Alternatives to Crisis of Faith There are many reasons why people fall in love. For instance, they see a beautiful face or a slim, toned, tan beach body. Most people have no understanding of what is behind those outward attributes and they often have a lapse of good judgement pertaining to what is on the inside. For Brad Schaeffer in John Updike’s “Made in Heaven”, Jeanette Henderson’s bold announcement of faith is what caught his eye, but also caused his crisis of faith (Curtis, 1998, pp. 344-356). If there is ever a time for people to be honest with each other, it is during marriage. It is a partnership that has to have communication, understanding, and the most important component, God. He finds out too late that she is not nearly as religious as he wants her to be. The Bible states, “Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers. For what partnership has righteousness with lawlessness? Or what fellowship has light with darkness” (2 Corinthians 6:14, ESV)? In addition, Brad can avoid even more heartache before they get married, by attending pre-marital counseling. Of course, this is dependent upon whether Brad decides that she is still the one for him as well as if she tells him her position on the salvation of her soul. In short, Brad is too quick to act on a phrase as simple as, “the salvation of my soul.” He can avoid heartache and sorrow when he chooses to follow God’s Word and prays before acting on a whim. The Bible states, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths” (Proverbs 3:5-6, ESV).
