History has shown us, with great power comes great responsibility. The great power aspect has not been much of a problem whereas responsibility has been for police. When officers begin training and attending the academy, they soon recognize the immense authority they will acquire. Documented facts such as textbooks and reports have shown many officers handle control and responsibility, although it’s a small percentage of officers who are corrupt. Due to these “rotten apples” and even whole departments being corrupt, gave way to the lack of trust in police departments nationwide. Police corruption is defined as the abuse of police authority for personal or organizational gains. Corruption comes in many forms and varies in severity.

As aforementioned the frequency of police corruption occurring is less common, since the activities tend to happen in secret and there’s only a few rotten apples. In several countries, corruption involving the police not only exists but could potentially become customary. A study of corruption was performed focusing particularly on the Rampart scandal. The Rampart scandal refers to prevalent corruption of the anti-gang unit in the LAPD’s Rampart division, in the late 1990s. The study suggested that certain forms of corruption may be the standard, rather than the exception, especially in American policing. This can be easily proven due to the vast amount of corruption that occurred in the prohibition era, the officers would look the other way for bootleggers and in turn received a gratuity of illegal liquor. A more prevalent example is the beating of Rodney king on March 3, 1991. Corruption ran rampant through the LAPD but they are not the only department, and corruption goes far beyond the local leve...

...are anticorruption the officers will most likely follow suit, however the officer’s ethics play a vital role in how they carry out their duty along with their interactions with the public.

In conclusion will America ever be able to rid policing of corruption? Is it possible and plausible to mandate a nations law enforcement agencies to follow all the same rules? Well the agencies must follow the laws. When the department starts to get out of hand at the local level, either the state police may step in or the F.B.I may send internal affairs to conduct a federal investigation of the department. No matter how many studies are conducted on the different types of corruption and criminological theories can only offer so much. Various factors like the officers personality can cause him or her to become corrupt. We can never truly stop it, It’s entirely up to the officer.
