2.3 Cross-cultural Readjustment Culture shock during cross-cultural adjustment in a foreign country has drawn attention for many years. Recently reverse culture shock in readjusting to one's own culture have been highly focused. The process of cross-cultural readjustment or reentry into home country is a process equally as cross-cultural adjustment in a host country (Shibuya, 2003; Tohyama, 2008). Researchers have characterized the reentry process similarly. According to Adler (1981), “cross-cultural readjustment is the transition from a foreign culture back into one’s home culture” (p. 343). Sojourners have to adjust to their familiar environments after spending a period of time abroad. Maybarduk (2008) defined the term reentry adjustment as “the re-adaptation to the home culture after an extended sojourn abroad”. Sojourners commonly prepare to deal with adjustment difficulties in a host country, but they are unaware to face difficulties in adjusting into a familiar environment when returning home (p. 342).
Butcher (2002) described that reentry to home country is “a grieving process”. Sojourners grieve from the loss of relationship and experiences in the host country and at the same time they have to adjust to their home culture, societal expectations and reintegrate to the old relationship.
Adjustment is categorized into psychological and sociocultural. Psychological is associated with personality, identity, satisfaction level and the overall well-being, while sociocultural related to sojourners adjusting into host culture and interaction to host national (Mooradian (2004). Both types are used to describe entering new culture in the past studies. However, many researchers also applied psychological and sociocultural adjustment into the readjustment
Refugees share similar experiences and emotions when they move to a new country. The book Inside Out and Back Again splits these feelings into two categories, “inside out” and “back again”. Refugees from around the world experience these feelings. For instance, it is easy for a refugee to feel “inside out” when learning a new language, or they can feel “back again” when they find a familiar object that reminds them of their past. Many refugees mainly struggle with learning a new language, but to make them feel more comfortable, they can find satisfaction in items from their home land.
Migration has been found to have negative effects on mental health because of circumstances surrounding the move, circumstances of the actual passage, trouble adapting to the new culture, breaks in the migrant’s support system of friends and family, and disappointed expectations of social and economic acquisition.
A sudden change in one’s surroundings can result in culture shock. Culture shock refers to the anxiety and surprise a person feels when he or she is discontented with an unfamiliar setting. The majority of practices or customs are different from what a person is used to. One may experience withdrawal, homesickness, or a desire for old friends. For example, when a person goes to live in a different place with unfamiliar surroundings, they may experience culture shock. Sometimes it is the result of losing their identity. In the article “The Phases of Culture Shock”, Pamela J. Brink and Judith Saunders describe four phases of culture shock. They are: Honeymoon Phase, Disenchantment Phase, Beginning Resolution Phase, and Effective Function Phase. These phases denote some of the stages that exemplify culture shock. The four phases are illustrated in the articles “New Immigrants: Portraits in Passage” by Thomas Bentz, “Immigrant America: A Portrait” by Alejandro Portes and Ruben G. Rumbaut, “When I Was Puerto Rican” by Esmeralda Santiago, “Today’s Immigrants, Their Stories” by Thomas Kessner and Betty Boyd Caroli, and lastly, “The New Americans: Immigrant Life in Southern California” by Ulli Steltzer, and are about the experiences of some immigrants. This essay will examine the four phases of culture shock and classify the experiences of these immigrants by the different phases of culture shock identified.
“Successful adaptation can bring with it the opportunity for growth” (Marie, Colak). Like all refugees Ha’s adaptation to Alabama was difficult, so this lead to frustration and slower growth. Losing precious things and what you keep from your previous home determines your adaptation. Accepting what you loss and cherishing what you kept from your old home helps you move on and persevere. Losing things aren’t bad, cherishing what you still have and to move on helps you stabilize. Refugees lose things that are important to them, although always have things that are special that they cherish to move on, just like Ha in Thanhha Lai’s Inside Out and Back Again.
Throughout history, there have been various perspectives of multicultural differences. According to Meriam Webster (n.d.), culture is “the beliefs, customs, arts, institutions, and the thoughts or products of a particular society or group.” Unfortunately, African Americans, Native Americans, Italians, Irish, Jews as well as various other cultural groups have been profoundly discriminated against and negatively stereotyped (Good Therapy org.). With the frequent mingling of cultures in educational settings, the workplace, and in the social arena, we are bound to encounter cultural differences.

For newly arrived international students who are in their late adolescence developmental stage, the sources of acculturative stress often include academic pressures, language difficulties, feelings of inferiority, difficulties in adjusting to new food or cultural values, lack of support, perceived discrimination, and homesickness (Andrade, 2006). In addition, international students may experience little acceptance, tolerance, and understanding of their cultural practices by members of the host country, and in some cases, racial discrimination (Poyrazli & Lopez, 2007). It is also possible that international students themselves may be intolerant or discriminatory towards other international students or members of the host culture. These difficulties can contribute to international students’ loneliness, alienation, mistrust, powerlessness, and depression. Although members (e.g., new college students) of the host culture may be affected by such difficulties, the combination of acculturation stressors has been found to weigh more heavily on international students who have limited access to resources (Poyrazli & Lopez, 2007).
