Courage is what motivates us to do something that frightens us. It is crucial to have if you want to experience a well-lived life in which you can have a job, friends, experience, etc. Without it, your life would be a horror. You wouldn't go out, watch eerie movies, and you would never be ecstatic and feel insecure all of the time. This topic unquestionably relates to the novel The Outsiders because in a way, all characters showed signs of courage, even if it was barely noticeable. Even Johnny, who was a coward, was courageous in some ways. An example would be when Johnny, Dally and Ponyboy went into the burning church to rescue the children and salvage whatever else they could. Another example would be when the Greasers fought the Socs in …show more content…
For example, Mulan was an average girl who was underestimated by men’s stereotypical thoughts. They thought she wasn’t exceptional for anything and thought of her as a wimp. To prove them inaccurate, she gathered enough courage to conclude to suddenly leave one day and fight the vicious Huns, or the group of people trying to control China. She was then considered a true warrior and a hero for showing courage. Furthermore, I found a second example which also shared the same theme. In the Ted Talks video, “How We Cut Youth Violence in Boston by 79 Percent” by Jeffrey Brown, Jeffrey talks about how there was teen violence everywhere he went when he was growing up. So, he came up with a plan that would help reduce at least 70% of Boston’s child violence rate. He was too unprepared to do it, but after a bit, he showed signs of courage and even teamed up with the teens to help diminish the violence. Using the example from The Outsiders, you can make connections to the theme and to the third party examples. Johnny was a lot like Mulan; he was underestimated by the Socs and was thought to be very useless and a coward. But, in the end, he managed to fight to save Ponyboy’s life when being attacked by Bob. You can also tell how Darry was a lot like Jeffrey Brown from the “Ted Talks” video. They were both asking themselves, “Why
Mark Twain best described courage when he said that, “Courage is resistance to fear, mastery of fear - not absence of fear” (Twain). Both in The One Who Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest by Ken Kesey and Watership Down by Richard Adams, the authors deal with the topic of courage and each share a similar view on it as this quote. Indeed, both authors suggest that courage is not accumulated simply by acts of heroism, but rather by overcoming fears and speaking one’s mind as well. These books are very similar in the way that bravery is displayed through the characters in an uncommon way. Firstly, an example of bravery
An example of courage, as the judgment that something else is more important than fear, is through the character of Kak in B for Buster by Iain Lawrence. In this novel, Kak is characterized as a young, determined boy, desiring to turn himself from a comic book reading boy into a World War II hero. Planning to escape his drunken, abusive father, Kak enlists himself in the Canadian Air Force although he is underage and only sixteen years old. During his first mission, he is becomes frightened of the risk of not coming home alive, but doesn?t show his emotions because of his austere, intrepid crewmen. During this mission, Kak did not have an absence of fear, but he felt that becoming a hero like the ones in his comic book, and accomplishing his dream of fly, was more important than his fear of dying.
Many heroes appear in the book The Outsiders. The characters that I think are heroes are Ponyboy, Johnny, and Dally. The definition of a hero for me is a person who is brave enough to do things to help someone even if it is a dangerous thing to do.A hero also cares for others and people can rely on them. Ponyboy was a hero because he saved peoples’ lives. Johnny died as a hero because he also saved the kids from the burning church and he was also relied on by his gang members. Dally was hero mainly because he cared for his gang and people relied on him. These three characters were heroes in this book according to my definition of a hero.
Courage is when you know you’re beaten. The character Atticus, for instance, who was a seasoned lawyer acted courageous defending Tom Robinson. Tom Robinson was a black man who was accused of raping a white girl. Atticus was appointed to defend him. Jem was happy because he thought his father had won the case but Reverend Sykes loathed telling Jem “Now don’t you be so confident, Mr. Jem, I ain’t ever seen any jury decide in favor of a colored man over a white man…”(Lee 208). Atticus was sure he wasn’t going to win the case, nevertheless he gave it a try. That didn’t stop Atticus from trying to defend his client Tom Robinson. Another part in the novel when Atticus was courageous was when he shot at the man street dog. Heck Tate the Maycomb Sheriff was not as courageous as Atticus so he handed Atticus the air rifles and with one shot Atticus took down the street dog. Miss Maudie says “I saw that, One Shot Finch” (Lee 97). Atticus was referred to as one-shot finch because of his shooting skills. The other incidence in the novel when Atticus portrays courage was when he was not scared when Bob Ewell threatened him. Bob Ewell was the man who accused Atticus’ defendant Tom Robinson of raping his daughter Mayella. Atticus thought Bob Ewell threatened him as some sort of revenge, but unfortunately Atticus was wrong because when Bob Ewell said ...
Everyone is born with some form of courage. The question is, in their lifetime, will they choose to use it and grow from it? People can be courageous in many different situations and through multiple types of courage. In To Kill A Mockingbird, the author, Harper Lee, values standing up for what is right as being the most important category of courage. Harper Lee displays acts of courage through the characters when Atticus defends Tom Robinson, Scout and Jem choose not to show their anger through violence, and town’s people stand up for Tom and Atticus; thus showing that the author believes that standing up for what is right is the most valuable attribute of courage.
A hero is someone who is admired for his/her courage and his/her need to help others. Some examples of heroes are Spiderman, Superman, Ironman, Superwoman, and Batman. However, the real heroes are strangers that risk their lives to help others. The book, The Outsiders, shows several heroes that sacrifice their own safety for the greater good. This book centers around the gang, greasers, and the feud between the greasers and Socs. Three characters that show enormous courage and save multiple lives are Johnny, Ponyboy, and Dally. In S.E Hinton’s The Outsiders, Johnny, Ponyboy, Dally emerge as heroes because they all risk their lives for another.
Courage is the ability to do something that frightens one. Courage is strength in the face of pain or grief. Throughout the course of World War 2, there were many people who acted in a courageous manner, as portrayed by Markus Zusak in his novel 'The Book Thief'. Weather it was putting their entire life on the line just to save some strangers from possible torture, hiding illegal people in their own houses with the possibility of being killed or smuggling thousands of people out of the Ghettos and into hiding places at the risk of death, there were some extraordinarily courageous humans in World War 2 who not only saved other people lives, but they did it all at
To me having courage makes me feel stronger than ever. Courage is one of the things that helped me join NJROTC, and it helps me get through the days. Before I learned what courage was or even used it, I was too shy to even say my name out loud. But when I joined NROTC they helped me break my shyness. And now I see clear, I know in the future courage will help me stand up and make it to my goals in life.
Life is scarier than we think it is. We are always surprised by the unexpected and we don’t know what awaits us around the corner. The Greasers have been overwhelmed with the unexpected nevertheless they are ready, waiting anxiously for those miscalculations to occur. The most imperative and dominant themes that concoct S.E.Hinton’s The Outsiders are courage, social class and the importance of family and support.
One of the best explanations of courage is the following by Maya Angelou: “One isn’t necessarily born with courage, but one is born with potential. Without courage, we cannot practice any other virtues with consistency. We can’t be kind, true, merciful, generous, or honest.” Her explanation summarizes all that courage can lead you to who you are in life. Courage is standing up for what you believe in, despite disapproval, pain, fear, uncertainty, or intimidation. Courage is challenging what is normal. Courage is giving voice to those who cannot speak for themselves. Courage is using whatever power available to educate the world about injustice. Courage is following your heart even when the path is not known. Courage is trying after failing.
"Get Out"-pg.79) This shows courage, bravery, empathy, and selflessness. One of the traits of a selfless person is the ability to put others first, as he saved Ponyboy and those kids despite the health hazards. People are what matter to Johnny. The children that needed saving are just like how Johnny needed saving from his abusive parents. He shows empathy as he knows how it feels to afraid, and doesn’t want the kids to be afraid like he was before. It is also very brave and courageous to go into a frightening, burning building just to save people. Another act of heroism Johnny demonstrates is when he stands up to Dally("Leave her alone Dally"-pg.22) This an courageous act. A hero is someone who steps up for others and Johnny steps up when Dally is harassing those girls. Dally is known to be unfriendly, mean and hostile, despite this, Johnny isn't afraid to tell Dally to stop. Johnny is a hero and is an amazing example of a hero, as anyone can be
In To Kill A Mockingbird, Harper Lee really showed how hard it is to show courage when almost the whole town is against you, but she made a great strong character named Atticus. In this journey Atticus had to do something that he didn’t want to do that could hurt his family and his career. He also fought off the town mob at the Maycomb jail. Have courage do something that no one else would do stand out don’t be normal do courageous
The first person I'm going to be talking about who displayed courage in the book Is Lemry. First of all, Lemry is the swimming coach for the school and a teacher of a class called Contemporary American Thought (CAT). A bunch of important characters are in that class. Lemry displays courage many, many times
Class Conflict and Violence Violence shows up in the real world in many forms, and so do friendship and family. When violence occurs, friends and family are present to help. In the book The Outsiders by SE Hinton, society is divided into 2 gangs: the Socs and the Greasers. The protection over Ponyboy, the protagonist, is shown by his gang members and his 2 older brothers, his best friend Johnny, and Darrel, his protective older brother. A theme of The Outsiders is that when faced with class conflict and violence, friends and family are present to help which is shown through the protection over Ponyboy by his brothers and his gang members, Johnny saving Ponyboy, and Darry protecting Ponyboy in the final rumble.
I automatically hitched my thumbs in my jeans and slouched, wondering if I could get away if I made a break for it. I remembered Johnny--- his face all cut up and bruised, and I remembered how he had cried when we found him, half-conscious… I could smell English Leather shaving lotion and stale tobacco, and I wondered foolishly if I would suffocate before they did anything” (The Outsiders,"S.E."Hinton 5-6) This shows that the Socs only go after kids smaller than them and have no remorse. Is also proves the fact that they beat up people when they are with their friends to back-them-up, and when they have some tobacco in their mouths.
