The Cress Theory of Color Confrontation Reaction Essay In the video named Cress Theory of Color Confrontation, the class is introduced to a professor named Dr. Frances Cress Welsing. She tells everyone during her presentation, that white supremacy exists and explains there are nine areas of people activity. There are areas that have white supremacy. But, some of those areas lack proof and evidence and they need to have it to back their claims. Those types of claims need have concrete evidence that white supremacy exists in this world, and Dr. Welsing has succeeded and failed to give it. The areas of people activity that have or lack evidence of racism are labor, law, and politics. One of the first areas of people of activity that lacks racism is labor. For example, white supremacy exists in the workplace because believe it or not there are some white managers who are racist towards black workers. The reason why the law does not lack racism or white supremacy is because of the fact that white police officers kill innocent black people. For example, a couple weeks ago a black man was killed by a white police officer in Tulsa because she thought he had a gun in his pocket. This tells the world that not all cops are good people; in fact, there are actually some bad police officers. Dr. Welsing mentions in her presentation, that the truth has been revealed about racism. We should never expect it to be revealed, when it comes to the justice system because the law is meant to be dominated by a racist person. People say racism does not exist; but, when white police officers start to kill innocent black men the racism grows. It shows how the world, is not a very safe place for us to live
E. D. Hirsch and Lisa Delpit are both theorist on teaching diverse students. Both of these theorist believe that when teaching diverse students, teachers need to see their students for who they are. Seeing your students for who they are, means you look past the color of your students’ skin and recognize their culture. According to Stubbs, when teachers look at their students equally, no matter the color of their skin, then the teacher is considered colorblind (2002). Being colorblind is not a great thing because we should not treat all of our students the same, since each student is different. It is important to see our students for who they are because our classes are unique. Instead, our classes represent a rainbow underclass. According to Li, the rainbow underclass is the representation of families who are culturally diverse and economically disadvantaged (2008). In order to meet these student’s needs, teachers need to think about the struggles that each student face.
The justice system is in place in America to protect its citizens, however in the case of blacks and some other minorities there are some practices that promote unfairness or wrongful doing towards these groups. Racial profiling is amongst these practices. In cases such as drug trafficking and other criminal acts, minorities have been picked out as the main culprits based off of skin color. In the article “Counterpoint: The Case Against Profiling” it recognizes racial profiling as a problem in America and states, “[In order to maintain national security] law-enforcement officers have detained members of minority groups in vehicles more than whites”…. “these officers assume that minorities commit more drug offenses, which is not the case” (Fauchon). In relationship to law enforcement there has also been many cases of police brutality leaving young blacks brutally injured, and even dead in recent years, cases such as Michael Brown, Dontre Hamilton, Eric Garner, Tamir Rice, and Freddy Gray just to name a few. Many of these young men were unarmed, and the police involved had no good justification for such excess force. They were seen as threats primarily because of their skin color. Even though slavery was abolished Jim Crow laws were made illegal years ago, racism is still not gone, and this is Bonilla-Silva’s central argument in his book, “Racism Without Racists.” While racist practices are not as overt nowadays, the covert, institutionalized ways of today’s new racism are just as discriminatory, he argues. One particular sentence that stood out that sums up the first part of his argument is “that the main problem nowadays is not the folks with hoods, but the folks dressed in suits.” Because of this switch to a more covert way of discriminating against people of color, white Americans have become color-blind to racism. In turn, the country is now home to “racism without racists,” which is the second part of the author’s argument. Because racism has become so internalized in our institutions, it can sometimes be hard to recognize, or at least admit to, the discrimination that is so prevalent in the U.S. Because whites either don’t recognize or admit to this racism, they claim that they don’t see color, and that any inequalities that are at play are due to the minorities not working hard enough in our meritocracy.

Upon reading “How it feels to be colored” it is apparent that Hurston was fearless, optimistic and bold from her apparent attitude towards life. She says that she is not tragically colored, nor weep at the world for she is focused on sharpening her oyster knife ( Reading this, her proud and charismatic personality shines through as she boldly views the world differently from those that see color or race as opposed to who they are. In a contemporary sense, however, racism is the claim that racism does not exist. The new ideal of colorblindness serves to promote niceness politics. The refusal to acknowledge the pervasiveness of racism is the new racism. Society promotes the use of politically correct terms and the idea of equality when the mentality of racism is far from extinct. The act of even recognizing race, of recognizing the mental associations with race, is in fact racism. This state of neutrality is a luxury only the privileged can access. This impartiality is the exertion of power by the racially privileged and is increasingly destructive towards the ‘other’.
Even after slavery was abolished as an act of the end of racism and a dominant race, the criminal justice system has been involved in many cases in which racism has been evident. Rosa Parks, as a vivid example, could not help but make public the abuse of authority she felt when denigrated on the bus destined to Cleveland. She was asked by the bus driver to stand up and give up her seat to the white passengers that were standing. However, she refused to give it up and she was arrested. Parks was intentionally disobeying the Alabama Law that required her to forfeit her spot to a white person. This law in and of itself is racist and exemplifies the inequality permeated in the criminal justice
Every generation faces new challenges and new problems to which we have progressed, conquered or simply just swept right under the rug. In today’s world we are increasingly facing numerous social problems, such as income disparity, unemployment, political instability amongst many others, but racism seems to have resurfaced in these past years. Although, the United States has come a long way in the issue of racism, it has never completely conquered it. Incidents such the shooting at Ferguson Missouri has raised an upheaval of protesters against the Country’s system that claims equal treatment and equal opportunity for all, regardless of race or gender. Such a simple but revealing quote captures the essence of a new form of racism that has evolved in America. Appalling cases of overt racism still manifest themselves, but the racism of today has become considerably more subtle than in the past. This subtlety is likely the cause of America’s disillusioned attitude towards racism. As Martin Luther King, Jr. once said, “The absence of brutality and unregenerate evil is not the presence of justice.” Many have falsely assumed that with the eradication of explicit segregation laws, the problems of race and more importantly racism had been solved. The racism of today might not be as embedded within the law, but the racism of today quietly, yet undeniably, benefits and privileges certain groups over others. I would challenge society to reconsider its definition of racism, and use that new understanding to help make for a better tomorrow. The first step is for society to concede that America has produced a systemized hierarchy, one that has become known as white privilege.
