Our world is filled with symbols like logos, flags, and brands. In the novel “Lord of the Flies” a plane crashes and leaves boys stranded on an island with no food and water. There are a lot of symbols that are shown in the novel, many with a deep message. The most important symbols in the novel are the conch, lord of the flies, and the island. The couch is a very important symbol throughout the novel because it represents a deep message of order, unity, and authority. When Ralph and Piggy find the couch, the couch starts to become very important to them and a powerful symbol of civilization. The Lord of the Flies also represents the darker sides of human nature and society. The Lord of the Flies shifts the boys' unity, civilization, and hope to chaos, savagery, and leading to the death of Simon, Piggy and the couch being destroyed. The Island in the novel is symbolized as the Garden of Eden with its vast surrounding of water, mountains, beaches, forests, and its isolated environment. Later on in the novel, the Island changes from a paradise to a hellish place. It starts to become a place where there is no escape and it's no longer paradise when Piggy finds out they will never get rescued and says “We may stay here till we die” (Golding, 174). Although it seemed at first that it was a vacation in paradise, the boys start to come back to reality and realize that they will never be rescued. The Island's heat and how hot it is there also symbolizes hell, that they are really in a hellish place and there's no escape. This also explains the chaos and deaths that go about at the end of the novel when everyone loses their minds and chaos
