“Music is the key,” says Morrissey, who at this point of his life was attending a school with an abusive education system. He says this when he watches his teacher and fellow classmates finally smile while a song was being played. Furthermore, music is the key that can unlock the feelings we keep private. Three inspiring songs to come across are: Creep by Radiohead, Voices Carry by ‘Til Tuesday, and Dog Days Are Over by Florence + the Machine. Many people have experienced the feelings presented in each song: feeling like and outcast, wanting to be heard, and realizing that life moves forward.
Creep is an inspiring song that gives people something to relate to in tough times. “But I’m a creep. I’m a weirdo. What the hell am I doing here? I don’t belong here” (Radiohead, 1992) is the chorus of this simple song. “I don’t belong here,” is a simply put statement, but

something so relatable that it leaves an impact. “I don’t care if it hurts. I want to have control. I want a perfect body. I want a perfect soul. I want you to notice when I’m not around” (Radiohead, 1992) is the most detailed part of the song. People work painstakingly to be something they are not and try just as intensly to leave a shadow somewhere. Perfection is something to strive for, however it is something impossible to be. Yet, humans still look at other humans as if they are perfect and become envious. Listening to the song, the lyrics are familiar from personal thoughts, however, it is simple to see the crazy amount of pressure people put on themselves. There is always a need to have something to relate to, and this song is a support, saying the words most cannot say. Voices Carry makes the point that every individual deserves to have their voices heard. “I try so hard not to get upset because I know all the trouble I’ll get. He tells me tears are something to hide and something to fear, and I try so hard to keep it inside so no one can hear” (Mann, 1985) are the most visual lyrics and not the only relatable lyrics in the song. Out of fear, people shut out personal thoughts to the world to avoid trouble they did not deserve. “He wants me, but only part of the time. He wants me, if he can keep me in line. Hush hush, keep it down now, voices carry” (Mann, 1985) are definitely the hardest hitting lyrics in the song and basically summarizes the entire song itself. The music video depicts the story of the song and in the end, Aimee Mann is sitting in the opera with the man who feels embarrassed by her and finally stands up and reveals who she really is. She sings her song and her voice carries through the crowd, where she is finally heard. Many people want to be heard, and the song and music video can inspire people to take action with their words. Dog Days Are Over is a reminder that to keep on living, we cannot carry our past with us, and we must move on in order to live in the present.
“Leave all your love and your longing behind, you can’t carry it with you if you want to survive. The dog days are over, the dog days are done. Can you hear the horses, ‘cause here they come” (Welch, 2008) are the lyrics in the chorus. In a way, it is like Florence Welch is talking about life like a war, and basically saying that the war of the past is over and now it’s time to move on to the next. “Happiness hit her, like a bullet in the back. Struck from a great height, by someone who should’ve known better than that” (Welch) are the lyrics that pick up the song. Soon, the fight is not over because there will always be a person who will shoot bullets, but it is what people do in the aftermath that matters. “Happiness hit her,” and this person “should’ve known better,” than to stop her from that. There are many points in life where it is time to move on, being that it is “just life,” and this song truly embraces moving forward until the wars we witness are
over. Creep by Radiohead, Voices Carry by ‘Til Tuesday, and Dog Days Are Over by Florence + the Machine are three inspiring and relatable songs. With “Creep,” any person has felt like an outcast at one point or another and the song gives a sense of understanding. “Voices Carry” lets people know that they are not the only ones who want to be heard and their voices will eventually carry if they let them. “Dog Days Are Over” is the song that holds together every emotion felt in each part of the life we live and says the war called life will never be over, but it is how we move forward from each fight that matters. As people, there is a need to have something to lean on and to lift our spirits when we can’t lift them ourselves and these three songs give support and the power to fly, when they are needed.
The fact that once time is gone, it’s gone for good. There is no making up for lost time, and you cannot change what you didn’t do. Enjoy life while you can because there is no making up for it when you are no longer busy. It’s easy to hear and listen to advice, but it is much more difficult to follow through with advice in the moment. The song uses the imagery of a man’s life passing by and how it has influences his son’s
This song reminisces about the loss of Private Rodger Young and reminds soldiers to push forward through the loss. Since death was something typically seen on the battle field Losser took this sad moment and turned it in to a rally together moment to get the job done. Loesser reflects the idea that America is tired of the war and are ready to keep progressing in life. While this song may not have been the most popular of the time period, Life magazine at the time felt like it was vital to print the music in the worlds for all to
Music is regarded as a method of passing a message. Though some songs do not intend to do that, the message in them is still perceived. The song, “Get up, ...
The song I’ve chosen for this assignment is Old Friends by the band Pinegrove. This is a charming alt-rock song about remembering old connections, and holding on to the new ones. In the song singer Evan Stephens Hall realizes he doesn’t make enough time for the people he really cares about when a friend of his passes away. Although I may not be able to relate to the song completely, I can definitely relate to the overall message the band is trying to get across, specifically in a few lines. “I kept saying I wanted to see you/ Saying, ‘What’s wrong with that?’
This song talks a lot about the baggage of the past that people hold onto instead of letting it go. All that baggage is only going to end up hurting you more and more instead of helping you in any way possible. An example is the opening
For many of us, one of the most accurate and effective ways to express the feelings that really matter to us is through music. We don’t only grow to attached to songs that are catchy, but also those with lyrics that we can relate to. It is not uncommon to feel like sometimes, artists can convey the way we feel better than we could ourselves. The storybook-like lines you read at the start of this page are a collection of lyrics
It is true that music has a compact link to our emotions. Music assists people to overcome the bad situations in their life, just like it did for Sonny, the barmaid, or some other people in the Harlem. Music has a tremendous effect on people’s minds because it makes them feel relaxed and comfortable, especially with the soft classical music. It helps distressed people stay smooth and peaceful. In fact, music is a remarkable way to ease stress.
Many music artists choose to express themselves through songs for issues such as domestic violence and similar problems. ‘Family Portrait’ written by Pink and ‘Misery’ written by Maroon 5 are both songs that successfully reflect the issues of domestic violence throughout the pieces. ‘Family Portrait’ is a song written by pink in 2001 about a broken family and a little girl’s emotional plead for her mother and father to not leave each other. In line 4, the lyrics reflect the violence in the little girl’s house. As the song continues, in lines 9, 10, 11 and 12, it has become so deeply influenced by her mother and father. In lines 22, 23 and 24, the lyrics reflect the little girl’s attempts to escape the violence. The little girl repeats herself of the phrase “it ain’t easy growin’ up in World War III to symbolise the chaos in her house. ‘Family Portrait’ is an excellent representation of a household manifested with domestic violence. ‘Misery’ is a song written by Maroon 5 in 2010 is a more recent song about domestic violence. This song displays the themes of remorse and regret from the male role which is evident through the entire song. In lines 3 through 11, the lyrics metaphorically represent the emotional cuts that are left by one another. Later through lines 25 to 29, the lyrics talk about regret and giving up. The lyrics “so let me be” are mentioned twice to show remorse for the father’s past. These
Music reveals emotions through rhythm and lyrics that conveys different meanings all according to perspective. They are used to express sorrow, happiness, sadness, and every other emotion. Music is a universal form of communication that unites us all and gives us a mutual foundation. Through the brilliance of music one acquires hope, prosperity, but most importantly the potency to make you feel better about life.
Studies have demonstrated that certain sorts of rock music can heighten feelings. This means youth and adolescents who are inclined to negative, fierce, or depressive contemplations are more prone to have these sentiments (and follow up on them). By the same accord, youngsters who are characteristically content and happy are more averse to have the negative verses in specific tunes influence them in any capacity. To them, it’s simply entertainment (Kwan,
Throughout my life, music has always been a major influence. It has the power to change my mood when I'm feeling down, but the thing I find most intriguing about music is that it doesn't always end up improving your mood: like all forms of art, it imitates life, which is not always portrayed in a positive light. The musicians that I admire most have the versatility to induce several different emotional responses in the same piece. This quality is present in most of the wide variety of music I listen to, from Russian composer Dmiti Shostakovich, to Chicago jazz band Tortoise, to California pop/rock sextet Mr. Bungle.
Right when my teacher told me about this assignment, I knew exactly what my lyric/poem was going to be about. The song “Fight Song” by Rachel Platten was introduced to me not to long ago. My friend Kalli Kaney actually showed me this song. There are so many parts in the song that I love so much but the one that sticks out to me is “And I don’t really care if no one else believes, ‘Cause I still got a lot of fight left in me”. What I believe the writer is trying to tell people with these lyrics is that even though a disaster hits you, or someone doesn’t believe in you, you still can move forward. You still can prove them wrong and tell them that you do it and that you will. Everyone has crisis in their lives because if you don’t, you aren’t
I have been told that music is an escape from everyday pains and suffering: it’s an outlet for extra pent up emotion. People tend to feel strong connections with musicians because they sing and perform the very thing that sums up their innermost feelings. For me, music was exactly that, and so much more. In a previous paper, I wrote about my last day living in Appleton, Wisconsin. This story picks up just a few days prior to that day, in a little recording studio in the heart of downtown Appleton.
Music, a form of art, made up of unique and special sounds containing elements of pitch and rhythm can powerfully soothe one’s soul. Firstly, there are different types of music, and each has its own features. These sounds and features are what I admire in music because to me it creates a new form of communication to one’s consciousness. It stimulates our mind and gives it a sense of harmony and peace through the hardships that life poses for us. As a kid, I would always listen to music from any genre, deciding which genre would complement me the most as I grew older. In middle school, I remember going on the computer and finding a website/program where I could make my own beats. From that day on, I spent countless of hours each day making sure the tune sounded proper and pleasurable for my ears. At first, it wasn’t good, but eventua...
He strives for this feeling of liberation while remaining self-aware that life is composed of both good and bad moments in which you must learn to embrace both. Through my own personal experiences, I’ve been able to recognize this as well. We cannot control what happens to us, but we can learn to pace ourselves and take life day by day. I’m constantly reminding myself to not worry about the future and what it beholds yet rather learn to enjoy myself and live in the moment. One of the main reasons I connect with this song is because the chorus reflects on taking your time on the ‘’ride’’ that is your own life. I believe it’s important to not worry over something that hasn’t happened yet or may never happen. There’s no reason to rush our lives nor compare ourselves to others and how well they’re doing. I’ve learned it’s harmful to dwell on the future and forget to enjoy the moment. We should focus on ourselves and how you can achieve all you desire on your own
