Cosmetology has led me to dentistry. At fifteen, to better support my family financially, I pursued a cosmetology license. For two years, I balanced school, a part-time job and a 1500-hour cosmetology course. Shortly after becoming a licensed esthetician, I was promoted to a team manager and I trained others in technique and use of equipment, distributed work, made quick decisions in a fast-paced environment and accommodated customer complaints. As an esthetician, I did an initial consultation, monitored progress and level of client satisfaction. Between customers, I sanitized the room and sterilized the equipment and prepared necessary product and machinery, which increased my ability to multitask efficiently. I gained leadership skills, as I had to supervise my team despite their seniority. With my clients, I learned the value of effective communication and the ability to target and correct problems to satisfaction. I enjoyed working within a team in an environment with diverse age groups. As an esthetician, I became interested in the human body and the importance of healthy diet and exercise. I started cosmetology to support my family but I began to realize how much I loved to employ my hands to improve someone else’s quality of life. Working as an esthetician gave me the confidence that I wanted to work with my hands. Having the privilege of being raised in a family of doctors, my observations of family members in the health field grew into a passion of my own to help others. This desire to help others, coupled with my academic interest in the sciences and love of human interaction, led me to consider dentistry for a career. I personally felt the imperative need of dentistry through my father, who received serious inju... ... middle of paper ... ...tal school. Research has showed me the necessary creativity to solve convoluted problems, which are applicable in treating patients in a clinical setting. Growing up with financial troubles has fostered empathy for those less privileged in our community and has taught me to be open-minded to others’ circumstances, appreciate diversity and to be unprejudiced, which I believe is an essential tool as a dentist who deals with a variety of social groups. Besides continuing to live in America, completing my studies and practicing in this country would be the highest honor. I am strong in both mentality and fitness and possess the disposition to undertake the demands of being a dental student and a dentist. I am wholly committed to my future career and coupled with my academic prowess and work experience, I believe I am competent aspirant in this demanding profession.
All the various factors that lead me to dentistry amounted to just a part of my decision to become a dentist, the other half of my decision came from the simple question, “(w)ill this be a satisfying career for me?” A satisfying career, to me, is defined by whether or not I can use my career as a means to assist others and experience a sense of accomplishment and self-gratification in helping others. The notion of a satisfying career was one that came through personal experiences. Being a former Medicaid recipient, I was thankful to those that worked in the public health sector to help those in need, including myself and my family. Through my past experiences, I felt obligated to reciprocate the resources and assistance that I had received. At the end of my career, I hope to reflect back on my career and experience a sense of accomplishment and fulfillment for having helped others throughout my career; this is what will amount to successful career, from my point of view.
Being an Esthetician is an incredibly fulfilling job that involves helping people, with endless opportunities, education and an immense amount of different career paths to take. Being an esthetician means you have the power to help make a difference in people’s lives every day, by teaching people how to protect and take care of their skin; the largest organ of the body. Esthetics is a career that involves taking care of the health and well being of the skin, by studying ingredients, product development and chemistry to figure out how clients can best protect and preserve their skin without being taken advantage of by the mass amounts of fake products out there. Estheticians also perform different skincare treatments, waxing services along with
Out of all the careers in the world, a dental hygienist probably has one of the most interesting and flexible jobs. Not only is this career interesting and flexible, but it is also very helpful towards others and usually pays pretty well too. Eventually one day I might decide to change my mind about working in the cosmetology field but for now I will stick with my main career goal. I lost a lot of interest over the weeks working on my senior project.
I can remember being a little boy sitting at the piano in church, listening to the preacher talk of how Jesus washed the disciples’ feet, which symbolizes the idea that we are here to serve. That message profoundly resonated with me throughout life. It was not until I began accompanying my grandmother to her multiple dental visits that I was able to see how I could put this calling of service into action. I saw firsthand the significant positive impact my grandmother’s dentist was able to make in her life, which encouraged me to want to learn about the field of dentistry. I then started researching dental health and learning of the importance of oral healthcare and how it affects the entire body. I then began to learn of how patient access to proper dental care was limited because of several factors such as, financial barriers, transportation, and dental fear, especially in the underserved minority communities. Given the shortage of black dentists, I realized I could make a positive difference by being an inspiration to those in the community, as well as serve in a professional career that would provide needed healthcare to the community. This is when I began to develop such a strong passion for

The practice of improving the beauty of others may seem insignificant to some but for those in process of studying the cosmetology industry take great pride in the work they hope to produce. Hair stylist and nail technicians improve the way people look and feel about oneself to better improve self confidence; cosmetologist strive to do the best they can to achieve the look that their client may be searching for. However, these techniques must be taught thoroughly and without the proper teaching techniques, the upcoming cosmetologist may feel behind and uncertain about their abilities when performing on clients. Without the proper and professional ways of teaching, the student struggle to ever gain success in the business; this business builds only from the repetition of great work and failing to achieve the overall style of the desired look from the client will result in a failing business. The search of finding a successful and up to date school requires more work than one may assume.
What started out as a summer position, eventually evolved into year round employment as my interests heightened and their appreciation of my work and dedication grew. My strong work ethic only increased as I began to understand the vital role of dentistry, including the diagnosis of teeth and tissue problems, prevention of disease and a plan of action to avert any future
From caving to spearfishing, school, and personal fitness alike, I approach all of my hobbies and interests with passion and an internal drive for perfection. Dentistry is no exception, as my mother’s career as a doctor, and a kind family orthodontist have equipped me with a strong dive to explore the exciting field of dentistry. Rooted in medicine and surgery, and requiring a skill set which I enjoy, yet still able to remain somewhat removed from the rigors of persistently “on call” physician, I am confident dentistry lies in my future. However, it was not until I had had the exceptional opportunity to work with and shadowing two different, yet equally electric and interesting individuals within the field that I became absolutely certain

“What made you want to become a dentist?”- I have been asked this question numerous times over the last five years since I embarked on my career path in the field of dentistry. I marvel in the bewilderment people have in trying to understand why on earth anyone would want to work in people’s mouths all day. Truthfully, it was my own pediatric dentist who inspired me to want to become a dentist and whom I aspired to be like. I remember being greeted by the friendly faces in the waiting room, playing with the toys until I was invited to sit in the bright green dental chair for my checkup. It was there that I learned the importance of oral health care and where my fervor for oral health care was born.
It was August 2001, the first time I stepped foot into a school in the United States. The year before I was in my native country of South Korea, which has a much different culture than that of the United States. In retrospect, it was during this time of transition that provided a foray into my discovery of dentistry. Not many months after my family and I moved to the U.S., I met a dentist who allowed me to shadow and perform basic dental duties such as replacing the rubber bands on patients ' braces, which he insisted would help my dexterity. Performing these tasks reminded me of my favorite childhood hobbies such as building miniature cars and robots. This experience gave me the opportunity to develop my dexterity with tools and sparked my
