Serpico by Peter Maas is about how a man was a cop and stood by what he thought was right and wrong. It is about how in the 1960s there was a lot of corruption in the New York Police Department. It is about how a man deals with payoffs, shakedowns, drug dealers, etc. Serpico was one of those cops that couldn’t be paid off or be quiet with what has happened on the field. I have yet to read the whole book but I will discuss what I have read and the concepts that I understood. The main character Frank Serpico is a long hair, bearded, short man that would dress laid back most of the time but if needed will dress up. In Chapter 1, it is known that he had just returned from a two-week vacation to meet the narrator to talk about his vacation. They sit down to drink and I noticed that it was mentioned that he wasn’t a big drinker and was very conservative. Although he does seem reserved that didn’t cover the fact that he did have a few relationships with a few women throughout his life. Serpico was the only sibling …show more content…
out of four that hadn’t married yet. This wasn’t surprising because he was always working and never let anything get in the way of his work. The theme of this book, so far, is just corruption and what is right or wrong.
I feel as if the author was trying to first explain the life Serpico had and his background to provide reasons for his seriousness with his job. When the author wrote about how he was shot and was just trying to get better it gave an insight on how he reacts with this occurrence in his life. Personally, I think that the book is being told both logically and emotionally. Logically because Serpico is a cop and has to follow specific rules and does things by the book. He never strays from the rules he was sworn into by the police department. Emotionally because he has been hurt on the job and even threatened but he never gives in. Right when I though he was going to sink into the corruption of the department he didn’t. He became strong and stuck with his own thoughts and feelings. The emotion in this book is very interesting because it is going from present to past then back to
present. My overall opinion about the book so far is that it is eye catching. The cover itself makes you think about what it is about. The quote at the bottom, “the classic story of the cop who couldn’t be bought” catches your attention at first glance. I would recommend this book because it is interesting and very informative. I would recommend it because of the way it is written with the past wrapped into the middle of it. If I had to explain it to someone I would say that if they wanted an insight of how the police system works and how a correct officer of the law behaved to read this book. This report was to explain the corruption that Serpico went through in the department. I didn’t get to finish the book so my knowledge is limited but after reading what I read and other reviews about it, I came to the conclusion that the book did in fact explain all the corruption he went through and the hurt as well.
Needless to say that this book didn't help me accomplish that. There are a number of reasons to like the book. As the reader, I enjoyed the story and the idea of the head of police writing it, and questioning much of what happened in chicago between the gangs and police. I appreciate the way that the book calls into question some of the reasons why people do the things they do, and how they do it, also how certain people react to the idea of conflict in different ways and treat the situations. The several different conflicts in the book each raise interesting questions for readers about how these events actually took place. Some readers may not have liked the style of repettos writing but because I could read it, it was enjoyable. I liked the book because of the detail the author went into and how he portrayed the events in the story. The detail in the photo, and the fact that the author including pictures to show the reader what really happened in chicago was a game changer, never before had i seen pictures in a book, that really shows the theme of the story. Being a book enthusiast, and finishing reppetto’s book, Its combination of description and especially within the chapters that include sicilian gang this book is one of the best mafia stories i've read. The conversations between characters, even though there are very few and most of the book is details and descriptions of events, they’re
The book is great with the plot mainly focused in the courtroom, but it feels like the author put the plot of the story from different events that happened to younger people and not from one whole event. Finally, the document went into depth of how the defense attorney went on to get every piece of evidence as possible to make the eyes of the jury see that Brenton Butler was not the person that shot and killed the
After reading the story, I found I had mixed emotions about it. To explain, when we were getting into detail and finally finding out what really happened the day of June 28th, I found myself completely interested and glued to the book. I also enjoyed the way the incident was explained because I felt like I was there watching it all happen from the great detail. I enjoyed Phillips style of writing because through his writing, he really came off as an intelligent person who is very familiar with the legal system. The book is an easy read, and I liked the non-pretentious style of writing. I did not find myself struggling with reading the book at all, which made the overall experience that much more enjoyable.
The book isn't just about the cold working of a criminal empire. Boxer tells his story with unexpected sensitivity and a Chicano brand of optimism. The man is highly charismatic. Yet, there is a dark side shown that is absolutely sobering. It's the part of him that is a frighteningly intelligent and ruthless. He shows us a man who can find dark humor in a jailhouse murder.
The "Corrupt Bargain" 1824. As the "Era of Good Feelings" under James Monroe came to an end in 1824, the old congressional caucus system for choosing presidential candidates had broken down. Four candidates towered above the others: John Quincy Adams of Massachusetts, Henry Clay of Kentucky, William H. Crawford of Georgia, and Andrew Jackson of Tennessee. All four rivals professed to be "Republicans."
If the name Serpico sounds familiar, it may be remembered from a movie. Frank Serpico is portrayed in the 1973 movie, “Serpico” starring Al Pacino. This movie may be loved by many but it’s important to realize that its characters are real men and the story line is very real. Although most police officers work very hard to do their jobs within ethical standards of the law, it is often not hard to find some type of corruption within a department.
The theme of The Catcher in the Rye is simple. J. D. Salinger uses this novel to draw a clear distinction between the purity of childhood and the wickedness attained when one reaches adulthood. Salinger uses multiple literary devices including diction, symbolism, tone, and even the title of the novel to drive home his ideas about the innocence of children and the corruption of the world.
Corruption is a common event that has happened many times in various countries. There are different types of corruption that can happen, and each type has different effects on countries and the people within them. The overall theme of corruption used in Latin American literature describes three different emotions as an effect of the corruption. The author Claribel Alegria wrote three poems that show corruption causing depression within the country, war corruption causing guilt within the participants, and self corruption causing envy within themselves.
This book is a Modern Criminal Fiction novel story that produces suspense, tragedy and mystery. It brings a gloomy kind of mood mixed with action and suspense.
Police corruption is a difficult issue cities have to deal with and one of the oldest problems in the police force. Corruption can be defined as the mistreatment of public power for personal benefit or private and the use of excessive force either emotional or physical. In this essay I will explain in detail federal indictments of Los Angeles Country Sheriff officers use of mistreatment of jail inmates and visitors. Another topic I will explain is the transfer of Los Angeles Country Sheriff hired officers with questionable background. Finally I will end by analyzing the hiring of new Sheriff deputies under the “Friends of the Sheriff” program. There are several ways police departments could take to reduce police corruption. The three areas I think should change are the training officers further in how to diminish abuse, improving personal character of officers, and incentives program.
Corruption is a persistent problem that plagues the world and it knows no boundaries. Transparency International defines it as the “abuse of entrusted power for private gain” (2013). For the purposes of this thread, ‘corruption’ is defined as any individual, collective, or structural act or process that permits the use of public authority or position for private gain. This definition captures the broad and many ways individuals and institutions abuse power and the public trust. In regard to whistleblowing, much conflict stems from the context in which the whistleblower is viewed. We will examine the case of NYPD Narcotics Detective Frank Serpico who was regarded a snitch and a rat by fellow officers who were on the take and complete a what would you do dilemma.
It sounded to me more like a biography of Paul Kemp’s life during his time in San Juan than a fictional book. I am not a fan of reading historical books, but the cover was nothing like i’d thought the book to be. The cover was intriguing, but when it came to reading I wasn’t intrigued by the book. I would have liked it to go at a faster pace in which could have hooked me in the beginning of the story. I also wish the author had put more drama into the story to make it a more compelling read for people like me who are not fans of reading historical
Roy bit his lips and craned his head even further into the book so the times new roman font was mere inches from his face. No, he wasn’t gripped by the book’s plot, that was a facade. Rather, his eyes were trained on a teenager, whom he presumed was seventeen, who had two girl with her who screamed popular. Despite this being his first mission alone, he still had his whole adolescence worth of experience of getting a rough definition of people and the girl he was tailing was something he could never get along; she, Melody, was his polar opposite, a prep.
Authority in a society is a necessary evil which when unfettered, results in the abuse of power. Power has long been considered a corrupting and a disrupting force in function and in influence. Underlying motives and greed fuel those who seek to gain and or abuse this power. The Crucible examines this twisted force as it corrupts societies’ clergy, blinds its justices, and empowers those who seek to abuse it. Arthur Miller shows how power can be a corrupting influence and how it can blind the judgment of authoritative figures.
Conceptualizing Corruption in South Africa Conceptualizing Corruption in South Africa Amr Taha El Baba Lebanese American University SPECIFIC PURPOSE: To persuade my audience that corruption could cripple the progress in South African societies. Crime and corruption are not relevant to the degree of poverty present in a country as some of you might think. Corruption is a social phenomenon that every society deals with, regardless of the level of development in the country. What makes corruption a dangerous social phenomenon is its ability to adapt to the conditions present in any country.
