With the advent and development of internet technology, gender harassment on the internet has become one of the biggest issues facing the modern society. It is very common to hear or read news and reports relating to gender abuse on the internet. In most cases, women have been the victims of this issue making it difficult to fight for gender equality in the society. The attacks might take place in the social media, phones, emails, and computer devices among others. Gender abuse through the cyberspace is a criminal activity just like the physical harassment. As such, it is expected that those who are found guilty of committing the crime be penalized by the court of law. However, the modern society has complicated the issue through secondary victimization of the already hurt victims. The laws and criminal justice systems victimize the victims instead of helping them to get the justice they deserve. This paper seeks to discuss the issues of cyber gender harassment and the secondary victimization of the victims by the criminal justice systems of various lands.
The cases of gender harassment have increased in the recent past due to the development of various networking platforms in

In most cases, the attackers normally abuse the victims sexually. There have been cases of anonymous persons and groups calling or contacting the victims just to harass them for their amusement. It is important to note the fact that the attackers may also be women who attack other women for various reasons. Some internet hackers are also fond of getting into other people’s profiles and damaging the reputation or the profiles to humiliate the owners. Even though this paper focuses more on cyberspace harassment of women, it should be duly noted that even men have been victims of this type of abuse (Halder & Jaishankar,

The role of criminal justice professionals is to preserve and uphold the Constitution by enforcing laws, protecting citizen’s rights and promoting justice for all. Police officers in the field of duty must be able to discern situations to be able to act in the most appropriate manner as it relates to their job. In this case study, Officer Smith is threatened with being penalized for making a decision he thinks is good community policing, but his Lieutenant feels he violated protocol. Officer Smith responds to a domestic dispute between an intoxicated husband and wife. Normal procedure would be to arrest the husband and put him in jail until the decision is made whether or not to press charges. Instead, Officer Smith decides to intervene and asks the couple questions about if they love each other, and why they are physically assaulting each other. They respond they do love each other, but the alcohol makes them violent towards one another. Officer Smith then recommends counseling for the couple, as an alternative to putting the husband in jail. The couple agrees to

Unlike things happened in the past time, in a world where there is information overwhelmed, we are supposed to live in a more equal situation between men and women. However, in fact, gender inequity has just developed a new form to exist online. Women still continue to suffer from oppression towards themselves. It’s like the shadow of violence along the way with women. What is more, since the Internet shapes the world more united, it is not a case of a particular culture or society, but the whole world that we can see holding against women. One of the most common form is judging women’s bodies on social media through the comments of fling abuses or sarcastic remarks.
The criminal justice system is composed of three parts – Police, Courts and Corrections – and all three work together to protect an individual’s rights and the rights of society to live without fear of being a victim of crime. According to merriam-webster.com, crime is defined as “an act that is forbidden or omission of a duty that is commanded by public law and that makes the offender liable to punishment by that law.” When all the three parts work together, it makes the criminal justice system function like a well tuned machine.
The criminal justice system views any crime as a crime committed against the state and places much emphasis on retribution and paying back to the community, through time, fines or community work. Historically punishment has been a very public affair, which was once a key aspect of the punishment process, through the use of the stocks, dunking chair, pillory, and hangman’s noose, although in today’s society punishment has become a lot more private (Newburn, 2007). However it has been argued that although the debt against the state has been paid, the victim of the crime has been left with no legal input to seek adequate retribution from the offender, leaving the victim perhaps feeling unsatisfied with the criminal justice process.
There are many different aspects of criminal justice policy. One in particular is the different theories of crime and how they affect the criminal justice system. The Classical School of criminology is a theory about evolving from a capital punishment type of view to more humane ways of punishing people. Positivist criminology is maintaining the control of human behavior and criminal behavior. They did this through three different categories of Biological studies, which are five methodologies of crime that were mainly focused on biological theories, Psychological theories, which contains four separate theories, and the Sociological theories, which also includes four different methods of explaining why crime exists. The last theory is about Critical criminology. Their goal was to transform society in a way that would liberate and empower subordinate groups of individuals.
A major aspect of the liberal arts education is gaining knowledge from a variety of departments and experiences both in and out of the classroom. This semester I was given the opportunity to enroll in an Introduction to Criminal Justice course as the final part of my political science degree. While I have had the opportunity to take a criminal justice law course in the past, this is the first opportunity I have to take a class that explores and explains the justice system.
The World Wide Web and Internet are great places to study, work, or even play. But there is an ugly side of cyberspace. Cyberspace reflects the real world and some people tend to forget that. Cyberstalking and harassment are problems that a large number of people (especially women) are realizing. (Jenson, 1996, p.1)
A sense of anonymity online gives someone an excuse to commit sexual harassment, or be more aggressive towards others. Sexual Harassment involves an unwelcome sexual advance that can cause a person to not be able to work well in their work environment as well as be uncomfortable in a personal environment as well. Social media has a sort of anonymity, which doubles, as a sort of shield to people who harass other’s online, and the law can only do so much for the victim. Sexual harassment, not only in person, but online can have devastating emotional, mental and physical repercussions to the victim who is being sexually harassed. Taking away the power the offender has is one of the ways to give the victim their life back, as well as making it
The prominence of the internet shifted the paradigm of how people interact with one another. Internet was the catalyst for the expansion of worldwide affairs. For instance, communications has evolved from postal messages to efficient video calling. However, along with the positive of worldwide communications, it has also brought about a new subculture of bullying. Cyber bullying is a new age of terrorism that any individual can become a bully, especially online bullies. This type of bullying is extremely common with little to none regulation. A researcher had shown that cyber bully can be uncontrollable due to the low level of regulation. Cyber bullying consist of numerous negative effects that can harm an individual’s social, mental, and physical well being. In addition, the negative effects caused by the cyber bully may lead to depression, and ultimately death from suicide. Online bully is an ongoing social problem that aims to abuse online users in our society. Furthermore, Cyber bullying has been ingrained in our society and has withstood the test of time, it is detrimental in our society now taking on the form of cyber bullying.
Bullying in schools has always been a cause for concern, but technology seems to have taken it a notch higher. Cyber bullying is the new technology aided form of bullying, whose effects are as harsh, if not worse, than physical bullying. It is defined as the willful and repeated act to inflict harm on a person using computers, cell phones and any other electronic device (Hinduja and Patchin 6. This type of bullying is primarily carried out through social media sites, emails, text messages, instant messages and chat rooms. Cyber bullying can take on many forms such as repeated sending of nasty and insulting messages, demeaning gossip, exposing someone’s embarrassing secrets, exclusion, impersonating someone and using their identity to send damaging messages and stalking (Hinduja and Patchin 6-8). A review of cyberbullying statistics proves that cyberbullying is as real a problem in colleges as in middle and high schools and it should be given due attention.
Cyber bullying can get worst than bullying, It has more harmful effects. It can have long lasting impacts on one’s life. “Cyber bullying is different from bullying because people can use the disguise of anonymity to harass their victim” (Scully, etal). It can have life threatening impacts and it can be more dangerous than bullying in certain ways that in cyber bullying most of the times people do not know who is bullying or trying to hurt them, it can create more trouble because one does not know from where a bully is trying to blackmail or what they actually want? How dangerous they can be proved to their victim? Or what kinds of harm they can cause? “A traditional bully is often finished when a child reaches home but cyber attackers can follow their victim online, tormenting them 24/7 and in front of much larger crowd. This can cause children to feel there is no escape” (Saenz). Nowadays cel...
In Intro to Criminal Justice class, I had the opportunity to learn about the Criminal Justice System more thoroughly. I learned that there are three components that make up the Criminal Justice System such as the courts, law enforcement, and corrections. Each component has its own role in making sure the the Criminal Justice System is functioning properly. If one of these components are not efficient the Criminal Justice system will not be as strong as it could be.
