During the Gilded Age, there came a long time of business corruption, workers being exploited, long hours, and very hazardous working conditions. One of the biggest examples of corruption would be a political machine run by Boss Tweed, who managed to steal billions of dollars from the New York government in the process of building a courthouse. One of the most prevalent examples of business corruption was the meatpacking industry, with meat packers adding spoiled meat and chemicals to their products then selling these unsafe and hazardous products to people. Meat processing has gotten safer with the addition of the Pure Food and Drug Act, better safety equipment for the employees, and the Meat Inspection Act. Compared to the 1900s, the industry of meat packaging and food processing has improved vastly, with the introduction of hand and body protection in the form of a copycat chain mail that they wear under their aprons and on their hands, and with the addition of acts such as the Pure Food and Drug Act and the creation of the Meat Inspection Act. This has created a safer environment for the meat processor employees. Also, because of many strikes and organizations, there have been unions to improve working conditions such as shorter workweeks and safer working conditions. Back in the 1900s, there was a large problem with packaged food which killed many American soldiers in World War 1, such as canned food. These problems were caused by the unsanitary ways the meat was kept and processed.
