One of the more popular religions that shared a role in influencing western civilization would be Christianity. Christianity is a monotheist religion that developed in a time period where polytheism was highly preferred. Although it had only a few followers in the beginning, it has made a lasting impression on civilization. One of its biggest roles was helping to end human sacrifice and slavery. Christians strongly disagreed in the degrading of human life. It was very common in the 1600’s for traditional punishments to be executed if someone had gone against you. Christianity shined a new light on the matter and gave an

Some experts also associate Western Civilization with European civilization because most of the civilizations took place in Europe, particularly from the period of BC onwards. The major attributes of the Western civilizations included belief customs, ethical values, political systems, traditional customs, and certain artefacts that were unique to each civilization. Although such attributes were unique in their developments, they were classified as either foreign or indigenous based on their

Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphic writing is one the oldest and most interesting forms of written language developed. There is evidence of its use from before 3200 BCE and Egyptian hieroglyphs remained in use for over 3,500 years. The Egyptian name for hieroglyphs translates to “language of the gods,” although the term hieroglyph actually came from Greek words meaning “sacred carving,” which the Greeks used to define the writing found on Egyptian monuments and temples (Ancient Egypt, Hieroglyphics, n.d.).
Ancient Egypt is considered to be one of the most significant eras in history, due to its lengthy existence and its overwhelming contributions to the development of western civilization. You could say that Egypt provided the building blocks for Greek and Roman culture, and through them, influenced all of Western tradition. Today Egyptian imagery, concepts, and perspectives are found everywhere; you will find them in architectural forms, on money, and in our day to day lives. We are able to distinguish various elements of its culture that played a key role in its development, such as agriculture, architecture, religion, and government to name a few. Egypt 's impact on later cultures was and still is immense.
There are many different ways that modern cultures in the west have been impacted and built upon, but there are two ancient cultures that were the most influential. The Greek and Roman cultures helped shape Western Civilization in many ways. Both were very important factors in the development of Western culture. The Greeks contributed through art, architecture, government, philosophy, education, and science. The Romans contributed through language, engineering, law, and government.
Development of Modern Western Civilization The development of the modern civilization began with the Greeks, then moved to the Romans, followed by the Byzantine Empire and through the Middle Ages. The ideas began with the Greeks and as these ideas spread to other civilizations following, and they began to advance them, or add to what the Greeks began with. Many values and other ideas that modern civilization uses today came from these civilizations. The modern western civilization development is the result of the initiation of ideas on democracy and education from the Greeks, leading to the Romans, where they expanded on the political, religious and economical ideas from the Greeks, thus leaving fundamental principles needed for modern society
This is believed to be the root of the beginning of the formation of the alphabet. By early times the ancient Egyptian writing system has 22 sets of hieroglyphics that represented syllables. This type of alphabet was never actually used to encode Egyptian speech though. The first form of a true alphabet in Egypt began in the Bronze Age. It was called Proto-Sinitic and was originally thought to be developed in central Egypt.
Around 2700 BC, the first alphabet was created. The first Egyptian hieroglyphs had a set of 22 symbols. And interestingly enough the word hieroglyph isn’t even an ancient Egyptian word, but a Greek word. According to the International History Project in 1999, heiro means- sacred and glyph means to carve in ancient Greek. Egyptian hieroglyphs were used to represent syllables that began with single consonant of their language; the hieroglyphs were primarily used as a pronunciation guide for logograms, writing, and transcribing lone words in foreign languages.
Ancient Mesopotamia was one of the first of the ancient civilizations. It formed in present-day northeastern Egypt, in the Fertile Crescent. The Fertile Crescent is a crescent-shaped region of good farmland created by the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers. The first people to settle in Mesopotamia made important contributions to the world, such as wheeled vehicles, and an early form of writing called Cuneiform. Later, the Phoenicians here developed an alphabet much like the one we use today. Also, the Sumerians of this region developed algebra and geometry. Most importantly, the Sumerians made extensive irrigation systems, dikes, and canals to protect their crops from floods. The Great Hammurabi of Babylon, another empire in the Fertile Crescent, made the Code of Hammurabi. It was the first significant set of laws in history. Also, the Hittites and the Lydians settled in Mesopotamia. The Hittites developed a way to produce strong plows and weapons. The Lydians created a system of coined money. The contributions from the region of Mesopotamia in ancient times are still used today and are very useful.
