Counseling is a helping approach that emphasize the emotional and intellectual experience of a client, how a client is feeling and what they think about the problem they have sought help for.
The role of the counselor is to enable the client to explore many different sides of their life and feelings, by talking openly and freely. Communicating in such a way it is rarely possible with family or friends, who are likely to be emotionally involved and have opinions and biases that may be detrimental to the success of the counseling. It is important that the counselor is not emotionally involved with the client and does not become so during counseling sessions. The counselor neither judges, nor offers advice. In counseling this is generally conducted in a structured way that incorporates extended learning ,courses and continual self-awareness and self-development.
At the start of every counseling relationship some form of client assessment must be made. This evaluation may be accomplished during one appointment with the counselor or over a number of arranged sessions. The reason for this evaluation is to allow the counselor the opportunity to clearly understand the problems the client wishes to address and improve.
Once a counselor has been able to evaluate the client, and the presented issues and problems, the counselor will be able to allocate an agreed time for future counseling appointments. The counselor, or therapist, will also be able to review various situations, issues and concerns, throughout the course of their counseling relationship with the client.
Ending a counseling relationship, especially if it has been positive, can be a very difficult thing. It's important to recognize the positive impact the counseling has had and express appreciation. Discussing what a client has gained from counseling will serve as a reinforcement to continue acting on lessons learned and may also reveal areas where there is still potential for growth and
