Conclusion In conclusion, the critical thinking is a process which requires well-developed cognitive abilities in problem recognition, clinical decision- making, prioritization, clinical implementation and reflection (Turkel, Marvelous, Morrison, Sigletary, 2016). Although this skill is primarily developed through practice and acquired experience, there is evidence that initial training in critical thinking should be initiated by educators as early as in nursing schools. Therefore, the responsibility to promote and provide proper training system to recognize the importance of critical thinking lays on the lap of Advanced Nursing Practice. Moreover, it is imperative to keep in mind that as Benner's theory identifies stages in career development through one's achievements in professional arena critical thinking never cease to continue to grow. Thus, the expert nurses ought to take under their professional wings novice professionals to promote, encourage and guide through a clinical learning process to be well prepared, competent workforce facing evolving and challenging healthcare. With that in mind, the critical thinking concept has been my passion for last few years because I have experienced the caring attitude of expert nurses in my beginning professional years as well as the unconcerned approach which has motivated me to follow the footsteps of the ones who made a positive impact on my career. A critical thinking task that staff on our unit are frequently challenged with is treating low blood glucose levels, which are considered to be a blood glucose level less than 80 mg/dl. The flow chart that follows is what our diabetic educators would like to see being done by nurses to address low blood glucose levels. Although the flow chart is straightforward and easy to follow, nurses often use nursing wisdom, which is based on their knowledge and experience (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2012). For example, rather than giving orange juice or one tube of glucose gel and rechecking a patient’s blood glucose in 15 minutes, nurses may wait for a breakfast tray to arrive and recheck a patient’s blood glucose after breakfast. Possible risks include a patient not eating his or her breakfast and their blood sugar continuing to drop.

Reflection and analysis of critical incidents is widely regarded as a valuable learning tool for nurses. Practice requires us to explore our actions and feelings and examine evidence-based literature, thus bridging the gap between theory and practice (Bailey 1995). It also affords us the opportunity to change our way of thinking or practicing, for when we reflect on an incident we can learn valuable lessons from what did and did not work. Nursing theory can be defined as a conceptualization of some aspect of reality that pertains to nursing. The conceptualization is articulated for the purpose of describing, explaining, predicting, or prescribing nursing care (Smith & Parker, 2015). During the completion of my BSN, I gained knowledge on the very basics of nursing theory. Now during my completion of my MSN, it has been an eye opening experience to view nursing theory and its application to the nursing profession.
When I retired three years ago from the United States Air Force as a Production Superintendent with 25 years of service, I was an expert in my field. During technical school I put in the classroom and study time on book materials and lectures to learn as much as I could. During the hands on experience I watched and duplicated what the instructors were teaching and asked questions when I did not understand. When I actually started working on aircraft and moving through the ranks, that’s when the true learning started. I was learning by experience. As I gained more and more experience I became an expert. Learning by experience is a lifelong learning process of success and failures. One of the greatest learning tools that can be used with life experiences is reflective thinking. As I start to learn and as I progress through my second career, reflection will be an important tool that I will use in what I hope to become; an expert nurse.
