Imagine watching a pack of kindergarteners run around, releasing all of their energy, right in front of of you. Every child near you, is enjoying their time. On January 13, 2017, I gave back to my community by helping the Corpus Christi After School Program. Helping this program let me have a wider view of what it was like to be a child again, set aside all the difficult problems we face today. The Corpus Christi After School Program has gave me an opportunity to give back to my community while having fun with my surroundings.
The Corpus Christi After School Program is run by Diane Deluca and a variety of many different high-schoolers and college children. Everyone is always happy, enjoying their time, and always wants to have a good time. Each and everyone, including all the children, have a part in this program to help it reach it maximum. Without everyone doing their part, this program would not work the way it usually does.

I was glad and relieved that everyone had a good time. Every student that I helped did what I asked of them and they all tried to listen to the best of their ability. I tried my best to have as much fun as they were. There was not one moment that I did not see someone smiling. Everyone was always happy and never they never gave up in doing what they do best: having fun. The Corpus Christi After School Program has gave me the opportunity to give back to my community while having with my surroundings. During the five hours, I realized what it was like to be a child again: playing, smiling, and laughing. Helping also gave me a more wider view of what “having fun” meant. I attended the Corpus Christi After School Program from kindergarten through sixth grade, so I know that many people are enjoying their time because I did everyday I attended the Corpus Christi After School
“When schools, parents, families, and communities work together to support learning, students tend to earn higher grades, attend school more regularly, stay in school longer, and enroll in higher level programs.” (Van Roeckel, 2008, p. 1) Deer Valley High School in Glendale, AZ is the first high school built in the Deer Valley Unified Scholl District, and with a population around 1800 students, the high school is one of the bigger schools in the state. It has a tradition of family on its’ campus, where there are still teachers teaching that were there when the school opened in 1980. A number of former students have become new teachers on campus and just about all the teachers’ children have attended and graduated from the campus. With a school like ours, there are many connections to the community around it and it is demonstrated by the programs that bring in parent and community to help with the development of our students. There are numerous booster clubs run on our campus to help support student achievement on the sports fields, a school to work programs to teach the students necessary skills in different areas of either nursing, sports medicine classes, and in the culinary arts classrooms, and funding to our school to help ensure all students graduate on time. There are many programs on our campus, but I will discuss four of the programs: baseball booster club, C2G program, “school-to-work”, and the special education program sponsored by Arrowhead Hospital. These programs are designed to improve the relationships between the campus and the people in the community, and give all students on campus every opportunity to succeed in their future.
I began by tutoring at the Boys and Girls Club (BGC) and eventually became a teacher at the boys and girls club. The focus of my continued volunteer work was to enrich the children’s after school experience whether they needed help with homework or busy work. During my volunteer work the issue that stuck out in my mid continuously was social class or classism. The BGC emphasizes many different issues and points such as “creating aspirations for the future,” “Helping youth become responsible, caring citizens and acquire skills for participating in the democratic process is the main thrust of these programs and also to develop leadership skills and provide opportunities for planning, decision-making.” BGC encourages kids to engage in healthy and positive behavior as well as to help the youth build and discover creativity in the arts “Club programs help develop fitness, a positive use of leisure time, reduction of stress, appreciation for the environment and social and interpersonal skills.” (bgca.org)
Cornerstone Youth Center provides a place for kids ages twelve to eighteen to hang out after school. On any day of the week there are approximately thirty to thirty-five students attending the center. The students appear to be from low socioeconomic status. Also, some of the students have learning disabilities or behavioral problems, which lead them to perform poorly in school.
Teaching has been termed as more of an art which is highly devalued due to the complexities that are associated with it. To be able to comprehend what goes on in a learning set up, one has to interact with the actual environment on an ordinary day such that nothing is done out of the ordinary during the visit. The visits take place in two different schools that deal with children in the kindergarten stage. In this field report, the learner starts by looking at Sherwood Forest Montessori School’s Toddler Community Program. This will be followed by looking at Locust Pre-Kindergarten School both located in Texas. A comparison of both will be done within their contexts. With the help of the Me To We team at Queen Street Public School, I volunteered at a local food bank. The experience was quite educational and fascinating. We encouraged staff and students to donate non-perishable food items for the "We Scare Hunger" campaign. This was definitely a highlight of my grade five year because I felt very humble and warm-hearted by doing a simple act of kindness. In addition, I was chosen to participate in the "Intergenerational" program. This was created so that grade five students can learn more from the elders of the Burton Manor senior home. We had the privilege to learn about their history and interact with them through several educational and fun activities. If accepted, I will indeed join several clubs and teams to contribute my time and talents to make the school an exciting learning
The same year, I also participated in another after school class, based on the PALs program that many other schools take part in. Our original goal was to support and help younger kids with their homework, but soon after the program began, we expanded and began doing many other things. I helped in food banks, cleaned up our school, designed school T-shirts, and put together and hosted our school talent show. If you accept me to the Kealing Magnet Program, I will happily do whatever I can to help Kealing Middle School become an even better
I began my adventure at Tesnatee Gap Elementary school during the latter part of March. I had no idea what to expect at all. Previously, I had absolutely no experience with public school. Before taking my education course I had little knowledge of the way the public-school system worked, and no knowledge at all about the way public schools run special education classes. This was all so completely new to me, and I’m thankful that I had such wonderful teachers and classes to observe, as well as tons of applicable knowledge for me to take away and apply into my own classroom.
Introducing myself to Mrs. Smith the classroom teacher, and Mrs. Brown the teaching assistant; I explained that I will be observing the classroom. Mrs. Smith informed me that the name of the program is County Unified School District First 5 Pre K Academy, there are 12 elementary, 7 schools that have this program; a goal of the program is to have the other 5 elementary schools with the program. They are also part of a few other programs that make this program possible for the students: Color Me Healthy, CATCH, and First 5. Each of these programs have a high impact on the program, they help in their own subject of the program. This Pre k program is offered to students’ age 4-5 years old, and it is based on a first come first served basis.
...hese teachers have to step in a substitutes for other teachers that may call in. We try to help the best way we can. We have made some progress over the weeks. This is much more than just community service hours, we are helping our community. Some of these kids are in danger of having diabetes and high cholesterol and we want to get rid of the percentage that increases. We have gotten majority of these kids into playing and having fun with their peers. We get the kids that mostly don’t do anything and have gotten them to participate. We have come up with games and ways for them to have fun with their class and coaches. Almost every Friday we make our way to the coaches and ask where they need help. They joke around with us and then give us a group of kids. We come up with games for them to play and let them play and then they play these games with the entire class.
I went to the Seymour center on Sunday from about eleven a.m. to two p.m. It was very empty when I first arrived, but there was a surge of people a little after noon, possibly they had just gotten out of church. They were mostly families, which a few pairs of college students, and some lone adults or older couples. The range of the families was from very small, one parent one child, and as large as about three adults and four children. Everyone there was having a good time, only one kid cried the entire time I was there. The volunteers were interactive and happy and friendly. There was a lot of background noise but the atmosphere was engaging and cheerful.The Seymour center is an environment that encourages learning in children by catering to their short attention spans, while people who are older will have a harder time learning, proving it is a space meant to educate younger people because children learn differently than adults.
Alderwood elementary does a really good job at embracing the different backgrounds of every student. I learned a lot in my site placement about the many ways that a school can make big differences in the school climate and enjoyability of learning through community engagement. Participating in the afterschool clubs was such a valuable experience, and I wish more schools had the opportunity to have this free option for all students. Not only is it beneficial to working families to have free childcare, the students are also given a variety of opportunities to explore interests and work collaboratively on really fun projects. Alderwood is given this opportunity due to it’s status as a title 1 school, which the volunteers and teachers embrace as a way that makes Alderwood an important community. On Wednesday, Oct 7, the theme that stood out to me was generosity and gun violence. As we got into groups and discussed our service sites, it became apparent how important our actions have onto others. For example, we discussed different perspectives of how we conducted our services and how we made an impact. For that reason, this reminded me of when I conducted volunteer work at an elementary school. I helped to facilitate Halloween by helping the kids have a joyous and violent free trick or treating. In addition, this helped the kids focus on having fun and not having to worry about the gun violence that plaque’s their neighborhood. For that reason, I took pride in helping these children have a Halloween they’ll remember by not focusing

So just remember, this school board, business owners and our valuable partners believe in you and want you to reach all of your dreams! We 're counting on you to be that next generation to take over all that we 're doing. So you got to be qualified, you got to be prepared, you got to be hungry, and you got to take advantage of every opportunity that comes your way. Board members, you are raising the next generation up to be great! With your dedication to the CTE programs we 're only getting started. Now that you all have a better understanding of what CTE is and how important it is, I want to thank you so much for being here on behalf of our young people. The teachers of the school were very supportive, I loved them all. Being at school is very good in terms of dealing with different people. We were exposed very early to this world; where there are different attitudes and beliefs. I think having teachers with totally different minds has a role in our social intelligence development. I learned how to deal with people even if their beliefs, thoughts and styles do not meet mine.
I thought that the teachers did a nice job with their classroom set up. I felt like I could have kept myself busy all day just by looking at the walls and seeing the pictures of presidents and famous historic quotes by famous people of our nations past. One thing I really enjoyed was the time the teachers allotted me at the end of each class to reflect to the class. Not only throughout my past middle school, and high school experiences but also, and most importantly, my current college experiences, the temptations that I have had to endure have definitely been rewarding.
