By dictionary definition a crime is “an act that violates criminal law and is punishable by criminal sanctions,” but to sum up a crime and the criminal justice system involves many different factors. Though a crime may seem straight forward there are many elements that come into play when determining a crime and then convicting someone of a crime. Different cultures view crimes in different ways. What is considered criminal behavior to one society won’t necessarily be considered a crime across the board to all societies. The two common models of how society decides what is and isn’t a crime is called consensus and conflict model. The consensus model is based on the assumption that people will come to agreement based on shared norms and values

Property crime would be considered larceny where the intention is community theft. Others include white collar crime, organized crime and high tech crime. There is also measuring crime to answer how much crime there is in the United States. This includes number of persons arrested, number of crimes reported by victims and witnesses and police employee data.

In constitutional law the legislatures create ordinances passed by cities and countries. Police have four responsibilities. They include enforcing laws, providing services, preventing crimes and preserving the peace. As their role as crime fighters they seek those who violate the law. They provide services by helping those in need whether it’s finding lost children or performing emergency medical services and even directing traffic.
