Quality improvement initiatives are effective only when the organizational structure and culture are aligned with a similar vision for the provision of quality care delivery and a commitment to continuous improvement. Organizations must take an active approach to measure, assess, and improve processes creating an environment supporting quality improvement initiatives (Spath, 2014). The creation of this type of environment should be evident from the top tier of leadership to the front-line employees, creating a culture supporting the delivery and sustainability of quality care. The following paragraphs will identify and discuss the authority structure of the quality improvement plan including the roles and responsibilities of the members involved in the plan implementation. Quality and quality improvement are important to any healthcare organization because these principles allows organizations to fulfill their missions more effectively. Defining what quality is may differ depending on whom is asking the question, as differing participates may have differing ideas about what quality means and why it is important. Being that quality is what unites patients and healthcare organizations, we can see the importance of quality and the need for strong policies and practices that improve patient care and their experience while receiving that care. Giannini (2015) states that this dualistic approach to quality utilizes separate measurements, conformance quality that measures patient outcomes against a set standard and
The purpose of quality initiatives is to promote safe, timely, effective, efficient, equitable patient centered care( DeNisco & Barker, 2013). The quality improvement evaluation is important in the health care industry to find out the best practice care and to provide high quality cost effective care to patients. The public and private agencies are the regulatory entities in the health care Industry which promote quality and safety in the delivery of health care. The major regulatory agencies are CMS, the Joint commission, and AHRQ (deNisco & Barker, 2013).
TQM was developed and utilized in other industries prior to adoption in health care (Shi & Singh, 2015, p.493-494). TQM has since modernized administration, reduced hospital stays, improved clinical outcomes, and improved patient satisfaction (Shi & Singh, 2015, p.493-494). Examples of utilization of the total quality management include improvement of patient safety through prevention of medical error incidences and as a positive influence for organizational learning and improvement. “Using total quality management approach to improve patient safety by preventing medication error incidences” is a study conducted at General Government Hospital to review current medication practices, implement a six sigma method through utilization of a five-step DMAIC procedure to find out the root cause for the errors, and establish solutions to avoid medication error occurrences throughout the hospital (Yousef & Yousef, 2017). The results demonstrated that the root cause was related to mistakes during prescribing due to poor handwriting (Yousef & Yousef, 2017). To decrease these errors, Guideline Recommendations to be followed by all physicians were published (Yousef & Yousef, 2017). This method is useful in decreasing errors during the prescribing phase and prevent the wrong medications from being administered. “Impact of Total Quality Management on Organizational Performance: Exploring the Contingent Effects of Organizational Learning and Innovation” is another article that discusses the importance of total quality management (Proceedings for the Northeast Region Decision Sciences Institute (NEDSI), 2017). Introduction Effectively integrating information technology (IT) into an organization’s business processes is critical if the organization wants to increase productivity and remain profitable. IT includes items such as the systems software, application software, computer hardware, and the networks and databases that help manage the organization’s information. When implementing quality standards and processes that are forever changing in the IT world, organizations must balance these changes while continuing to rapidly implement new systems technologies in order to stay competitive. Quality improvements in IT delivery and service support can be improved by measuring and tracking user satisfaction, integration and flexibility early on in the decision process and reinforcing them throughout the review process. Adhering to quality management best practices means ensuring that quality standards are strictly enforced and entrenched into the organization’s philosophy.
