This story is about and old man named Santiago. He went on a fishing trip

alone on the sea. Old Santiago had fished his whole life, but this trip

turned out to be quite an adventure. Sharks try to eat him and a marlin drags

Santiago far away from land with the fish hook in his mouth. The old man just

holds on and tries to pull the marlin into his small boat, but he just could

not do it. This paper examines the nature of relationships in this story. There are

three relationships in this story, Santiago with Manolin, Santiago with the sea, and

Santiago with the marlin.

The first relationship I'll tell you about is the one between Santiago and a

They did not watch baseball because both of

them were very poor, so they just read the news to see what happened or who won.

They lived in Cuba, so they did not have access to TV's. Manolin, really

loved the old man so he helped him fish and get food. The boy came to help

Santiago because he was really old and lost his luck on getting the fish.

Santiago also had a relationship with the marlin, the fish that dragged him

out into the middle of the ocean. He had a relationship with him because he was

with the fish for two days. The whole time Santiago was trying to pull the marlin

into his boat, but the fish was too strong, and he was too old for fishing alone.

Also, the fish saved the old man from the sharks by pulling the boat far away from

them. Santiago was so unlucky, he could not even get a fish that was stuck on his

hook!

Santiago also had a relationship with the sea. He liked the sea because he

spent his whole life near it and on it. He went fishing and probably even went

swimming in it when he was younger. His whole life revolved around the sea.
