Science Fiction is a genre of speculative fiction that has evolved. This genre is used as a form of escape from the current living conditions, as it often reflects the current mindset of a society. Now, in contemporary culture the amount of utopian literature has decreased whereas dystopias proliferate. Many Science Fiction works depict different worlds set in some unforeseen future, where some form of humanity is lost. This paper will argue that Science Fiction is the best way for us to see our future and better reach utopia. First, I will define Science Fiction, and its role in our society. Like I’ve previously stated, Science Fiction often reflect the author’s own refracted image of their hopes and wishes or fears (Claeys 167), and their writing depend on their optimism for the future. In addition, Science Fiction also reflect the current mindset of society. In the early 20th century, the genre had a more positive image of the future “in which scientific progress had made the world a better place” (Gunn par. 9). However, by 1950, “[t]he post-war period of rocket science, Cold War conflicts, and governmental hegemony created a hotbed for literature dealing directly with dissolutions ranging from personal to global issues…and [this lead to] utopias… steady decline” (Steble 91). The stories now implemented more dystopian concepts since science “was no longer the hero” (Gunn par. 9). This is appropriate considering that we are living in a time where different communities are protesting against their own governments, there is a larger and noticeable gap between the rich and poor, and we are undergoing a global recession (Klus par. 8). Another example of how Science Fiction works are portraying our current situation are the multiple stories of natural disasters. There has been an increase of these types of stories because many fear that our world may be destroyed due to our neglect of earth’s ecosystems. In literature there are over 20 different genres of reading, and each of them contains many similarities and differences. Science fiction, arguably one of the most popular genre’s, is also one of the hardest to understand, however there are certain elements/characteristics that can easily determine if a book is or is not science fiction. The characteristics that make up science fiction are, advancements in technology and the application of advanced technology. In books such as The Veldt and Fahrenheit 451 both technological advancements and there application play a crucial role on determining that these books fall into the science fiction genre.
Literature and film have always held a strange relationship with the idea of technological progress. On one hand, with the advent of the printing press and the refinements of motion picture technology that are continuing to this day, both literature and film owe a great deal of their success to the technological advancements that bring them to widespread audiences. Yet certain films and works of literature have also never shied away from portraying the dangers that a lust for such progress can bring with it. The modern output of science-fiction novels and films found its genesis in speculative ponderings on the effect such progress could hold for the every day population, and just as often as not those speculations were damning. Mary Shelley's novel Frankenstein and Fritz Lang's silent film Metropolis are two such works that hold great importance in the overall canon of science-fiction in that they are both seen as the first of their kind. It is often said that Mary Shelley, with her authorship of Frankenstein, gave birth to the science-fiction novel, breathing it into life as Frankenstein does his monster, and Lang's Metropolis is certainly a candidate for the first genuine science-fiction film (though a case can be made for Georges Méliès' 1902 film Le Voyage Dans la Lune, his film was barely fifteen minutes long whereas Lang's film, with its near three-hour original length and its blending of both ideas and stunning visuals, is much closer to what we now consider a modern science-fiction film). According to the author of “The End of Science Fiction”, Lisel Mueller, our creative innovations have come to a halt. This is a four stanza, free verse poem describing how the human race has advanced some much, so fast, that we have become dull and interesting. Mueller uses parallelism, metaphors,allusions, and imagery to help emphasize her point on how it is important for the human race to become more creative to make the world even better.

Conclusively, dystopian texts are written to provide a warning about future times. Authors and directors use a variety of techniques to put their idea forward and have an impact of the audience. Rules that the chosen texts exhibit include that citizens have a fear of the outside world and all citizens adhere to a strict set of rules, but there is a main protagonist who scrutinises the governments or society’s nature. The rules that authors and directors use to put forward their messages of the moral issues human cloning and relying too much on technology and instinctively perusing traditions are evident throughout all three texts.
Kurt Vonnegut’s science fiction, short story, “Harrison Bergeron” satirizes the defective side of an ideal, utopian American society in 2081, where “everyone was finally equal” (Vonnegut 1). When you first begin to read “Harrison Bergeron”, through an objective, nonchalant voice of the narrator, nothing really overly suggests negativity, yet the conclusion and the narrator's subtle description of the events show how comically tragic it really is. Why do we fear the unknown? In the process of answering this question, science-fiction genre films successfully capture the history of American society at distinct points in time. The genre is so closely linked to social and historical contexts that its development relies solely on this connection. Sci-fi myths and conventions have remained static for decades, and the only measurable change in the genre lies in the films’ themes (Gehring 229-230). For example, Robert Wise’s The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951) argues that fear of the unknown is a flaw in human nature and criticizes the social paranoia of post-war, 1940s America. Conversely, Steven Spielberg’s Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977) views the human existence through more positive outlook, wherein society can overcome such fear; this optimism reflects the escapist beliefs of the 70s. When juxtaposed, the films’ themes demonstrate the evolution of the sci-fi genre by expressing different social attitudes towards conventions such as foreign beings, unfamiliar technology, and unusual scientists. The films also represent the genre during two major aesthetic periods in cinema—the post-classical and the late modernist eras, respectively—but nonetheless serve a greater purpose in measuring America’s social progress.
The book Fahrenheit 451, by Ray Bradbury illustrates a dystopia of what Bradbury believes might eventually happen to society. This is extensively referenced to in Captain Beatty’s monologue lecture to Guy Montag explaining how Bradbury’s dystopia came to be, and why books are no longer necessary to that society and therefore were completely removed and made illegal. Ray Bradbury’s main fears in the evolution of society can be broken down into three ideas; loss of individuality, overuse of technology, and the quickening of daily life. If society goes on as it is, Bradbury is afraid that media will be more brief, people will become less individual, life will be more fast paced, minorities will have too much voice, and technology will become unnaturally prominent everyday life.
Dystopian fiction is a type of fiction that is often described as a “nightmare” world, where society is mainly considered by domination and cruelty. In the novel “Blindness”, written by Joe Saramago and the movie “Elysium” directed by Neill Blomkamp, there were important and common characteristics that they both demonstrated of the dystopian societies. Both protagonist in the movie and novel show many similarities and as well as differences. In both the novel and the movie, the citizens live in a dehumanized state and the natural world has been banished and distrusted. These similarities and differences will be discussed in relation to today’s society.

Science fiction never ceases to amaze me as I take great enjoyment in exploring these creative universes. I have always had a great interest in military science fiction for its take on technological innovation and critical analysis. Military science fiction in general is very speculative about future of technology and warfare. The military science fiction genre also serves as a critique of contemporary politics as it deals with many of the same issues that go on today. This has made military science fiction one if the most well respected genres of science fiction for it ability to indirectly criticize modern society. My Integrated Project explores the relationship between how technology that has arisen from war has been some of the most innovative and why war has become an unshakeable aspect of human existence.
Science fiction somehow manages to place human characters in situations where the ideas and the thoughts of science and morality are intertwined. Science fiction must have some idea components and some human components to be successful. This novel seems to be a contrast to the believers in technological progress as it presents a colorful, but depressing and desolate future. The loss of individuality due to technological advances becomes a major theme in cyberpunk. This presents a dismal view of the individual in society. The cyberpunk genre developed from “a new kind of integration. The overlapping of worlds that were formerly separate: the realm of high tech, and the modern pop underground” (p. 345) 1. Neuromancer not only falls into this category, it may be the first cyberpunk novel ever written.
In Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World, truth and happiness are falsely engineered to create a perfect society; the belief of the World Controllers that stability is the the key to a utopian society actually led to the creation of an anti-utopian society in which loose morals and artificial happiness exist. Huxley uses symbolism, metaphors, and imagery to satirize the possibiliy of an artificial society in the future as well as the “brave new world” itself.
