Introduction
Every person experiences varying amounts of racism in their lifetime. For those who experience racism first hand, it can be hard to deal with. Coping with racism is something that each person handles differently. Some people choose to ignore it, and others choose to fight it. Of the various methods for coping with racism, humor can be a very effective method in dealing with the stresses caused by racism.
Theory
Racism, at its roots, is a conflict between different races. The Conflict Paradigm pits individuals against each other in the struggle to obtain superiority. This competition for social, material, and political resources is the cornerstone of hate, which in turn, is the powerhouse of racism. Conflict over the issue of

Reasons being people automatically assume people are discriminating against people based on the color of their skin, their ethnicity or the color of their skin. Discrimination, while prejudice refers to biased thinking, discrimination consists of actions against a group of people. Discrimination can be based on race, age, religion, health and other indicators. It is also considered discrimination when acts are preformed against a certain group of people (Citation). People are more likely to discriminate against somebody more than they would any other type of racist act because people do it without thinking about it. While there are people in this world who purposely attack someone based on their personal preferences, people tend to keep their discriminatory comments to themselves for the most part; due to the fact they don’t want to cause trouble. While there are many words that come to mind when it comes to discrimination, the word status seems to mind. Status is the responsibilities and duties a person experiences due to rank or position. People who feel they have high power over someone else tends to think more on a status level. They care more about where they stand rather than who stands around them. This being one of the reasons discrimination comes into play. People who hold high power are more likely to discriminate against someone below them regardless of their position and rank in the world. …show more content…

There are many stereotypes out there that cause certain people to think a specific way about different people. If someone has a different skin color, they may have a stereotype
Racism exists all around the world and is a big part of our society today. From schools, to work places, to even restaurants, racism is there because we, ourselves have constructed it but, not everyone can see it through their own eyes because we were all born with different perceptions. In Racism Without Racists by Eduardo Bonilla-Silva, racism is described in a variety of different ways whether it is due to biological factors or simply by saying that racism does not exist and people just need to work harder. Bonilla-Silva has experienced discrimination himself and he wrote this book to show that even though it is not extremely visible like before, such as segregation, it is subtler but still plays just as big of a role in our society as before.
“The practical disengagement of humor…helps explain the opposition between amusement and negative emotions.” (530) There are three effects of humor; irresponsibility, blocking compassion, and promoting prejudice. Humor can take away what we are/should be doing in life and sometimes there isn’t anything wrong with that. Sometimes when we hear a hateful thing we just laugh it off as if it was no big deal when it really was. “An

Many critics have attempted definitions of Black Humor, none of them entirely successfully. The most significant recurring features of these definitions are that Black Humor works with: absurdity, ironic detachment4; opposing moral views held in equipoise, humanity's lack of a sense of purpose in the unpredictable nuclear age, the realization of the complexity of moral and aesthetic experience which affects the individual's ability to choose a course of action5; and a playing with the reader's ideas of reality6.
Racism has been and will always be a problem in this world. Right now in America, prejudice and hatred is still being displayed every single day. This country cannot go a week without another racist incident headlining the news. Police brutality is the spotlighted form of racism these past two years. This is absolutely not the first time police brutality has taken the stage. It is fairly easy to find an article online about racism and police brutality because there is an abundant amount of cases. Racism is alive and a massive problem in America. Satire pieces take a solemn subject like racism and make it easier to converse about. The satirists also help people understand topics by making it simple and easy to understand.
These two kind of go hand in hand. Starting with getting off the path of least resistance, it can be as simple as not laughing at a racist, homosexual, and gendered joke. Getting off the path of least resistance will interrupt the natural flow and begin to make changes. When someone makes a joke of that nature, speak up and make them feel uncomfortable by challenging the way they think.

Racial profiling or stereotyping could diminish how a certain race is viewed. Racial discrimination can be a result of racial profiling and stereotypes in our present culture. Today, racial discrimination is used to approach citizens assumed to be criminals. This is called racial profiling. Although some argue that racial profiling is a necessary tool for law enforcement to protect our safety, it puts some people at a disadvantage while it privileges others.
Racism is the mistreatment of a group of people on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, place of origin, or ancestry. The term racism may also denote a blind and unreasoning hatred, envy, or prejudice (Dimensions of Racism). Racism has had a strong effect on society. Despite the many efforts made to alleviate racism, what is the future of African Americans' Racism's long history, important leaders, current status, and future outlook will be the main factors in determining how to combat racism. Racism is a case of ‘misplaced hate’ and ignorance, being not only discriminatory, but also seemingly foolish with disregard of all human commonsense. Why does racism still exist in today’s world? If it still occurs, has the world really progressed at all? Through extensive research methods and wide reading, it can be proven that racism is still present in the modern world.
For example, in the chapter “How to Fight Monsters” Junior’s peers initially pick on him at his new school. After an incredibly racist joke on page sixty-four of the novel, Alexie expresses how the comment makes Junior feel, when he said “ I felt like Roger had kicked me in the face. That was the most racist thing I’d ever heard in my life.” By giving the readers insight into Junior’s emotions; it allows readers to understand Junior better and understand how distasteful jokes are not humorous. Racist and ignorant jokes can negatively impact an individual’s self-esteem. The more aware society is of racism the greater chance of individuals to discontinue the use of slurs and hateful
I also thought that this documentary may help me, and possibly those who share beliefs similar to mine, to be more open to jokes regarding sensitive and taboo topics and in understanding why people choose to make these types of jokes. The documentary, as well as other significant texts have helped me realize that humor played a crucial role during the time of the Holocaust and continues to still play this role for many. Clementi (2013) states “producing art — and laughter — during the war was a way for the victims to array creativity, civilization, and pacifism against the brutality of genocide” (p. 258). This statement gives a bit of insight into why humor was used during the war and why it is still used today in regards to the saddening events that took place over the span of several years. Along with these questions, it will be crucial for both sides to understand where the line should be drawn on these types of jokes and who should ultimately be able to find humor in the Holocaust.
Most African Americans feel as though Caucasians aren’t allowed to joke around with them because of the serious events that took place in history and continues to take place today. In some situations African Americans can be deemed just downright sensitive because they know for a fact that Louis C.K isn’t a racist. Though the ultimate question becomes, is it ever going to be alright for any other race, besides African American, to tell an African American joke whether the world knows your racist or not? To avoid confrontation, racial jokes should completely be taken off of the table and not with just African Americans. There is no way to tell a racist joke and avoid the heat from the other race.
