Corruption in the government plays a huge role in the collapse of developing nations. “In the developing world, corruption is public enemy number one,” said World Bank Group President Jim Yong Kim. “We will never tolerate corruption, and I pledge to do all in our power to build upon our strong fight against it.” For economic policies to make a difference, we need to have reliable leaders who are able to execute them. Like Yong mentioned at the World Bank meeting, if not immobilized corruption has the ability to slow down the development rate of a nation: as the corruption rate increases, the development rate decreases. According to the Corruption Perception Index 2013, fifty-eight of sixty corrupt countries are developing! This is brought on …show more content…
As the level of corruption increases, citizens loose allegiance and support for their government. For instance, Ethiopia, a country that is considered to be one of the fastest-growing economies in Africa in recent years, is having a difficult time developing due to the lack of foreign investors based on their rate of corruption. Ethiopia ranks 113 of 176 countries on the Corruption Perceptions Index of Transparency International. Occupations that have the highest rates of corruption include politics, finance, land administration and taxation. (Inter Press News service). At the World Economic Forum on Africa, Africa Progress Panel reported that the continent is losing more through illicit financial outflows than it receives in aid and direct foreign investment. In the past when foreign aid is brought to Ethiopia, the intervention is often hindered by the corrupt government officials who over tax revenues brought on by the intervention. This leads to discouragement of foreign aid coming into the …show more content…
Each nation is focused on improving its standings in international politics and is not considerate of other nations. This means that most states are able to exploit less developed countries in order to benefit their selves. One major example of this is the colonial taxation France has on 14 African countries, such as Haiti and Togo, both still paying colonial taxes for their independence. That is forced to occur in 14 African countries to France. Countries such as Haiti and Togo are still paying colonial taxes for their independence. In 1957, Francois Mitterrand prophesied, “Without Africa, France will have no history in the 21st century.” This was confirmed in 2008 when French president Jacques Chirac stated: “without Africa, France will slide down into the rank of a third world power”. This might be shocking for some and almost impossible to believe, but the facts are that France’s taxation brings about 500 billions of dollars from Africa every year (the bridge magazine). This means that these developing countries are inputting 85% of their foreign reserve into France’s central bank leaving the citizens in these states in poverty. In order to pay the colonial taxation, these countries
Political corruption can lead to the downfall of societies because when citizens find out, they won’t have any respect for their government/leaders because of the bad things they do. Lack of respect can cause riots/outbreaks in cities.
The runaway corruption in the country harms the business environment and causes collapse of various established institutions and industries.
In Annawadi, the slum setting of the book “Behind the Beautiful Forevers,” nearly everything falls under the law of the free market. Things that most countries deem “basic rights,” the Indian people of Annawadi have to pay for. Clean water, education, and medical attention from hospitals are just a few things that are exploited by police officers, gangs and slumlords. The liberalization of India caused the country to begin a process of economic reform. People from the countryside flocked to the cities to find work in the new booming economy that no longer depended on its agriculture. With the increase in population around the bustling cities, came competiveness for opportunity. This competiveness made poverty rates skyrocket, making corruption (and corrupt activities) in Annawadi the only clear way of making it out of the slums. “In the West, and among some in the Indian elite, this word, corruption, had purely negative connotations; it was seen as blocking India’s modern, global ambitions. But for the poor of the country where corruption thieved a great deal of opportunity, corrupti...
Serpico (1973) is a movie that reveals the true story of Frank Serpico who was the only honest cop in the New York police sector at his time. The film shows the realistic view of the corruption that was evidenced in the New York police and highlights the character of Frank as being honest and courageous. Although he started as an inexperienced cop, he later worked as an undercover officer and was determined to bust all the criminal activities especially the drug dealers and pushers. Unlike the other cops, Serpico refused to take any bribes from the wrongdoers. More so, he felt that the other officers were doing wrong by accepting bribes and wanted to expose the situation. The other officers were so corrupt that they collected more money through bribes than the salary they earned, a situation that did not please Serpico. His strong stand concerning corruption made his friends turn against him, placing his life in danger. The anti-corruption efforts of Serpico jeopardized his life at the hands of his colleagues. He was later transferred to the Narcotics Squad where he was shot by a drug dealer after his partners betrayed him by failing to support him. The cop was then rushed to hospital. The shooting made Frank deaf since it affected the brain, rendering
In my opinion, corruption cannot be stopped but it can be reduced with the willingness of the people, as I mentioned above there could be plenty of recommendations but it’s all up to that person to put the effort. I think corruption is a choice; we all have voices and rights and if we chose to do unlawful things there is no one to blame but ourselves. However, there is corruption in every field of job out there. Corruption has been around for years and years and it will continue to be there in the future, it’s something that no one can eradicate. All countries around the world are facing corruption even the most powerful developed countries.
In the book, The Jungle, the readers comprehend a traditional American story of the tragic lives of immigrants coming to this country in search of new life, and instead finding greed and corruption. People who came into America in the time period of the late 1800’s to early 1900’s experienced a whole new world not quite what they were expecting. Living conditions and homes were not treated as well as the lower class American homes were. Wages were at an all time low with a decreased purchasing power of immigrant’s money. Everywhere they turned, someone was there waiting to cheat them. The government, political machines, and even everyday merchants on the streets treated immigrants
Corruption is something that is motivated by greed and fraud. It’s a very threatening personality that controls and destroys people’s lives and makes them the kind of person other people don’t want to associate with.
For example, a shift in confidence can drop consumer spending and investment, which as covered by Fischer, can lead to a massive cycle of underemployment of resources and a drop in aggregate demand. Confidence, which is an individual’s discounted evaluation of future income, is subject to numerous superstitions, biases, and subtle psychological influences. On its own, confidence can obviously impact economies to create recessions and growth, but its intertwining nature with other animal spirits makes it a more unpredictable function. This helps extend and exacerbate economic contractions, as the underlying causes can remain unknown. Corruption by its disposition makes confidence a multifaceted process, and helps lay the tracks for economic busts. Much like the most recent recession and as mentioned previously, corruption played a major role in stimulating the massive amounts of debt in the economy. Corrupt officials and bankers drove up debt, by misleading investors to the risk of their products and instruments. Corruption in this
informal system of government that many of the local areas of Afghanistan employ. This causes warlords and groups like the Taliban and al Qaeda to gain power and can contribute to continued conflict within the state.
There are countries that are not as lucky as America, where people have their rights taken away from them, like in Equatorial Guinea. Equatorial Guinea has a very corrupt government. It has been said that the voting has been rigged so that the president will win the election as many times as he wants. Most of the power is in the executive branch, so the president has most of the power of the country and no one can say anything about what he wants to happen. He president will harass the opposing parties so that he will win (Williams). In the article Equatorial Guinea HRW (Human Rights Watch) says, “Corruption, poverty, and repression continue to plague Equatorial Guinea under President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, who has been in power since 1979”. The “...per capita gross domestic product...” for Equatorial Guinea is $30,000, but yet most of the people live in poverty. The “...Democratic Party of Equatorial Guinea (PDGE)...” rule the political system, you could say that it is a monopoly. The president of Equatorial Guinea will have a say in court cases. The court cases that are sensitive get brought to him and he gets asked what he wants to do (Equatorial...). We should care about Equatorial Guinea because arrest without reason, torture captives and give little rights to women.
I chose to research on the topic of why police officers engage in corruption, because it’s a problem that’s very sensitive to me. I grew up in Lagos, Nigeria and whenever I thought of a police officer, I couldn’t help but think of corruption. I always felt police officers were only corrupt in Nigeria but once I started studying the criminal justice system in the United States, I realized it’s actually a global problem; some are just more exposed than others. According to Sayed and Bruce (1998), “Police corruption is any illegal conduct or misconduct involving the use of occupational power for personal, group or organizational gain.” They also referenced the South Africa’s law in trying to define corruption. The law states that whosoever offers
The existence of bribery and unethical behavior is rampant in the world market and may not change overnight. The question of bribery has been distilled in business literature as a question of ethics. In this situation at the airport with the customs officer, it is important to distinguish between business ethics and personal ethics. In a business ethics situation, the Foreign Corruption Practices Act would prohibit offering any bribe to the custom office – for example to free a shipment of goods that was lost in red tape (Pitman & Sanford, 2006). Most companies also have policies against bribery as well. In this situation, however the main issue at hand is that of personal ethics. When in a situation where your company is unknown and there is no business being conducted, normal business ethics and laws (including FCPA) do not apply only personal ethical standards.
Conceptualizing Corruption in South Africa Conceptualizing Corruption in South Africa Amr Taha El Baba Lebanese American University SPECIFIC PURPOSE: To persuade my audience that corruption could cripple the progress in South African societies. Crime and corruption are not relevant to the degree of poverty present in a country as some of you might think. Corruption is a social phenomenon that every society deals with, regardless of the level of development in the country. What makes corruption a dangerous social phenomenon is its ability to adapt to the conditions present in any country.
I disagree with Corruption is a Western concept and that some tradition societies are not applicable the ‘gift culture’. They can function without because there is no positive meaning. The onset to corruption, one being the giver and the other being the receiver are involved for personal reward. The rewards are obtained as a result of stealing the trust of society. An example would be that a Police officer only eats at one restaurant because the owner gives him free food. Then it’s known that the police officer only performs special services for that one restaurant while on duty. This action of corruption by far will only benefit the officer performing the act as well the restaurant owner (International Debate Education, 2011, p. 63 ).
Corruption can be defined as the use of entrusted power to accumulate public wealthy for personal benefit. Corruption is not peculiar to any country, continent or state; it is sure a global issue which is an endemic to all government all over the world. However, corruption is prevalent in the Niger delta region of Nigeria; public officers in this oil producing state of Nigeria are corrupt. Consequently, it has defied the Niger delta from developing politically and economically which has left the states reputation in a mess. Radicalization of youths, abject poverty and -political instability are the three leading effects of corruption in the Niger delta region of Nigeria.
