I survey the scene as I wait for the others to arrive. The police were right, there isn’t any evidence of a break-in. The only real sign of anything amiss is the bloodstain on the cream carpet, the splatter on the walls. Stepping lightly, I move to the walls to study the photographs. Immediately, I notice something that forces a gasp past my lips. Shit. The purr of the Impala roars outside the lavish house, and I appear at the front door to head them off. I wave, and hurry up the walk. All three of them get out of the car, even with my dissenting gestures. “Guys, I’m sorry, we can’t work this case,” I blurt. We continue to update each other on the little bits of trivia we’ve missed since the last time we saw each other until we get in the car. I don’t bring her obvious exhaustion up, and I can see that she’s grateful. The conversation stays trivial for a while When we’ve entered the gated community they live in, I decide it’s time to break into it. Slowly, of course. “How exactly is your brother doing?” I ask gently. He smile fades and her hands grip the wheel tighter. Her soul flares black as she stops the car in the driveway. The fear. “He’s doing well in his classes up in Fresno, which is normal. He hasn’t been doing much of what he’s supposed to do, for the business, which is unfortunate. It would be nice if he could find better ways to spend his time, but there’s not much we can do about that.” She sighs and leads the way into the house. “Oh?” I try to sound casual. “I smell intrigue. What’s going on, and is it going to affect his mood terribly?” “If you can find a way to make him do anything other than this stupid quest for self-destruction, I will pay you for it,” she says, hanging up her bag.
