As previously discussed in class, critical thinking is the process of reasoned judgement, and ensuring people make a decision which are both purposeful, as well as, reflective. Critical thinking is a crucial skill not only in law enforcement, but our daily lives. For example, individuals use critical thinking skills to decide what school they want to get their education, or participating in sports. An example where I implemented critical thinking skills was in my high school band. In high school I played the trombone in our concert band. When I was in grade 12, I got the opportunity to conduct one of the songs we were playing for our spring concert, a John Williams mashup featuring songs from Star Wars, Indiana Jones, and Pirates of the Caribbean.
As the conductor, I had to decide when certain instruments should be emphasized over others during certain areas of the song. Even though the songs are already created, each individual has there on notes to follow, it was my job to piece it all together, and ensure the transitions from each song was smooth. There were many times where I believe I was making the wrong choice creatively, consequently leading for the end product to sound poor. Sometimes I found myself being biased towards certain parts because I deemed them as unimportant, but later realized each part, no matter how small matters when they are played all together. In the end the performance and quality of this piece was a success. Applying critical thinking skills helped me when producing this performance piece. It allowed me to analyze the piece, and understand how each role plays a part. After conducting this song, it improved my trombone playing because I was able to understand the bigger picture, and realized how much effort it takes to produce a song. Even though this is example does not specifically relate to law enforcement, critical thinking skills are still important are to implement in our daily choices. Without applying these skills, I can infer the outcome would not have been as successful.
