Courage In Miss Peregrine's Home For Peculiar Children

Courage is a well-used theme throughout many important novels, this specific theme is a very important aspect of any good story. For example, In, Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children, the theme of courage is most definitely a salient focus. It is of frantic use throughout this novel and is shown in many different ways. In the novel, Miss Peregrine's Home For Peculiar Children, the theme of courage is displayed through the characters of Emma Bloom, Millard Nullings, and Jacob Portman.

Emma Bloom is courageous. This can be proven using examples, such as Emma’s great love for Abraham Portman (Grandfather to Jacob Portman). After he (Abe) left, her heart broke into millions of pieces. It took her quite a bit of courage to say goodbye

to him but they continued to write letters to each other, until he stopped writing back. Emma later discovers that the reasoning for that, is because Abe had found another love, and they had started a family. Later on in the story, Emma falls in love with Jacob Portman (Abe’s Grandson). It definitely takes her a lot of courage to forget about how Abe had betrayed her heart. She uses courage to try and trust Jacob not to do the same thing, and was very brave in doing this. Now, even further in the novel, the hollowgast and whites come back. Emma is tired of everyone offering themselves up to stay behind and fight the hollow. She uses heroism and suggests that she stay back, because she knew that her peculiar powers gave her a better fighting chance, “If anyone stays behind it should be me! I can fight it with fire!” (Riggs 302), although her sacrifice was greatly appreciated, Jacob and the others didn’t allow her. Later on, Jacob and Emma were being hunted by that same hollow. She shows bravery in helping Jacob try to distract it. She does so by using fire to draw it’s attention towards herself. These few examples demonstrate scenarios where Emma Bloom is courageous.

Millard Nullings demonstrates courage within this particular novel. It is justified In this very specific situation. The peculiar children are all standing along the beach. Millard, Emma, and Jacob, are gathered in a huddle, drenched in lake water. This is just moments after they swam out, in attempt to follow Dr.Golan. After he shot his firearm at them (Emma, Jacob, and Millard), they swam back to shore. Millard shows a great amount of courage when he offers to swim out to save Golan, “He can’t shoot what he can’t see. I’ll go “ (315). He shows even more when he goes through with it. While he is executing his dangerous plan, he gets shot in the act of his miraculous bravery. Thus proving his presenting of courage in the novel.

Jacob Portman shows exceptional amounts of courage all throughout the entire
novel.

At the beginning of the book he was a sarcastic boy who had a great hatred for his life, and as the story urged towards the end, he became a respected man trying to save those whom he deeply cares for. It is obvious that Jacob hosts a significant amount of bravery, especially when he explores the old, and demolish, ruins of the house. He did so even though he could feel of a dark and tragic event that had previously happened in the house “I stood in the sudden breeze wondering what could possibly have done that kind of damage, and began to get the feeling that something terrible had happened here “ (85). When Jacob attempts to tell his father the truth, and how he is leaving on a trip, he is displaying courage. He also exhibits strength when moving through the painful death of his Grandfather. He believed in his Grandpa, he knew he was a good man, despite what everyone else said and thought. It was exceptionally challenging for Jacob to hear what people had to say about his beloved Grandpa. Now, after Jacob had gone to the island to discover the truth, he found it, and he fell in love with the peculiars, Miss.Peregrine was kidnapped. His audacity came in helpful when rescuing her and hauling her back to refuge. Jacob definitely has demonstrated a significant amount of courage in this

novel.

In the novel, Miss Peregrine's Home For Peculiar Children, the theme of courage is displayed through the characters of Emma Bloom, Millard Nullings, and Jacob Portman. These three Characters are rather well representatives of the theme courage, and their countless acts of bravery is immensely inspiring. They are all heros in unexplainable ways and made the story extremely special. Last of all, Their courage shone through at all the appropriate moments, when it was most needed, and when all hope was lost. They delivered what everybody thought was impossible at desperate moments, courage.
