December 7th, 1941 is a day that lives in infamy and changed the course of American history. Despite the United States’ trepidation and hesitation about entering World War II, the deadly attack on Pearl Harbor influences President Roosevelt to declare war on the Empire of Japan, to claim, “that our people, our territory and our interests are in grave danger.” The vast majority of modern American citizens view World War II as the pivotal moment of the 20th century, when the forces of good (the Allies) defeat evil (The Axis Powers). Joseph Heller’s Catch-22 satirically dissects this popular notion about World War II, and humorously exposes the ineffective bureaucratic and immoral profit-driven nature of the American war effort. Starting with the economic collapse that preceded World War II, Heller describes how profit driven America acts in self-interest, avoiding danger and risk at a much higher clip than their allies. While in the Air Force, Doc Daneeka does not uphold his agreement to the Hippocratic oath: “to remember that he has “special obligations to all fellow human beings, those sound of mind and body as well as the infirm” (Hippocratic Oath). The inherent nobility and altruism normally associated with a soldier or a physician is nowhere to be found in Doc Daneeka. Today, in schools and textbooks, the American people laud the United States Armed Forces and government for its honorable motive and deliberate course of action during World War II. Published in 1961, Joseph Heller’s Catch-22 is a satire of war with a twist. Heller wrote his narrative nonlinearly. Although certain critics described the novel as “disorganized, unreadable and crass”, the mismatched chronology complements Heller’s style of writing and draws the reader’s interest. One key point of Catch-22, the catch-22 paradox, makes use of the nonlinear structure to encircle the reader in the contradictions. In addition, Heller’s style of writing provides a point of viewing different from most novels. While the narrative may seem complex and overwhelming at first, the reader learns to appreciate the subtleties of Heller’s labyrinthine plot.
At what point do the qualities of an antihero become heroic? Joseph Heller’s Catch-22 follows the experiences of protagonist and noted antihero Captain John Yossarian, a bombardier of the 256th Squadron of the Air Force stationed on the island of Pianosa during World War II. Frequently opposed by the immoralities and illogic of war and military bureaucracy and haunted by the deaths of men in his squadron, Yossarian is overcome by the paranoia that “they‘re trying to kill [him]” (26), and constantly avoids his militant duties in effort to stay alive. Due to his seemingly foremost concern of self-preservation, avoidance of responsibilities and cowardice, Yossarian is commonly perceived as an antihero. However, the goodness of his character is revealed through his moral consideration of others, the way his fellow men admire him, and his reactions to the corruption he discovers in the military system. Thus, although Yossarian does not possess the typical characteristics of a traditional hero, his inherent concern for the well-being of others and defiant acts ultimately prove his heroism.

He used rhetorical devices and strategies such as anaphora, repetition, and amplification, in order to achieve his purpose of informing the people of the United States of the attack on Pearl Harbor the day before, to persuade the people to support the war effort, and to remember those innocent lives lost.
Catch 22 by Joseph Heller is a complex and intricate novel. Heller uses many themes, does not have the story line in chronological order and often uses irony in his descriptions. Many of the themes can be compared to other literature. One of the themes that can be compared is fear in war. The idea is that the evils and cruelty of war can make a grown man go back into a "fetal" state. This can be seen in The Ball Turret Gunner by Randall Jarrell and can be compared to the metaphor used in chapter five of Catch 22. In this chapter Yossarian talks about the tight crawl space which led to the plexiglass bombardier’s compartment.

Captain John Yossarian, the protagonist of Catch-22, functions as an anti-hero. Unlike your typical classical hero, such as Odysseus, Yossarian is the complete opposite. Yossarian is simply a man of common birth with no godly privileges or qualities bestowed upon him. His humorous displays of carelessness and impulsive reactions in search of pleasure (definitely not involving pleasure from serving his country) heavily contrast the qualities of a hero.

The scene takes place in New York City. The speaker states, "In life, experience is a great teacher. In Scotch, Teachers' is the great experience." This is a recollection of a whiskey ad, and brings to mind that experience is common to those in the military and particularly those who were taught to recall that, "To close with the enemy and destroy him." On the topic of Catch-22, its author Joseph Heller posed the question “What does a sane man do in an insane society?” (BBC). In many ways we cannot fully empathize with this question nor with the novel’s main character Yossarian until we have experienced the extent of the futility and absurdity of Catch-22, but even more so, until having been overcome by its complexity. Both ideologically and in terms of its structure, Catch-22 is an incredibly complex piece of literature. Yet simultaneously, the themes at its core are fairly simplistic— something Yossarian recognizes when he says “he was moved very deeply by the absolute simplicity of this clause of Catch-22” (46).
