The present paper is an effort to deal with the exhaustive analysis of Jhumpa Lahiri’s fictional writings from a cultural perspective that demonstrates that she has addressed herself to all the issues associated with expatriate experience. It also aims to explore the novels of the author that strike largely a common chord as regards the diasporic experience. Throughout these stories Jhumpa Lahiri writes of the struggles Indians have building new relationships while trying to assimilate to American culture; Lahiri illustrates that in order to strengthen any relationship, one must display compassion, respect, and honesty.

Although Lahiri was born in England and raised in the United States and her parent’s still carried an Indian cultural background and held their believes, as her father and mother were a librarian and teacher. Jhumpa Lahiri has the ability to interconnect the lives and perceptions you see within her characters whether they’re from India or America. Take with her story “Interpreter of Maladies” she was able to show multifaceted characters in the form of Mr. Kapasi and Mrs. Das and their alike strains in their lives. What is so unique about her storytelling is her usage of a third person narration, through the eyes of Mr. Kapasi. Within Lahiri’s story, we are presented with a family the Das having an exploration vacation in India while being driven around by their interpreter tour guide driver Mr. Kapasi. She’s able to demonstrate the theme about romanticizing and lack of communication throughout the story showing her character nature faults.
The Das parents’ negligent relationship with their children in Clear Light of Day mirrors India’s independence from Britain. Before their deaths, Mr. and Mrs. Das were preoccupied and inattentive to their four children, Raja, Tara, Bim, and Baba. They spent most of their time at the club, playing “their daily game of bridge” (Desai 50). This pastime is so important to them that they neglect to take care of their kids. Bharati Mukherjee’s story, “Two Ways to Belong in America”, is about two sisters from India who later came to America in search of different ambitions. Growing up they were very similar in their looks and their beliefs, but they have contrasting views on immigration and citizenship. Both girls had been living in the United States for 35 years and only one sister had her citizenship. Bharati decided not to follow Indian traditional values and she married outside of her culture. She had no desire to continue worshipping her culture from her childhood, so she became a United States citizen. Her ideal life goal was to stay in America and transform her life.
