Over the course of this semester I have learned a lot about myself, such as what I am good at, what I am bad at, what I can improve on, and what needs no attention at all. I have learned how to write a cover letter, and resume, which is essential to finding a job anywhere. Thanks to this call I understand how much time and effort has to be put into finding a career, and not just a job. If I want to go nowhere in life I should throw a resume together with no important information, and treat it like fishing bait, I may catch something big, or get nothing at all. However, if I want a career I will need to research the company, connect with the correct internal people and get my resume in the right hands.
In order to advance my career, I will
need to start networking with possible employers. And I will need to find out about different position available. My mother once told me it’s not what you know, but who you know. However, until this class I never believed it, as I though hard work would always pay off. This class has told me otherwise. Yes, hard work is essential to a great career, but it also includes having a large network of people that know I work that hard. Without it, all the hard work and dedication could essentially be blind to the eyes. Once good positive network has been started it will get easier to communicate and improve not only myself, but important aspects of my life.
In unit seven we learned a lot about the job process. I actually learned a lot of things that I didn’t know before. For instance, I learned that companies offering jobs don’t necessarily have to take any applicants, and that they actually go through contacts to find a suitable person not as much as resumes. This really surprised me, whenever I think of the job market I think of applying for a job, handing out a resume, and interviewing. I never once thought that the companies and businesses offering jobs may look to social media and contacts instead. It truly changed my idea about what I would do to find a job after college. I would of course still apply and polish up my resume, but I would also turn to social media a lot more. It also made me think a bit more about how I present myself on social media, since many companies and businesses are turning to social media this means that I would have to make sure that all my social media posts are posted with a great deal of care, and kindness.
Composition 1 taught me crucial writing skills and helped me grow as a writer. At the beginning of the semester, my papers utilized a considerable amount of passive voice, lacked transitional phrases, and the context was not always fully developed. But throughout the class, my writing became more clear, organized, and comprehensive. Passive voice allows the object of an action to be the subject of a sentence. In my first paper, the formal summary essay, I wrote, “The term describes situations, dating back to the 1980s, when excessive numbers of blacks were found to have been exposed to highly polluted areas.” The use of “were found” and “been exposed” distort the meaning of the sentence. Passive voice confuses the reader and makes comprehension
Time sure does fly; in the blink of an eye, yet another 7.5-week class has come and gone. Just like life, it is scary to think that in just a few short years I will be graduating college and be in search of a future career. The magnitudes of readings, assignments, PowerPoint lectures, and videos have all contributed to the valuable knowledge I have gained since taking this course. Nothing that was presented or required was seen as invaluable towards my progression of career development. This career development course has allowed me to do some self-exploration, career research, and help me understand what influencing factors were related to the job market. Ultimately, this class helped me gauge and find a suitable career path, which will forever shape my future.
In conclusion, I realized that my future depended on what I was willing and able, to make of it. I had to make the decision to put my fears behind me and move forward with the opportunities that would be available to me after I earned a college degree. I want to work in a career field that I went to school for and earned a degree for, not to just work at an everyday job, being overworked, under paid and unappreciated. I look forward to the day of graduation when I can be an encouragement to others experiencing these same issues and an inspiration to my children.
Over the course of the semester, I have learned a lot regarding the process of writing. When comparing my open letter to my DSP, it is very clear how much this process has progressed for me. When writing my DSP, I wrote the initial draft and then edited for grammar, but not really content. When writing my open letter I made quite a few changes to content and had more rounds of revision. My process was as follows: I wrote a brief outline, then I wrote the first draft, then considering the comments that I usually make on my peers’ essays I made structural and content changes, then I sent my essay to my peers for feedback, then I made even more content changes, then I received instructor feedback, then I made even more content changes, and finally I made the final grammatical changes. My portfolio will demonstrate the skills and writing techniques I have developed and honed while taking the course English 1010 at the University of Memphis. Some of the techniques and skills I have learned include how to write with different persuasive strategies on the audience and how to incorporate critical thinking into my work. As well as these skills I have learned how to apply an effective composing process to my writing and have fine tuned my writing abilities. Writing with different styles on different topics has improved the way I approach writing papers. These styles helped me learn quickly, therefore making me a better writer and student at the same time.

Imagine it's graduation night, your final days of high school, and you are prepared for your one-year vacation off of school. A year passes and you are preparing for your extended education, little did you know you have stopped the velocity of your learning that you once had, all ruined by a year break. In the articles “Employment or Education”, “Choosing the Advantage”, and “Today’s College Student” give great examples of why students who are planning on going to college after high school should go straight into college and concern about their career after college.
I have found that the variety of experiences that I have gained have helped me to become confident, self-motivated and an enthusiastic individual who is not only result driven but also aware of the need to adopt a holistic approach towards all situations. I feel I have a wide breadth of skills which will stand me in good stead throughout my university experience and I am looking forward to commencing the next stage in my academic life. I’m a student at Tompkins Cortland Community College this is my first semester as a college student. I plan to go to college for four years and only be at TC3 for this one semester, then transfer to a four year school. College has grown around the world more than ever and more people are attending college more than ever. I have chosen to go to college because of the rewards after graduation. Yes it is another four years of school but by getting more education and an extended degree gives me more opportunities for better jobs and more money. The career I have chosen to study is business administration. I am hoping that it takes me to a great job managing a company or possibly being an accountant.
Which means that I might have to move to California, New York, or Georgia to get an internship or go to grad school that focus on Production and cultural studies. As a new student at UNCW, my overall experience and my ultimate personal and professional goals are entirely dependent on my actions and what I participate in during my four years at this institution. I must apply my past values, experiences, and influences during my time here to be the most well-rounded student I can be. Although the past is a crucial component of my identity and where I am headed, it is equally important to create new experiences that build upon existing foundations from earlier in life. I have learned that I am not the amazing communicator I once thought I was. I have many skills to practice and develop to become an effective communicator. So throughout this semester I have learned more than I thought about myself. I have learned about my skills, values, strengths, weaknesses and goals for the future. I have learned about what motivates me to be in college and what keeps me here now that I am here. We would often move from relatives ' houses since my parents couldn’t afford renting an apartment themselves.
