“Society is a republic. When an individual tries to lift themselves above others, they are dragged down by the masses, either by ridicule or slander.” This quote was written by Victor Hugo and this quote is saying that everyone is a whole, but when a person thinks they’re better than others, then others will try to prove them wrong. Others may be better in other things and some maybe have self ambitions but others will use jealous or even peer pressure to bring them down and that leads to consequences like in The Crucible by Arthur Miller. There is many emotions and human failings that lead to tragic consequences from the actions people did like Abigail Williams and John Proctor and in real life situations.
Often, in life nobody really thinks

before doing something, they put their emotions first, which will later causes them regret because it will cause them to have consequences at the end.
A perfect example of this is Adolf Hitler. Adolf Hitler was the leader of Nazi Germany from 1934 to 1945. He initiated World War II and that resulted in millions of deaths. He was very ambition of himself and he thought that he was higher and powerful than anyone else in this world. He blamed Jews that they were the problem of their country and convince that they were bad people to germans and killed many innocent people. He would not let anyone stop him and if someone tries to bring him down then he would just send troops to killed them. And at the end of this whole disaster he ended up having war, him losing the war, and he committed suicide at the end of this whole situation. Another example is one of my friends his name is Nathan. He was a pretty good boy got good grades but when he got to high school he started hanging out with the wrong …show more content…
crowd. He was changing little by little, he stop doing homework and started to ditch with his new friends. One night Nathan and his friends were at Walmart and one of his friends said that they should steal some headphones. But Nathan didn’t want to do it so he was peer pressured into doing because his friends called him names. So they all stole headphones but they got caught. So they called the police and they came and they got arrested and their parents got a called telling them their son was arrested. Later they got bailed out and it was put in their permit record and he ended up getting grounded. Self ambitions and peer pressure can lead to consequences but also human failings and petty jealousies can also. Next, in the Crucible there are many problems and situations.
Each character has their own human failings, jealousy, selfish ambitions or even peer pressure that led to consequences. Abigail Williams is a great example because she had an affair with a married man and put many people in trail that could cause them to have a life or death situation, “The Deputy Governor promise hangin’ if they’ll not confess, John. The town’s gone wild, I think.” (page 193). Also she peer pressures the girls to do things with her and to go along with her even if it means to lie. “(she all the girls run to one wall, shielding their eyes. And now, as though corned, they let out a gigantic scream, and Mary, as though infected, open her mouth and screams with them. Gradually Abigail and the girls leave off, until only Mary is left there.... Proctor strides to her.) Mary tell the Governor what they-, Don’t touch me -don’t touch me! (At which the girls halt at the door) (pointing at Proctor) You're the devil’s man!” (page 226). Abigail also tries to be with a married man even if he told her to leave him alone and she will do anything to be with him, when she wants something she will do anything to get it. Her emotions are doing all the actions, she doesn’t think first before doing anything and later she is going to regret it. Secondly, John Proctor thinks highly of himself because he is known as a good man in the town. One of his human failings is having an affair with a 17 year old girl. After
that it leds him with having trouble forgiving himself and trouble in his marriage, which his wife can trust him and forgive him and making him guilty, “Spare me! You forget nothin’ and forgive nothin’. Learn charity, woman. I have gone tip-toe in this house all seven month since she is gone. I have not moved from there to there without I think to please you, and still an everlasting funeral marches round your heart. I cannot speak but i am doubted, every moment judged for lies, as though I come into a court when I come into this house!” (page 194). Bad decisions from real life situations and The Crucible lead to consequences. Like in the Crucible Abigail Williams and John Proctor their relationship affected each other and Adolf Hitler killing innocent people, caused war and he end up killing himself, and one of my friends Nathan did things he wasn’t suppose to and got caught. The choices you make can affect you and also can lead to consequences like Abigail William, John Proctor, Adolf Hitler, and my friend Nathan.
The Crucible was set in Salem, Massachusetts in 1692. It was set in a little country town full of what everyone thought were good people. When we started reading The Crucible we were introduced to many people from this small town of Salem. There are many pros and cons to living in a small town, but this book shows us many of these pros and cons. The three main characters that we were introduced are Abigail Williams, John Proctor, and Reverend Hale. In this story these characters contributed some of the most irrational things that caused most of the problems in this small town.
The Crucible was a rather strong book, it had battles both internal and external, there were also betrayals and vendettas… but a few stuck strong to their morals of what was wrong, and what was right. After the girl’s acts were, undoubtedly, in the eyes of the law, seen as entirely real, people who would not otherwise have been accused of witchcraft were now eligible to be under Satan’s spell. One John Proctor, saw himself above the nonsense, that witches could not exist in Salem, his wife, his children nor him; But, when Mary Warren said to the court that he used his spirit to drag her into court to testify against the girls, the judges deemed her word more truthful than his. After actively and repeatedly denying the claims, he was sentenced to death, for only a witch could lie in the face of god.
Was The Crucible, by Arthur Miller, just an “irrational fear?” (Arthur Miller’s The Crucible: Fact & Fiction Par.1). The panic of Communism during the Cold War and Senator Joseph McCarthy’s anti-communist hearings on February 3, 1953 led to this “irrational fear.” There are several major differences from the true version of the story and Miller’s version. These differences could have made the whole event much more interesting and eerie. Many specific details were overlooked that could have changed the play around. For example, Parris’ wife was not dead. In Miller’s play he refers to the group of girls as Abigail’s girls, but there were many other girls that were included in the group of the “afflicted”. Another difference that could have reconstructed how the play was is Abigail’s age. Because Miller used different context from the event, the true facts of history could have made the play much more interesting.
John Proctor depicts a courageous individual with an image of a sincere and an honorable man, not only in minds of the Salem community, but also in his own. His death implies more than a “tragedy”, but rather a strong action that inspires and encourages citizens in Salem to follow his footstep for change. Proctor is frustrated at how the court for believing Abigail and not the innocents. He says, “My wife is innocent, except she knew a whore when she saw one! You are pulling Heaven down and raising up a whore!” (Act III). He is infuriated that the officials in the court believe the ridiculous pretenses and acting of the Salem girls, that everyone’s the belief in god seems to be deteriorating.
The Crucible – Characters and Changes & nbsp; Change is good for the future. " We hear the catchy phrase everywhere. From company slogans to motivational speeches, our world seems to impose this idea that change is always a good thing. Assuming that the change is for the better, it is probably a true statement in most cases. The root of this idea seems to come from the notion that we are dissatisfied with the state that we are in, so, in order to create a more enjoyable environment, we adjust.
In The Crucible by Arthur Miller, the madness of the Salem witch trials is explored in great detail. There are many theories as to why the witch trials came about, the most popular of which is the girls' suppressed childhoods. However, there were other factors as well, such as Abigail Williams' affair with John Proctor, the secret grudges that neighbors held against each other, and the physical and economic differences between the citizens of Salem Village.
A forbidden passion between Proctor and Abigail leads to the tragedy of the play. Proctor is a man with a lot of moral problems, who always concerns only the care of his family and social welfare. When avoiding his involvement in the trails of witchcraft, he is accused of witchery and sentenced to death. Arthur Miller shows us Proctor as a common farmer, who is honest, and respectable, who only cares for his family. Proctor lives in the town with his wife and their children.
Great events, whether they are beneficial or tragic ones, bring change in a person. These scenarios can give one an entirely new perspective on life, and turn around his way of thinking. Events such as the Salem Witch Trials show the people involved what they could not see before. In Arthur Miller's The Crucible, Elizabeth Proctor, Reverend Hale, and John Proctor gain valuable insight into themselves, as well as others.
In Miller's, The Crucible, he describes a New England town in the midst of Salem witch-hunt hysteria during the late 1600's. His play not only recounts the historic events but also specifically sheds light on the rationalization for this hysteria. In Miller's running commentary he describes the intent of the Puritans particularly accurately. In one specific statement, he says 'they [the Puritans] believed, in short, that they held in their steady hands the candle that would light the world. We have inherited this belief and it has helped and hurt us.'; This statement proves itself to be particularly profound, for it manages to both accurately describe the actions of the Puritans, and relate it to our world today.
In Salem, during the times of the Salem witch trials, the church and the people were very close. This is what led to the hysteria and chaos which was the Salem witch trials. It also led to many conflicts between the characters in this book, because anyone who was against the church was considered a criminal. Some of these conflicts were between; Abigail and the other children, Danforth and the town folk, and John Proctor with himself and his wife.
As the adolescents wail in their pretentious horror of a fictional bird, Proctor slowly realizes the conformation that Satan has entered Salem. Arthur Miller’s tragic allegory, The Crucible, shows the destruction of sinister Salem in 1692. The protagonist, John Proctor, a damnable farmer, has a lecherous affair with the antagonist, Abigail Williams, an ignorant and covetous juvenile. Satan mixes their interior motives to manufacture a catastrophic concoction. The ingredients of destruction consist of selfishness, immaturity, and corruption. The voracious desires of the natives of Salem lead to their evil and self-indulged intentions.
In conclusion, the acting in the production was very good. I was held captivated by the accents and shocked by the language and dialect because I knew that this really happens and has happened. I felt like I could actually change what was happening on stage. For Instance, when the rumble is happening and Bernardo and Riff bring out the switchblades, I gasped. Silently to myself, I said "DON'T DO THIS. THIS WAS SUPPOSED TO BE A CLEAN FAIR FIGHT. YOU GUYS ARE MORE SIMILAR THAN YOU ARE DIFFERENT, JUST BEING FRIENDS." The same occurrence happened when Anita is assaulted by the Jets when attempting to find Tony to save him. I understood her feelings and wanted the Jets to get in trouble for their actions. I became invested in what happened to the
The Crucible was written in the early 1950s as an exploration of events which took place in Massachusetts in 1692. What does the play have to offer an audience in 2014?
Vengeance is the act of taking revenge for a past wrong. In the Crucible, Thomas Putnam and Abigail Williams both took advantage of circumstances to carry out vengeance against different people.
The witchcraft trials became a significant event in Salem. There were 20 innocent people that died and many more accused. There is a debate on whether who was the main reason for the witchcraft trials and all the deaths of the accused. There are good arguments on about every side. Judge Danforth, Abigail Williams, John Proctor, Reverend Hale, Reverend Parris, Elizabeth Proctor and Mary Warren are all the main arguments for the blame. Personally, I believe that Abigail Williams is the main reason why the witchcraft trials came about and that so many people have died and were accused.
