Conscientiousness in Derek Jeter
Personality Analysis
Author Note
This paper was prepared for Personality Psychology 260, taught by Dr, Kaplan.
Derek Jeter, one of the most respected and admired players and leaders in baseball, is driven by the personality trait conscientiousness. Conscientiousness is defined as “ a character in which the individual values and obeys order and duty, performs with competence, and perhaps, values achievement.” (Mayer, 2007 pg. 284). It is also further defined as a “tendency to show self-discipline, act dutifully, and aim for achievement against measures or outside expectations.” (OED, 2014). Jeter’s hard work, tenacity, and demand to get better and better have helped build his strong, inspiring character, which many players, coaches, and fans look up to him for. An example of Jeter’s conscientious personality shines through from a quote he gave to a newspaper in 1999; “I don’t think you’ll ever sit around and say you’re good, until you bat a thousand with no errors.” Derek Jeter is a positive role model for the young and old, and as Michel Jordan said, “reflects a positive image”, making him an iconic athlete in America (Leung, 2010).
Jeter showed signs of conscientiousness since he began playing baseball. By then end of his first season in the big leagues, he was named rookie of the year (The Official Site of Derek Jeter, 2011). He attributed this to his aim to be the best and achieve all that he could, a value of conscientiousness. This quality of competence lead him to many greater successes on the baseball field including several World Series Championships, All-Star game appearances, and MVP titles as a shortstop. His work ethic as a player is unparalleled to the majority of baseball pl...

Jeter received lots of recognition during his high school years at Kalamazoo Central. Jeter was heavily recruited by Yankees scout Hal Newhouser. After Jeter’s senior season, he received many awards. Among those awards was the 1992 High School Player of the Year for Gatorade, USA today, and the American Baseball Coaches Association. Jeter built up his great confidence through his parents help. Every school year, Derek’s parents would make him sign a contract on the dos and don’ts of Derek’s daily behavior. His parents always tol...
Roberto Clemente once said “I want to be remembered as a baseball player who gave all I had to give.” One could easily say that Roberto Clemente left everything he had on the baseball field, when he played. Roberto Clemente was originally born in a fairly large city in Puerto Rico. Clemente came from humble beginnings. His father was a foreman at a sugar cane plantation, while his mother did little odd jobs such as running the grocery store on the same sugar cane plantation. Clemente even worked on the plantation to help bring in money for his family of nine and to also buy a bicycle. While growing up, Clemente was focused on baseball and track. He even won medals for javelin throwing.
For many years now, my biggest influencer has been Roberto Clemente, who played Major League Baseball in the 60’s and 70’s. Roberto Walker Clemente was born the youngest of seven children to Melchor and Luisa Clemente in Puerto Rico on August 18, 1934. Although growing up poor in Barrio San Anton in Carolina, he was happy and remained very close to his family and to his country and its inhabitants throughout his entire life. Roberto was an industrious young man and worked various odd jobs including milk delivery. He began playing baseball with his brothers and friends and was eventually signed for forty dollars a month by a professional hardball team in the Puerto Rican town of Santurce. His natural ability got him recognized by a Dodger scout and he was signed in 1954 to a minor league team in Montreal. His
Since then he has led his team to five world series titles and become the team captain. He is known for his good looks and quiet confidence. He is still playing shortstop for the Yankee’s today and never stops improving. More world series titles are seen in his future.
Roy’s task is to identify himself so that he may reassume his rightful position as the best baseball player in the game. He earned the position the first time when he struck out the Whammer. After returning to baseball, Roy must again prove himself as the best. First, Roy must earn the respect from his coach and the players before he can attempt to make a name for himself. Once that is accomplished by showing off his hitting talents, Roy Hobbs easily becomes a household name. It takes awhile, but he does become the persistent front-page story.
Albert Pujols said, “Baseball was an outlet for him to be able to do that, and he had some special talent to go through what he did and still set an example for others. You cannot replace it.”
David Ortiz is an icon because of his contributions to the welfare of children and to baseball. His charity raises money to give kids medical care that they need or don’t have access to, and trains doctors and nurses. He has made significant contributions to baseball by changing the designated hitter’s role and donating equipment to children in need. If more wealthy people followed Ortiz’s humanitarian values, many of our current problems like poverty, racism and education imbalance would most likely not exist.
Not only did Jackson work hard, he had great work ethic throughout his career. He was the kind of ballplayer who was the first one to the field, even before the coaches, and the last one to leave the field. Jackson was born with great athletic ability, but that can only go so far for an athlete. Jackson got the rest of his ability from his great work ethic. Every homerun, and touchdown he got, and every track race he won was earned through his work and dedication toward the game. He was not the great athlete who could just show up and score two touchdowns or hit a homerun (Jackson and Schaap 50). Jackson's coaches saw how hard he worked and the greatness he possessed because of it, and they knew he could make it far in the sp...
Derek Jeter, one of the greatest shortstops of all time, once said, “There may be people who have more talent than you, but there’s no excuse for anyone to work harder than you do- and I believe that” (“Jeter”). Sometime later the same man also said, “Your image isn’t your character. Character is what you are as a person” (“Jeter”). Jeter was obviously a guy that believed in hard work all the time, but also realized that he had to be great off the field as well. There have been some spectacular shortstops in the history of baseball, but none greater than the likes of Barry Larkin, Derek Jeter, and Cal Ripken, Jr. They all changed the game in one way or another, but every single one of them had great leadership abilities, a knack for coming
The greatness cannot begin to be quantified in statistics and numbers. Ty Cobb redefined the words hard work and determination by stretching his limited God-given ability to the maximum, and making himself into a baseball legend. Cobb throughout his lifetime insisted that he was "not a super athlete, rather he had a great desire to win." Thus, Ty Cobb’s motivation and determination to excel created a pathway to his success.
In addition, these examples of Kobe Bryant’s Hard work and dedication also relates back to Malcom Gladwell’s book “Outliers”. One of the reasons why it relates back to Outliers is because one of Gladwell’s keys to success involves both hard work and dedication. The 10,000-hour rule.It is clear to see that a huge contributor to Kobe Bryant’s success in the NBA was the amount of hard work and dedication he put towards basketball. However, it wasn’t the only thing that lead to his success in the
It not only demands physical strength, but a great mindset as well. A great mindset includes qualities such as mental preparedness, concentration, and a positive attitude. These qualities show significantly when a baseball player is playing his best, and without them, he cannot play to his full potential and must change his mindset in order to reach it.
Jeter has collected many awards over his 20 year career in in the MLB. jeter won five gold gloves for his fielding skills and in 2004 he was runner up for mvp award in 2009 jeter was awarded the roberto clemente award. jeter won the slugger award five times, Hank Aaron Award 2 times, jeter even made the number two get retired for the yankees. jeter created a charity that would help kids turn away from drinking, and doing drugs the charity was named turn 2 foundation. after jeter retired he launched a website that let pro athletes talk to their fans. But before he got to do any of that his dad (Sanderson Charles Jeter) made him sign a contract stating that he would not argue, drink, do drugs, and disrespect girls. Then after jeter retired he launched a website that let pro athletes talk to their
After doing some research, I do consider Roberto Clemente a Visionary Leader. Not only was he a great baseball player, but he was also a great humanitarian. Roberto Clemente’s motto was “if you have a chance to help others and fail to do so you are wasting your time on this earth” (Biography.com, 2017). Roberto Clemente gave his life to this motto. On December 31, 1972, he boarded a plane to deliver food, clothing and medicine to the victims of a devastating earthquake in Nicaragua. He knew the plane was in bad shape but he still took that risk and got on it. According to the Thomas N. Barnes Center of Enlisted Education [BCEE] (2017c), “Courage should empower you to take necessary personal or professional risks” (p.16). Roberto
(2004), were among the first to challenge Jones et al’s 2002 definition on grounds that the definition didn’t succintly define the construct, but rather it explaned what a mentally tough individual is capcable of. In contrast to Jones et al., they defined mental toughness as “an unshakeable perserverance and conviction toward a commmon goal despite pressure or adversity” (p. 6). The researchers argue that their definition is a better representation of mental toughness because it encompasses a larger sample (33 participants), comprised of a greater variety of sports. Furthermore, all the athletes within the sample had a gold medal or world championship, in their respective sport. Middleton et al’s work goes on to divide the construct into a specific orioentation and strategies of mental toughness. Mental toughness orientation is subdivided into four categories: (a) self-belief, (b) task familiarity, (c) motivation, and (d) goal commitment. Middleton et al. listed three separate characteristics under mental toughness strategy: (a) perserverence, (b) task-specific attention, and (c) emotion
