English class has not always been a strong suit of mine. I tend to struggle when it comes to learning literary terms and understanding passages. This week though, I have been able to comprehend concepts gone over in the material, as well as understanding how those concepts are applied in works. The first thing we covered this week was rhetorical situations. When I first read the title I thought back to Junior year of High School when I learned about rhetorical squares. This was not my strong suit, which caused me to worry a little bit about this material. Once we got into the material about rhetorical situations I realized that the way it was described made sense and was easier to comprehend. In order to overcome this challenge you should apply your narrative tool box, which should consist. of ways to add emotion, detail, suspense, structure, and more to your story. For example, some of the tools you may want to include would be dialogue, action verbs, vivid description, diction and syntax, and reflection. All of these tools have different roles though in a story and you can see how each are used to provide depth to a work in the essay by Jean Brandy titled Calling Home. Dialogue is used to provide insight into people and relationships in a work. Action verbs contribute to the drama and create a picture of what is being told. Vivid description captures where the scene is taking place. Diction and syntax provide structure to a work, with word choice and placement. Reflection provides an example, your thoughts, and feelings pertaining to your story.. Many tools are used by those who create short stories in order to achieve their goals and get their messages apart, thought it must be done carefully and quickly as they aren’t granted the same leniency to drag it out as exists with novels. My development as a writer has flourished throughout this semester. The first week of this fall semester started out with writing responses from our readings in the textbook. Looking back through and analyzing my reading responses at the semester to now; I noticed a substantial improvement in not only my grammar skills, but also my summarizing, and in-depth studying of writing adeptness. Another way I have progressed this semester is the vocabulary of my writing has significantly improved and become more scholarly. Another advancement I noticed was that the content of my work has matured, along with my organizational adeptness.

Throughout the entire semester I’ve found difficulty and ease within assignments, readings, blogs, and attendance. At times I over think a certain assignment or reading and underestimate my abilities. With the help of sources such as the handbook, writing center, materials, and your advice as well as my peers I think that I’ve overall achieved a good grade in this class and I hold high hopes for myself in continuing this semester.
Being deeply interested in a story is something many readers achieve. Have these readers ever wondered the true reason as to why they are so involved in these stories? The writer has to consider how the story must be told, what the best possible way to convey his or her ideas is, and what effect it must have on a reader. To draw the reader's attention, literary devices such as irony and foreshadowing are utilized by authors. The writer retains interest through proper use of these elements.
This introductory year in English has resulted in various mindsets; some may interpret the curriculum as demanding and highly unpleasant while others relished this year as optimal. Based on my experiences in Mrs. Cefalu’s class, this has been the crème de la crème of the entire English curriculum. Essentially, my freshman year has vastly outcompeted all my former English classes by interminable miles. I would foremost endeavor to greatly thank Mrs. Cefalu for innovating an unorthodox, amusing experience for me and every soul fortunate to experience this class. For the last two years, my teachers rather performed one, sole task: assert their English syllabus rather than express it. They strangely lacked a key fragment that enhanced learning
I began this class with very limited knowledge about how to annotate analyze a piece of work. Previously, I most likely would have simply read the essay without taking notes. After taking this class, I am properly equipped with the skills to annotate and analyze a piece of work. The growth between my first few attempts at annotation and my more recent ones are stupendous. It is apparent I had no idea what I was doing at the beginning of the year, but by the end, I have more mastery over figurative language techniques and how to identify them.
Rhetorical Situation is something that all writers do in order to summon an audience in their writing. When I think about my own writing, I think about how the rhetorical situation has helped shape my own writing, I can recall specific essays such as my college application that really exhibits how the rhetorical situation has helped me get my point across and shape my writing. Last year when I was applying to multiple colleges I had to write an essay that would show the people in admissions why I should be accepted into their school. I remember specifically the essay that I had to write for the University of Central Florida college application where I pulled out everything that I had in me to make it the best essay possible. Over the course of this semester I learned a lot about myself as a writer. This English 101 class has really allowed me to expand my essay structure and ways of thinking. This was my first college writing course and it has given me much more freedom when writing because in high school I felt limited and like what we were writing was not very important. In high school I would write essays to just to fulfill the required word or page count and to a degree I still feel like this but maybe that is why I am an engineering major but in this course I actually was able to express my ideas and for the first time really test the limits of my writing capabilities. I really enjoyed being able to incorporate my voice more in my essays and I believe that I developed my own personal style a bit from this. At the beginning of the semester my writing was quite choppy and there was plenty of room for improvement in the overall flow of my essays. Now, I use several different tactics such as outlining to create better connections between paragraphs. I believe I was able to move beyond many of the high school ways of writing and make general improvements to my essays.
How is it going? Today I wanted to let you know what is going on in English class. Right now we are reading the book, The Little Prince. There are multiple different concepts to apply to The Little Prince, but the concepts that I felt were most important to the story, were allegory, and the use of satirical characters.
A “narrative” is defined as being a “written or spoken account of connected events” (“Narrative”). Narratives come in various forms. For instance, in English class many of the short stories we read are narratives. However, movies, television shows and songs, are also examples of narratives. Even our lives are considered our own personal narratives in which we are the writer, the main character and often times the reader. The writings of our narratives help us make sense of some of the traumatic events we face throughout our lives (Gobodo-Madikizela and van der Merwe 2). In some cases, we make sense of these events by reading or listening to other people’s narrative.
Since the first day of this course, I learned new things every week that I hadn't learned before such as how to use APA style of citations, How to write a thesis and how to differentiate between the strong and weak source. I've made many mistakes with my assignments, so I will do my best to avoid them and will work to improve my skills by reading more in English. The most things I loved are writing an essay and the reading assignments as it helped me develop my critical thinking and reading, and substantive response. I will try to apply all these moral lessons I learned during reading assignments to my life.
I thought what I learned in this class was a lot more than I learned this semester. It being my second to last semester, I’m glad I ended up taking this class. I found a new appreciation for Renaissance, I walked into the class not knowing if I was going to like it and ended up really appreciating what I took from it. Works like Volpone, Faustus, The Alchemist, Faerie Queene and that does not do the poetry justice. Poetry such as The Flea and Shakespeare’s poems were ones that would stick with me in a special way. It is rare when I like works we read in classes, they normally are forgotten in a few weeks; but, like a class I took from Henson – we read all good works and I will continue to read them annually.
Overall, learning in this English class was really fun, I enjoyed learning new experiments on how to look at little details as clues and overview old lessons that I should have remembered from high school. From my experience, all you need to do is show up in class, don’t get nervous, make friends with new people, listen to the lecture, and most importantly, have fun.
