McCarthyism (noun): a campaign against alleged communists in the United States government. Salem Witch Trials (noun): a series of hearings and prosecutions of people accused of witchcraft. Are the McCarthy trials and the Salem Witch Trials really that different?
“In 1950, Joseph McCarthy made a public accusation that two hundred plus “card carrying” communists have become a part of the United States government.” (Kazan) “In the 1940s, Americans feared communism.” (Lorcher) The Soviet Union was growing in power. Paranoia enthused a communist threat. “The incoming communists had their passports taken. While other “communists” were jailed for refusing to accuse others. The hunt for communists was difficult for writers, and entertainers. Many were labeled communist and were not allowed to continue work anymore.” (Kazan) “McCarthy's accusations heightened political tension. Miller was found guilty for contempt of congress for his refusal. His sentence was later overturned.” (Miller, 1254) Communism was greatly feared in the 1940s, and around the same time, The Crucible was produced. Salem had established itself as a religious community. “Salemites considered the forest “The domain of Evil.” Both McCarthyism and The Salem Witch Trials were periods of hysteria. Fear was multiplied without reason, and together, Abigail and Joseph took advantage of the fear. They spread fear, hatred and evil among their environments. There were horrible consequences to those who were accused.”
