Creative Writing: Meagan-Baked Brownies

Last year, Meagan and Kris started their very own book club. They got the idea from Meagan's mom. Once a month, Meagan's mom had met with her friends to talk about a book they all had read. Sometimes people would even bring snacks. Everyone took turns picking the book they would read.

When Meagan told her best friend, Kris, that they should start their own Book Club, Kris wasn't sure.

"Don't we read enough books in school?" Kris asked.

"Sure, but in school we don't get to pick the books," Meagan said.

Eventually Kris agreed and they chose the second Tuesday of every month to meet. Meagan invited the twins that lived next door, Gaby and Izzie. Kris invited her cousin, Eleanor. Meagan picked the first book they would read, Because of Winn-Dixie by Kate DiCamillo. …show more content…

She also had her mom help her go online to find some questions that would help them talk about the book. When everyone arrived, they sat in a circle on the floor. Meagan started the meeting by reading a short summary of the book's plot. Then she asked the first question.

"Opal's father is initially reluctant to let Opal keep Winn-Dixie. What are his objections? Why does he change his mind?" she asked the group.

No one answered.

"What do you think, Kris?" Meagan prodded.

"I, um, I think maybe I'll get a brownie," Kris said and jumped up from the circle.

"Kris!" Meagan shouted after her.

"I don't think she actually read the book," Eleanor whispered from her seat across the way.

Meagan went to talk to Kris in the kitchen. Eventually Kris admitted that Eleanor was right, she hadn't read the book. She'd started it, but when she realized she was only on page 14 with a day to go until the meeting, she'd given up. Meagan was disappointed, but she forgave her friend.
