He also got out his favorite book to read to the new baby, but the baby didn’t pay attention to Critter. The new baby cried a lot even when Critter made funny faces and told jokes. Critter tried to dress the new baby but it was hard. Mother had to change the baby when she smelled bad. Critter is confused at what he can even do with the new baby. Mom shows Critter several things he can do with her: cuddle her, rock her to sleep, tickle her, giver her a rattle, let her play with his finger, pull on his nose, and even take her for walks! She returns to her grandmother’s house with the baby, and since there are no kids allowed where her grandma lives, she has to be extra careful that the baby doesn’t cry. The reason that she went to her grandmother’s house is because that’s where she lives. Her mother left her a long time ago. Anyway, she spends the whole night taking care of the baby by feeding it with the formula provided in the bag, and changing its diapers. She soon gets really sick of it.
Baby narrates her story through her naïve, innocent child voice. She serves as a filter for all the events happening in her life, what the narrator does not know or does not comprehend cannot be explained to the readers. However, readers have reason not to trust what she is telling them because of her unreliability. Throughout the beginning of the novel we see Baby’s harsh exposure to drugs and hurt. Jules raised her in an unstable environment because of his constant drug abuse. However, the narrator uses flowery language to downplay the cruel reality of her Montreal street life. “… for a kid, I knew a lot of things about what it felt like to use heroin” (10). We immediately see as we continue reading that Baby thinks the way she has been living her life is completely normal, however, we as readers understand that her life is in fact worse then she narrates. Baby knows about the impermanent nature of her domestic security, however, she repeatedly attempts to create a sense of home each time her and Jules move to another apartm...

Humankind has always held a certain fascination for babies. We see a baby and our automatic response is generally one along the lines of “awwe”. New mothers often experience an increase in attention from strangers when going out in public with their new children. The bottom line is we love babies. Their big eyes and general helplessness evokes a certain almost maternal desire in each of us. Aside from the obvious psychological and evolutionary science behind these emotions, infancy is a universally significant time that transcends all cultures. The documentary Babies choses to explore this time by examining four newborns and their mothers in Nambia, Mongolia, the United States, and Japan.
A bus carrying several clinical students from the local college pulls up in front of the nursing home. The students begin to unload some boxes which contain puppies and kittens ranging in age from three to six months. Once inside, the students begin to pass the puppies and kittens out to the patients that are waiting expectantly in the recreation room. Some patients are alone, some are in groups, but all are delighted to see the animals arrive. As the animals are being passed out, the patients begin smiling, laughing, and talking to the animals. They stroke their coats, play with them, and feed them snacks that they have saved for this occasion. While the patients are interacting with other students and staff, two of the students begin making notes on the activities that are taking place in the room. The patients, staff, and students are clearly enjoying themselves, but there are greater benefits to be found here.

I want you to think about her excitement to have a home and Hailey’s excitement to have a new pet to love. Now I want you to think about Hailey receiving the devastating news that her puppy had to be euthanized and Daisy’s fear as she was taken from her owner’s hands and put to death.

“’How can anybody in his right mind be against science?’ asked Crosby.’ I’d be dead now if it wasn’t for Penicillin,’ said Hazel. ‘And so would my mother.’ ‘How old is your mother?’ I inquired. ‘A hundred and six. Isn’t that wonderful?’ (Vonnegut 231).
The French documentary Babies shows the first year of development of four different babies who live in four completely different environments. The film follows Ponijao, a little girl from Namibia, Bayar, a little boy from Mongolia, Mari, a girl from Tokyo, and Hattie, a girl from San Francisco. Even though the babies live in very dissimilar parts of the world, their physical, cognitive, and social development seem to all follow a set pattern. On the other hand, the babies learn to do some activities distinctive to their environment by watching their parents and siblings. Therefore, Babies provides evidence to support both the nature and nurture sides of the debate.
This article is about whether a person's psychological and behavioral tendencies are established by traumatic events an ancestor has been through. A molecular biologist, Moshe Szyf, and a neurobiologist, Michael Meany, began to experiment on mother rats to determine if postnatal inheritance had an effect on an animals' glucocorticoid receptors. The findings were quite interesting, baby rats with good mothering had the normal number of glucocorticoid receptors unlike the baby rats with bad mothering who lacked the sufficient number of glucocorticoid receptors. In order to prove their theory, Meany performed a second experiment. The baby rats were switched from their original attentive mothers to inattentive mothers and vice versa. Once again,
Soon, he caught the attention of a young pregnant woman who was standing in-front of the bookshelf and checking out the book of “New Parents Advice” with his husband. The women is around 30-35 years old, wore a low-heeled shoes with a big belly; while her husband showed people a mature feeling with his beard. And it is hard to tell how old is he. I can hear their conservation clearly since they were standing behind the bookshelf next to me. The couple was having a conservation about how to divide the work on taking care the upcoming baby in the future. Their conservation is full of love and with an air of expectancy. She always touched her belly gentlely and stretched the top of her head toward the ceiling while she was reading the book of with his husband. Their simile told me that she is so excited to meet their new born baby. However, her sentiment and emotion immediately affected by the disturbing atmosphere. The boy
On Sunday afternoons, our “family day”, we’d often go to the mall, just to satisfy Mom’s shopping urges. After about three boring stores, my dad and I would sneak out of a clothing store and he’d take me to one of the coolest stores in the mall. Fluffy balls would run around inside a glass box while I struggled to reach over, being only 6. Daddy would pick me up, hover me over the opening and I’d reach in and feel the puppies’ soft brown and white fur moving underneath my fingertips. “One day.” he said, winking. Escaped from the dreadful stores and secured into my king’s arms, I was happiest that I’ve ever been.
The door is opened hurriedly after three to four rings by a tired looking Shazia, she motions me to follow her to the kitchen where I see that she is trying to cook lunch for her brother and sister. A second later the house is filled with Shazia’s sister Ailia voice shouting “mom, mom”, subconsciously calling her mom while her brother Hussein is chasing her all over the house. After a lot of shouting by Shazia, Ailia and Hussein finally sit on the table to have their lunch. Looking at Shazia watching over her siblings, taking care of them and making them eat food in a way reminds me of a mom taking care of her children. Just then the phone rings and immediately Shazia, Hussein and Ailia run to get the phone saying, “it’s mom, it’s mom,” Shazia being the oldest gets the phone first and immediately her face brightens listening to her mom’s voice on the other end. To my surprise Shazia acts totally different with her mom on the phone, she tells her that everything is fine and her brother and sister are behaving very well, she does not want her mom to take any tension while she is having a baby. She hangs up excitedly telling her brother and sister that they will have a baby that they can play with very soon while telling me that her mom was about to leave for the hospital because of labor pains.
Before taking this course I already had a prior knowledge on infant and toddler development being a child development and family relations major. I have worked hands on with children in this age range and from previous courses know a lot about their physical growth and development. I knew that baby’s had poorly developed muscles in the beginning stages of life, but I didn’t know how long it took to get the muscles to develop. When holding a child we were always taught to support the neck and never let it just flop around. It was interesting to find out that even though a baby might be able to lift its head at one month its neck muscles are not fully developed until three months. By the time a child reaches two years of age their baby fat will start to disappear and be replaced by muscle from their constant movement like running and jumping.
