The director of the film Crash was trying to convey a message to his audience about race and how prejudice can blind a person which keeps them from truly connecting with those that surround them. He does this by making the plot of his movie center around several characters with different backgrounds, occupations, and ethnicities. The film follows the events of the character’s lives over a period of two days and it shows how their stories are all connected. The cinematography that is used throughout also works to convey the director’s message. For example, the movie opens with a voice over by Detective Waters where he is talking about people missing touch in LA because no one touches each other. Another moment that illustrates the message of the movie is the scene in which Officer Ryan has to rescue Christine from her overturned car. The close up shots, angles, and even music used in that scene serve to convey a sense of urgency. There is a close-up of Christine’s face that captures her recognition and fear when she sees that the officer who had previously harassed her is the one trying to rescue her. Once they’re both out of the car and the paramedics take Christine, the scene ends with a long shot of Officer Ryan wearing a solemn expression on his face as he is standing in the middle of the road with the firetruck in the background, smoke in the air, and the sunlight shining on him. It’s as if he’s reflecting on how this experience made him realize Christine is a person, just like him, who he treated unfairly. While there have been movies made before this one such as Remember the Titans, and ones made afterwards, such as 12 Years A Slave that talk about race, this film is unique in the way it approaches the topic. The focus is not on one specific race being discriminated, it talks about many races and it shows that even minorities can be prejudiced towards each other. This is significant considering that back when the movie was released it was mostly rude and sociably unacceptable for people to say racist things to people’s faces. Racism still existed but it wasn’t supposed to be advertised. In today 's time with all the events that have happened in these past years like police brutality, the influx of immigrants from Latin countries, and terrorist groups such as ISIS, race is a subject that is being brought up more and more in everyday life.
