A man. A man who was a leader and known in society as an amazing person. He participated in helping a country live on and be strong. This man helped his people succeed and he was one of the most loyal people to his country and religion ever. But… was he a good person?. Although people usually don’t look or sound evil, they have evil on the inside that they don’t often show and John Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men relates to this in many ways. Cruelty in Of Mice and Men does not just show in physical ways, it also shows in racist ways towards Crooks, an African American working and living at the ranch. He keeps most things to himself and kind of keeps himself away from the people of the ranch because of racism that they give him. His fleeing
from people, and life in general, is shown in this quote from Steinbeck’s book, “Crooks had reduced himself to nothing. There was no personality, no ego—nothing to arouse either like or dislike” (Steinbeck 119). Crooks has gotten used to being left out and not as accepted at the ranch and he has been treated unfairly by many at the ranch when he is out of his cabin, so he doesn’t bother to go out much anymore. “You got no rights comin’ in a colored man’s room. You got no rights messing around in here at all” (Steinbeck 119). The cruelty towards Crooks in Of Mice and Men does not show very easily until you look inside and find out things about him and his life. Even the most caring and creative person in this story can be cruel. Lennie has his own characteristics and he can be cruel without even knowing it. He sometimes even kills things without trying, and this part of the book shows how George gets frustrated with Lennie because of his constant killing of animals: “Trouble with mice is you always kill ’em.” He paused. “Tell you what I’ll do, Lennie. First chance I get I’ll give you a pup. Maybe you wouldn’t kill it” (Steinbeck 47). On the outside, he is just a person with a brain disorder and no one would ever think that he could kill an animal, or even a human, but he kills animals and insects all of the time. Lennie, the nice and friendly man killed Curley’s wife in response to her screaming. This is evident here: “And then she was still, for Lennie had broken her neck” (Steinbeck 131). After this occurs, he is mad at Curley’s wife for being killed and this shows some cruelty that is hidden inside. Lennie also gets very mad after he kills a newborn puppy, but he did not do it on purpose. This is evident right after he killed the puppy: ‘“God damn you,” he cried. “Why do you got to get killed? You ain’t so little as mice.” He picked up the pup and hurled it from him” (Steinbeck 124). Lennie has a very caring personality, but on the inside, he actually has killed many living things and has been cruel. The man. The man who was an amazing leader and was very loyal to his country. That man was Adolf Hitler. People can seem great and amazing on the outside, but everyone has evil hidden inside of them no matter how great they seem. Whether its racism, or just random cruelty, people hide their cruelty unless they have a reason to show it. John Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men is a great example of this and their are many instances with characters that show cruelty.

Death With Dignity For several years you have been taking care of your grandma, who has been suffering in the hospital. You pray that she gets better. But day after day, you see the hurt in her eyes even though she tries to fight through it. You know that she won’t get better until you put her out of her misery and end her life.
In the words of Jack Kevorkian “In quixotically trying to conquer death doctors all too frequently do no good for their patients’ “ease” but at the same time they do harm instead by prolonging and even magnifying patients’ dis-ease.”. His excellent quote shows one that mercy killing can help a person stop suffering with a prolonged death. In Stienbecks novella Of Mice And Men Lennie falls victim to his impulses and makes himself suffer and George suffer the concequences. George reveals how mercy killing is necessary in some cases because it stops suffering, prevents worse from happening, and may help society continue working.
The harsh reality is one which hit everyone in America in the 1930. People found work hard to find and crime was on the uprise. This meant, unfortunately, that innocent people were the easy prey and, as we see in the Of Mice and Men, there were plenty of characters that were easy prey. Of Mice and Men characters have and do thing that make them vulnerable in way which do cause trouble. In this essay, that harsh reality and easy prey will be shown through to see which characters are the most vulnerable.
‘He was the kind of man – powerful of body, even tempered and not easily led.’ This quote is very straightforward and you understand that he is fair-minded. After this quote you think he sounds like a good man and a rule-follower; however you then get to the line ‘ he’s a sinner, a sinner not only against the moral fashion of the time but against his own vision of decent conduct’.
Several characters in the novel Of Mice and Men are presented with additional obstacles throughout the book. Whether because of color, sex, or disabilities, John Steinbeck purposefully did this to illustrate oppression. Of Mice and Men explores the effects of systemic oppression on women, African-Americans, and people with disabilities.
John Steinbeck explores human experience in the novella ‘Of Mice and Men’ in friendship, loneliness and marginalisation. He does this through the characters as explained thought the paragraphs below.
When you’re in a position of high authority, it comes with a great sum of power. Having a great deal of control can corrupt and can lead to the abuse of it. Abuse of power is using their power for their own benefit even if it may harm others. In the book Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, the effects of the abuse shown by Curley and Curley’s wife to the other characters will ultimately lead to a tragic end.
Other characters in Of Mice And Men, for example Crooks, are victims. of this forced isolation. Crooks is a black man in a predominantly white community. white area of the sand. Black people had been brought to America due to the Slave.

Discrimination was one of the issues that caused conflict in the novel “Of Mice and Men” by John Steinbeck. One example of discrimination in the novel comes in the form of racial discrimination against Crooks, as he is an African American. Another example of discrimination is gender discrimination against Curley’s wife. Finally, there is discrimination against mentally disabled people, which is evident in Lennie’s character. The ranch hands' actions and conversations demonstrated the racial discrimination against Crooks for his skin colour, gender discrimination against Curley’s wife for her gender, and prejudice against Lennie, who was mentally disabled individual. This prevented the characters from reaching their full potential and causes tragedy.
In the novel Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck there are many events in the plot of the story that occur that prove that when man is cruel to man, some peoples lives are negatively affected. One instance in where this is proven true is when the men on the ranch and Curley's wife are cruel and discriminative against Crooks causing him to be the one to mourn. An example of how the men are discriminative towards Crooks is that he is forced to live in a shack away from the bunkhouse and also Crooks says that "They play cards in there, but I can't play because I'm black. They say I stink" and "I ain't wanted in the bunkhouse." An example of when Curley's Wife is critical towards Crooks is when she looks into his room to see what Lennie and Crooks are doing and then she states, shaking her head, that they left the weak ones behind. Also, she threatens to have Crooks hung because a black man should never talk to a white woman the way he just had. As a result of all of these discriminatory acts against him, Crooks feels unwanted and lonely because of his color and placement on the farm. Also those examples are part of the theme of the novel, people need to accept and understand those different from themselves, which also helps to prove the interpretation of the quote. Another example in this novel that proves that when man is cruel to man, the lives of people are negatively affected is when Curley picks on and tries to hurt Lennie. Curley chooses to fight Lennie because he thinks he won't fight back but because George gets angry and tells Lennie to fight back, he does. George being angry is not the only negative effect that Curley's teasing had on man, but also now Lennie is angry and in danger of getting in trouble and Curley himself gets hurt.
A man who exhibits extraordinary bravery, firmness, fortitude, or greatness of soul, in any course of action, or in connexion with any pursuit, work, or enterprise; a man admired and venerated for his achievements and noble qualities.
Conflict, by definition, is a back and forth struggle between two opposing forces. In the literary work, Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck, it is clear, the protagonist, George Milton, undergoes many conflicts that lead to the novel’s overall purpose. Steinbeck weaves together George’s conflicts with others, himself, and with society to illustrate what the true meaning of friendship is.
The perception of good and bad is varied, but to be good or bad is very different. Many are misled by the term and so I will now define it. What us people call being good is genuinely triggered by actions or kind gestures. Actions as such serving your country regards killing to survive. Then you have kind gestures such as giving money to the homeless or to a charity. This is a sympathetic gesture so we class it as good.
