Criminology is a social science that emerged in the 18th century; it began as a break away from the oppressive monarchy system. The idea of criminology came from social philosophers during the age of Enlightenment, with this shift in society people began to question traditional thinking of the time and instead of the power of the law held by a select few it was to be given to the masses. Criminology is the study of the criminal mind and the social context that can give rise to it; since the beginnings of criminology there have been many theories that have attempted to do just that. The reason why there are no theories that can accurately define crime and deviants is because of the contradictory nature of crime and people. Today this limitation is recognised and the modern justice system in order to dead with crime they use a combination of all theories. Each theory came about with a break away from the previous, challenging its view on crime but today all three are used together to make an effective justice system. Criminology while it can define and aims to prevent crime but to create a crime free society is not something that is seen as possible by many people; this is because of the nature of people and that what they do does not always make sense and it is not something a theory can account for so there might not ever exist a truly crime free society.
