In the article Create a Safe Space in the Online Classroom, Pam Van Londen stresses the importance of practicing proper communication skills and creating a safe space online. Van Londen states “when you communicate online, you cannot provide eye contact and body language to help explain yourself, so your message may be misunderstood” (Van Londen 2017). Misunderstandings can waste time and affect people negatively. It is crucial to support others’ opinions and feelings in order to maintain civility and the integrity of the online safe space. problem for many teens and adults. In the article Understanding Cyberbullying in College, Claire Hall breaks down the facts about Cyberbullying and how Cyberbullying can be stopped. Cyberbullying is defined as “‘willful and repeated harm inflicted through the use of computers, cell phones and other electronic devices’” (Hall, 2017). It is reported that 70% of people between 13 and 22 have experienced Cyberbullying first hand. LGBT youth, however, are three times more likely to be Cyberbullied because of their sexual orientation. If Cyberbullying occurs, it is imperative to keep the evidence, to not respond, and to, most importantly, report the person’s actions to the school or to the authorities. The topic of Cyberbullying has created a controversial debate regarding the extent Free Speech among Americans. The article Online Harassment 2017, written by Maeve Duggan, expounds on this debate. A survey was conducted and found 45% of Americans sided with Free Speech, while 53% said Free Speech does not protect against online harassment or Cyberbullying.
Due to the fact many people use the internet and phones to talk or text, the percentage of face-to-face conversations are decreasing. A decrease in conversations can lead to lack of experience, which in turn leads to more awkward and poor communication. The ability to talk to others in reality is vital, for many important conversations are held face-to-face, like job interviews. If a certain person spends most conversations online, it will lead to poor communication skills in reality when it is necessary.

Why do schools NOT notify the police when a violent disturbance occurs? One would assume that when there is an assault or threat upon a student, the police would be the first people to be notified. When there is violence, or threats of violence against students in an academic setting, information about the threats and the troublesome student should be shared with the police. But Universities usually do not provide this information to the police. Lynn Daggett, a Professor at the Gonzaga University School of Law, states, “Schools struggle with whether, when, and how to involve police, both when students appear to present a threat to others, as in high profile cases, and also when the school suspects a student of criminal behavior” (Daggett). Although police are available and willing to be involved in school disturbances, schools do not involve the police more often than they should and cannot or will not give certain records about their students to the police.

School for students should be a safe place to learn, grow, and develop into impeccable human beings. Bullying has been a major problem for years. As times have changed, and technology has taken over. Bullying has become harsher, and dangerous. Students have more ways to when it comes to bullying, with endless options. Cyberbullying in Michigan has become more of an issue over the years, leading to serious crime offenses. Since technology isn’t going anywhere, this offense will only advance. After careful review of Lamphere School District policy’s, student handbooks and Michigan state laws and policies have a great affect with the First Amendment on cyberbullying.
In her article “How the Internet Has Changed Bullying”, Maria Konnikova explained how bullying has reached technology, and in the workplaces of many adults. The Internet has made it harder to escape from bullying, and easier for bullies to escape from confronting their victims. Furthermore, the author stresses that cyberbullying not only targets high schoolers, but it’s affecting the lives of college students as well (Konnikova 1). Cyberbullying takes place in the Internet world where is easier for a bully to gossip and humiliate multiple of victims in a faster pace. The studies have shown that cyberbullying is making a greater impact in the victims’ and the bullies’ lives more than the traditional bullying and many people are not aware of it; therefore the schools, witnesses, and employers should work together to fight against cyberbullying and provide help to the victims and bullies.

Online classrooms are no different from these online jungles, where words can be easily misconstrued in the low-context environment of computer-mediated-communication (CMC). Conflicting values are imminent in diverse group settings, but online-only, low context communication leads to increased conflict. The first line of defense for managing conflict is the use of online mediation. A secondary line of defense for resolving conflict and preventing future conflict is to change the textual communication to face-to-face communication using video conferencing technology, in addition to building awareness around conflict management styles. Several strategies can be used to reduce and end conflict. In discussing potential conflict between students in a community college online class, I will examine value conflict between five women from diverse backgrounds who have had none to little contact with each other independent of the online environment.
As I looked over the items I had written down on my list, it was hard to find a common theme. I had wrote down things that seemed very important such as be inspiring or be professional, but then I had other points that seemed silly, such as have pajama Friday’s with my students. There is no doubt that technology has changed our society. Now things are faster, easier, and more efficient than ever before. With all these changes, bullying has been impacted in a positive and negative way. Although technology has given victims of bullying an outlet to complete education without going to school, technology has made it easier for bullying to happen on anonymous apps and social media sites.
A study done by Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD) in January 2015 shows that there are some benefits of online learning with the help of social media such as time saving, high flexibility, cheaper in cost, and so on. Again, in reality, there are more unwanted consequences in practicing online learning than the positive achievements. Although it is hard to argue that online learning does serve its function as a fast and cheaper communication very well, the quality of human interaction does not seem to agree in the same way. Encouraging students who are usually still young to rely too much on social media has the potential to make them less social and in this case, social media acts as a new set of communication barrier (Tardanico, 2012). Depending too much on online notes, YouTube online video, and video chatting as a mean to study will extinguish the need to interact face to face, doing hands on exercises in class, and also eliminates the fun of feeling the atmosphere of being in class with friends, which actually refer to the real communication. Without real communication, students would not be able to strengthen their interpersonal skills and this will surely leads to poor quality of human interactions. Society is feeling the impact of the shift in educational options. However, while there are more opportunities for students, there is another door opened for inequality to take place. As technology advances, a social phenomenon is beginning to change the way that Americans are obtaining college degrees. Approximately 3.2 million students were enrolled in at least one completely online class in the fall semester of 2005 (Clark-Ibanez & Scott, 2008). The effects of technological advances within the educational setting are having an impact on the way in which students are learning, leaving some students with limited options.
