There are nearly 400 different types of sharks that have been identified to this day, yet there are still new sharks being recognized every day. Atelomycterus marmoratus, also known as the coral catshark, is a member of the scyliorhinidae family, which is the largest shark family. The coral catshark belongs to the animalia kingdom, chondrichthyes class, elasmobranchii subclass, and the A. marmoratus species. Another common name for the coral catshark is the marbled catshark, which came from the original name, Scyllium Marmoratum. (Marmoratum being Latin for marbled) The life of the coral catshark is exposed and defined by looking in to the physical description, habitat and adaptations, feeding behavior, life history, and conservation status and threats. …show more content…
Coral catsharks can grow up to nearly 70 cm in length. They have a small head, catlike eyes, short tail, ten gill slits, a lean body, and two spineless dorsal fins that slant backwards. Coral catshark’s “enlarged branchial (gill) regions enable them to survive very low oxygen levels, high temperatures, and high salinity”. (“Descriptions and”) They are very easy to distinguish due to the white underbody and large quantities of black and white spots that cover the shark from snout to tail. Researchers believe that these sharks reach sexual maturity once they reach 50cm in length. Unlike most sharks, coral catsharks are oviparous. Instead of having a live birth, female’s lay two eggs on the ocean floor, which hatch anywhere from four to six months
Society is built on the fact that everyone is different: different gender, different hair color, different body types, and, most importantly, different opinions. Although conflict stems from different opinions, humans can not help but have their own thoughts and feelings about every situation. Different opinions, such as democrats vs. republicans or pro-life vs. pro-birth, are just a few examples, on the neverending list, of society spitting their views on a topic. Despite the fact that everyone is so different, people can learn from each other and grow their opinions after hearing the other “side of the story”. We may not always agree with each other, but we should just listen, understand, and respect the fact that everyone has different opinions.
The sabertooth cat, also known by its scientific name Smilodon Fatalis, is considered a true form fossil. A fossil is considered a true form fossil when scientists recover fossils of the actual animal or animal part. These bones were oftentimes subjected to physical processes while still on the surface. These processes include heat, cold, wind and rain.
Mojetta wrote about prehistoric sharks, and the history of these creatures. According to Angelo Mojetta, author of Sharks, Cladoselache genus, one of the first prehistoric sharks, was buried in sediment that kept it preserved. Unlike other sharks, Cladoselache genus had a circle of tiny plates around it’s eyes for protection against it’s victim’s attempts to fight back. These sharks lived over 400 million years ago. Sharks of the past could mostly be identified by their teeth, because shark’s bodies are made of cartilage. Another shark that was focused on was called, Stethacanthus. This shark had a very unique look. Stethacanthus had a brush like decoration on the top of it’s head, and an extra fin like part that had the same bristle like decorations on it. These characteristics were thought to be used as suction cups, to hitch rides from larger fish. One of the most famous sharks that looks like an over...
Low oxygen consumption rates were reported in this study, most likely due to the low standard metabolic rates of the nurse sharks. The nurse sharks also had a lower routine metabolic rate compared to other species which was attributed to their slower swimming speeds. Metabolic rate increased with temperature. The cost of transport was lower than is found in other species. This was attributed to the nurse sharks inactivity and less streamlined body. The cost of activity is high compared to other shark species. This means that nurse sharks have a higher metabolic cost of activity when switching from rest to movement. The difference in values found in nurse sharks as compared to other species is attributed to their less streamlined
Females are often looked down on by society as males stereotypically dominate the roles of machismo and independence, leaving no space for females to demonstrate their own strength. Coraline, a children’s animation intended to be a fantasy but instead a production laced with horror elements, includes numerous female characters that embrace society’s predetermined standards. As the audience follows the journey of the protagonist Coraline, stereotypes of women being dependent and not having a voice are unrefreshingly accepted by the female characters in the film.
Though food is everlasting in both the coral reef and deep sea, space is very limited. Organisms in both habitats have to compete for space and survival, having defense mechanisms to keep other species from killing out their kind. Some fishes in the coral reef hide in cracks and crevices along the rocks and corals to hide from their predators. Other fishes camouflage within the brightly colored corals to hide from predators, or even humans looking into their tank. The deep sea holds many small fish, but with large mouths. The large mouths and pointy teeth help the miniscule fish eat their prey, whi...
On average they weigh 4,000-7,000 pounds and grow approximately 16-20 feet long ( Great white sharks 1). < commentary needed>Great Whites are the apex predator of the ocean containing 300 serrated teeth and highly-developed senses to hunt prey. Sharks have a great senses of smell, the Great White can smell a drop of blood thousand of miles away. They’re hearing is very powerful , being able to hear the vibrations of prey distances of about 800 ft away and find the exact location through ‘ear stone’( Great white 3). A shark 's sense of hearing truly shows their uniqueness as an apex predator. In addition to great hearing they’re known to have great sight by being able to see up to 50ft away and transition into seeing in light and dark. Additionally sharks have a lateral line on their back that reaches from the front to the back tail, allowing
Thesis: Sharks should be conserved because they are an important part of the ocean, attacks are often incidental, and human behavior influences the behavior of sharks.
Most people think that sharks are large, fast-swimmers, and savage predators. This is true of some species and groups should be interested of the appealing aspects of biology found within it: all sharks have an excellent sense of smell; some can detect electrical discharges; some sharks give birth to one of the
The epidemic of the white pox disease in coral species was terrible. The way the scientists solved this mystery is the use of the Scientific Method. First the team had make an observation, next was to conduct the experiment, and lastly is too draw conclusions. I am going to tell you three out of the eight steps to the scientific method that the team of scientists used to determine that the white pox disease was the cause of the sudden demise of the Elkhorn coral.
Soft corals are very widespread among the Great Barrier Reef and other Indo-Pacific coral reefs. On the Great Barrier Reef they may cover up to 37% of the reef area (Bastidas, et. al, 2001). Even though soft corals are abundant on the Great Barrier Reef they have been overshadowed by the study of hard corals. Very little research has been conducted on them, yet they are just as fascinating as their hard coral neighbors. The main purpose of this paper is to explain why evolution has made it possible for soft corals to reproduce both sexually and asexually. To do this I will first introduce soft corals, then explain the types of reproduction soft corals are capable of, and finally explain why evolution has made it possible for soft corals to reproduce both sexually and asexually, using numerous studies to support my claims. Most of the information on this topic was very species specific, but this paper will explain the reproductive evolution of soft corals in a broader array that will pertain to the scientific order Alcyonacea, or all types of soft corals.
The morphology of whale sharks is mostly similar to aquatic fish species, but many specific traits help differentiate them from the rest. Whale sharks are the largest fish in the world and can reach a size of around 20 meters (Martins, C., and C. Knickle). This is often compared to the size of a school bus. The shark has a very large transverse mouth. They have 5 very large gill slits and have a larger first dorsal fin compared to the second one (Whale Shark). They have a distinctive spotted “checkerboard” pattern with stripes (Martins, C., and C. Knickle). It is not exactly known why they have this specific body marking. It is believed that the body markings act as a camouflage. The strange thing about whale sharks is that they have 300 rows of teeth that play no role in feeding (Martins, C., and C. Knickle).
Coral is a very sweet girl who enjoys participating in class activities, always willing to help her friends’ complete tasks and to assist them when they don’t understand something. She arrives at school with a smile on her face and a great attitude towards learning. When sharing time with her friends, she can lead or follow depending on the game they choose. Coral is able to choose an activity or game in the classroom, see them through and, when finished, tidy up.
Although there are hundreds of different species of corals, they are generally classified as "hard coral" or "soft coral".
One particularly interesting sea creature is the whale shark, formally known as Rhincondon typus it was first discovered in 1828 by Andrew Smith (Rowat 2012). This large fish is found globally in warm tropical oceans and prefers to stay within 200 meters of the ocean’s surface in waters ranging from 4.2 to 28.7 degrees Celsius (Stevens 2006). This creature can be found all across the globe in any warm tropical seas. Aggregations of whale sharks have been seen off the coast of Australia at times, although it is primarily a creature of solitude. Whale sharks are filter feeders that consume plankton as well as small fish and are harmless to humans. The whale shark is a species with a fascinating ecology, life history, behavior, anatomy
