The Brew I hated that party. I hated those drinks. I hated myself. I walked into the bustling party of my parent's house. It was filled with people I didn’t even know, but the familiar faces were only my parents and sister. They were in the kitchen was filled to the max with people. I trudged my way through the crowd when I got to my sister, she was elated to see me. I asked, “Why are there so many people at my birthday party?” “Mom and Dad invited everyone in the neighborhood,” She replied. My parents weren’t the social type so it was weird. I found my parents at the sink chatting. I walked up and asked, “Why did you invite so many people?” “We wanted everyone to know that you were turning 25.” Mom replied I understood
and walked away. I took a quick glance back and found my Dad pointing to the utility room. I opened the heavy metal door to find a bottle of whiskey and a note on it. It reads “ I saved this for a while so I thought it would be a little birthday present”. It didn’t have a name on the note, but I knew it was from my father. I decided to take a swig it was smooth. I walked out the door and gave my dad a quick thumbs up, he nodded. I placed the bottle down where I found it and went into the hallway. Everything was the way I remembered it being when I grew up in this house. As I stood in the hallway remembering the past, I went upstairs to my room to find a present that was more decorated, I was guessing it was from my mom or sister. It was a shared present from both of them. I opened to find an old computer I remember playing on a lot as a kid and a bottle of wine. My mom and sister have tried me to get into wine, but it wasn’t my favorite, but I drank some of it anyway. I went back downstairs to find my sister in the hallway holding two cups and smiling. I walked over to her and grabbed one, it was an alcoholic drink. “What is in this?” I asked “Something special.” She replied I decided to chug it (bad idea). After an hour later most of the people had left me and my sister was sitting on the couch drunk when she said. “Can you drive me home?” “Sure,” I replied We got up I grabbed my keys and went to the car. When we got in I started the engine and we were off. As we were on the freeway driving started to seem weird and hard to me. Five minutes later it got super hard to stay in the lane. Then all I hear is the crash of a car, then I wake up to find my sister with life leaving her body.
Katherine Brush utilizes diction and atmosphere to convey the mood’s shift throughout the story. Her choice of words and the aura they create demonstrate the transition from a seemingly jovial occasion, to a tense and uncomfortable reaction. “The Birthday Party” takes a seemingly normal couple and uncovers the troubles that lay just beneath the surface.
In her short story, "The Birthday Party", Katharine Brush depicts the cruelty that many people in this world so curtly reveal. Through her use of imagery, diction, and point of view she is able to send this message across to her audience.
“The Birthday Party”, a short story by Katharine Brush, illustrates a drastic turn of events as what seems to be a joyous event, results in a complete disaster in which the author applies imagery, irony, and diction.
He throws extravagant parties in his beautiful mansion, yet he still feels so alone and sad even in the midst of the thousands of people attending his party. He threw parties to drown out his sadness and to ignore the silence filling his heart and his mind. It never lasted long, for when the party was over all of those negative feelings were still
Most of us can easily picture a typical child's party, loud and hyper boys running about, noise and fun and screaming kids and chaos, but this party seems to be viewed differently by the mother. It is a more serious and quiet event. She sees the boys as "short men" gathering in the living room, not as children having fun. The children seems subdued to us, with "hands in pockets". It is almost as if they are waiting, as the readers are, for something of imp...
The first half of my book “The Cellar” written by Natasha Preston, was so good that I could not put the book down. The girl, at that point, had no memories which include her name and anything before she woke up on a dirty, bloody cabin floor. She looked down at her throbbing hand and found that two of her fingernails were missing.

The Creature That Opened My Eyes Sympathy, anger, hate, and empathy, these are just a few of the emotions that came over me while getting to know and trying to understand the creature created by victor frankenstein in Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. For the first time I became completely enthralled in a novel and learned to appreciate literature not only for the great stories they tell but also for the affect it could have on someones life as cliché as that might sound, if that weren’t enough it also gave me a greater appreciation and understanding of the idiom “never judge a book by its cover.” As a pimply faced, insecure, loner, and at most times self absorbed sophomore in high school I was never one to put anytime or focus when it came time
A thick plume of black smoke and ash hung in the air in a heavy haze, almost completely obscuring the lurid red glow of the waning sun. Below, a cloud of grey plaster dust twisted and writhed amid the sea of debris as intermittent eddies of wind gusted by.
It was 9:00 on a dark and dreary night in October when Mindy and Mandy crept slowly up the stairs to check on their little brother Max. Mandy was very upset over the fact of having to check on her little brother when she wanted to sleep. However, Mindy wanted to make sure he was asleep, and she dragged Mandy along for company.
Early June sun shining bright. I set off into town. Driving down the road, mind drifting. I know this roads every twist and turn, when CRUNCH. I step outside to assess the damage. To my despair I find a tree has viciously mutilated the right side of my Volkswagen Jetta. I drive home knowing the rage of my parents will be inevitable. After countless hours of lecturing they calm down and reach the conclusion that I must get a job.
There was not really much of a choice. To live or to die. Mr Murderer was staring at me, waiting for me to accept his offer. What is he, a pimp?

Usually people came here if they were in a mood for a long drive, but Carol was going for Julia’s party. Carol had refused to come at first but Julia wouldn’t accept any excuses from anyone since it was her last birthday in Australia. She was moving to London forever and wanted this to be her best birthday bash ever. Carol had tried to explain her reasons. Her house was really far after all and she didn’t want to drive at night but Julia’s reason was more justified.
“Ugghhh!” Tamiya says as she realizes her birthday was days away and she had nothing planned. “My birthday is always over the top, I have to do it big this year for my 18th birthday,” she said to herself. Last year Tamiya had the hottest birthday party, at the best venue, in LA and this year she wanted it to be even better than that. However, since then her father had lost his job and her mother was working overtime to make ends meet. Tamiya had been working as a tutor and saving her money but it wasn’t enough for what Tamiya had planned. One day as she was walking home from school she saw a beautiful water fountain. “I should throw a penny in and try my luck,” she said to herself. “I want to have the best 18th birthday and have everything
