Whether you like it or not that one song that keeps playing on that one station you like will consistently keep on playing until the mainstream decides to move on to the next best wave of songs to play. This is because that song is “cool” and we as people try to find the coolest stuff and attempt to be cool at one stage of our lives no matter whether we are young or old; we want to fit in with everyone else. Cool is a definitive term to describe what we as a society deem popular at the moment and is used to describe social status more or less. Pop culture is what revolves around our ideas and we speak our mind of what is trending at that moment of time.
The word “cool” to many of us means several different meanings to everyone in the world. To many of us it means what is currently up to date in pop culture. Many factors are involved in making that new hit on the #1 on billboard or advertising the newest electronic gadget. Advertising is one of the main factors in making something “cool” because it's guided towards the general audience where it’s a repeated sequence about that product. The media also makes things cool because they are the biggest channels of communication such as through social media or big websites such as reddit. The media plays a big role in making something cool because they have enough popularity already that they can be possible reliable sources for products. The media also are those who advertise and that's why we see advertising on the internet, tv, and radio. Friends and society can also influence in making something cool as friends are personal and they can greatly influence you into a new trend because they relate with you in some sort. These forms of variation are what makes up pop culture and what makes something cool and trending
How exactly do social trends start and how do they become such huge phenomena? The Tipping Point by Malcolm Gladwell explains how ideas, trends, and behaviors reach a “tipping point” (Gladwell, 2000). According to Gladwell, a tipping point is the peak of a particular phenomenon. The Tipping Point describes exactly how health epidemics, fashion trends, television shows, products, etc. become popular and last for elongated periods of time. When being cool you can see it as being socially constructed (Waren, 2014). Most people see cool as not being an object but just as seeing it as a word and self-confidence. Once one feel they are cool their self-esteem goes up and they find more self-control of how they life should be played out. The audience don’t have to be mean or break the rules to be cool there are many other things like helping out people in need or doing things you way without people telling you how things should be done. Even videos posted on the internet can become the biggest trend overnight, but disappear just as quick. Without realizing it, everyday these trends of thought affect the way we dress, live and think. Whether we like it or not, these thoughts are manipulated by popular culture. It is undeniable that “we are creatures of outside influences; as a rule we do not think, we only imitate” (Source A). Pop culture influences us through many forms: movies, television, music, art, and peers are some examples. Every big-city scene-kid or bored teenager in the suburbs stays connected to the moment's hot clubs, restaurants, hobbies and clothing. Trend Spotters travel the world, watch people shop, eat, and mingle, videotape and photograph them, study census data, examine online journals, chat online with tens of thousands of potential customers, and devour every slice of pop culture in order to keep up with the trends.
