my mom got together, back in early 2000s. Phil is always trying to teach and help me learn from my mistakes, and I have made my share of them. Nevertheless, I also cherish the moments I spend with him at Red Sox games. The experiences I have at Red Sox games are moments in my life, I will never forget, that I will always remember, One game in particular I most remember is my first Red Sox game at Fenway Park.

Television has affected every aspect of life in society, radically changing the way individuals live and interact with the world. However, change is not always for the better, especially the influence of television on political campaigns towards presidency. Since the 1960s, presidential elections in the United States were greatly impacted by television, yet the impact has not been positive. Television allowed the public to have more access to information and gained reassurance to which candidate they chose to vote for. However, the media failed to recognize the importance of elections. Candidates became image based rather than issue based using a “celebrity system” to concern the public with subjects regarding debates (Hart and Trice). Due to “hyperfamiliarity” television turned numerous people away from being interested in debates between candidates (Hart and Trice). Although television had the ability to reach a greater number of people than it did before the Nixon/Kennedy debate, it shortened the attention span of the public, which made the overall process of elections unfair, due to the emphasis on image rather than issue.
Certainly the behavior of baseball fans is insane. They wear their official team t-shirts and warm-up jackets to the mall, the store, the classroom, and, if they can get away with it, to work. Then, whenever the team offers a giveaway item, the fans rush out to get the roll-up hat, tote bag, or beer cooler offered that day .
