What are the different types of courage presented in the film? What does the film reveal about courage? What statements can we make about courage based on the film? 'The Help' set in Jackson, Mississippi conveys the struggles for the African-American society throughout the civil rights movement, where the rights of citizens for political and social freedom and equality was pushed to be equalised. The film "The Help" directed by Tate Taylor is an adaption of the novel written by Kathryn Stockett. It explores the lives of the African American maids and how they were treated throughout the civil rights movement during the 1960's. The theme of courage is explored through many characters’ lives as they stand up for what they believe, take a step out of their comfort zone and face many challenges. In the film it is shown through physical, social and moral courage, all of which play a significant part throughout ‘The Help’. Aibileen's identity is determined by her place in society, a maid. As she embraces a central role in the writing project with Skeeter, she becomes more courageous and finds a new identity as a writer Not only does Aibileen go against the law to help Skeet, her decisions could also result in danger as she is publishing a perspective never been told. The segregation between the African-American and the white society took courage. Walking to the bus every day, not having the opportunity to have the same rights, and not being wealthy enough to provide a sustainable for your family was a struggle for these people throughout the time. Having the courage to stand up for yourself and face many challenges through the civil rights movement allowed the characters to explore a different side to themselves and other throughout the story
