Steel is everywhere in our homes and all around us. Corus Construction & Industrial (CCI), a business unit of Corus, has steel manufacturing facilities in Scunthorpe, Teesside, Scotland and France. The key markets for CCI include construction, energy and renewables, engineering and machinery, mining and earthmoving equipment, shipbuilding, fastenings and rail. The principle manufacturing site at Scunthorpe covers 2,000 acres and employs 5,500 people. The site consumes 6.5 million tonnes of iron ore and 2 million tonnes of coal each year to produce 4.3 million tonnes of steel products.

Nucor is the world’s largest recycler, recycling over 10 million tons of scrap steel annually. Nucor descended from auto manufacturer Ransom E. Olds, who founded Oldsmobile. The company evolved into the Nuclear Corporation of America, which was involved in the nuclear instrument and electronics business in the 50’s and early 60’s. Over the next five years, Valley Sheet Metal, Vulcraft Corporation and U.S. Semi-conductor Products joined the Nuclear Corporation. After suffering several money-losing years, in 1964 F. Kenneth Iverson was installed as president. Management then decided to integrate backwards into steel making, and in 1972 they adopted the name Nucor. Since then Nucor has established itself as a leader in the steel industry through efficiency and innovation. It now employs more than 7,000 people worldwide and has experienced tremendous growth under its new CEO Daniel R. DiMicco. Founded in 1985, Multigroup is one of the largest producers of steel products in Central America. Multigroup, a privately held company, specializes in the production and commercialization of Steel and it counts with more than five thousand different products. With leading brands in most of its markets, Multigroup operates in Mexico and Central America and exports to more than 15 different countries around the world. The company has its corporate offices in Guatemala city, Guatemala and has more than 1500 employees, 6 factories and 30 stores around the region. In 2013 Multigroup’s revenue exceeded US$100 millions from which 70% came from abroad.

While Coors was initially the leader in proactive innovation in the industry, the period of 1975-1985 was filled with business model decisions that were thoughtful and controlled, but they were too slow to implement in comparison to their competitors. They started this decade of turmoil with a volume drop of 4% in 1975 by selling only 11.9 million barrels as opposed to the previous year’s 12.3 million barrels. For a company that started with exponential growth in the brewing business, Coors surprisingly fell behind entering markets that their competitors were dominating in the meantime. The longer they took to enter the sector, the light beer market for example, the more market share they lost. Their nationwide expansion took far longer than their competitors as well. All major beer brewery distributors in the industry reached 50 states by 1985 except for Coors. The overall loss in the U.S. market from their slow expansion was totaled to 21%. This was not promising especially for a company who used the cost-leadership approach according to Porters Generic
