It is astonishing how humans as a species are able to form communities with their own practices, beliefs, and languages. The number of indigenous people in our world is diminishing everyday. The loss of these people may not be affecting us personally but it is affecting our world’s diversity that comes in many forms and makes us all unique. National Geographic Explorer, Wade Davis, talks about the many indigenous cultures in our world and the experiences he has had with some of them. Sadly, the point he is trying to get across is that these cultures are disappearing. This video complements our reading in the textbook because in our readings we come across how some groups are losing the practices and traditions of their ancestors. They still integrate some of the things they have learned in their own lives, but what is going to happen when their generation dies off and there is no one left to teach the language or beliefs of those who came before them? Watching this video made me realize how important it is to save these cultures because they have been around for many years and are some of the strongest models of how to be …show more content…
This is one of the major problems the indigenous cultures are facing because many of these areas are their homes. Their homes as well as the environment are getting destroyed whether it is to build a hotel for tourist or use the trees for paper or a baseball bat. The ones benefitting from deforestation are the industrialized countries which we belong to. It may not be intentional but we are contributing to the diminishing numbers of these people. I am generally an optimist but I know deforestation is probably impossible to stop. However, we all can take measures to minimize it by for example, taking recycling seriously. Recycling is important because it reduces the need for raw materials and therefore we are able to preserve the land that many of these people live
We can help stop the effects of deforestation by planting more trees, going paperless, and eat vegetarian meals as often as possible. Thirty eight percent of Ontario's wood is used for paper. We can save a lot of trees if people tried and cared more towards the world. In southern Canada they are planting trees where they are being cut. This will keep the amount of trees
This article describes the history of deforestation around the world and explaining how deforestation started as part of a civilizing process. Then the article tells that human populations increase causes deforestation because humans need more land for food, water, and for living purposes. Also in the last part of the article it talks about how the future of deforestation is worse than the present, even with our reforestation efforts the environment is being destroyed to fast for us to stop especially in the
To the indigenous community, country and story creates a strong cultural identity and is the starting point to their education. The second outcome; connected with and contribute to their world, is shown through the experience and learning of the indigenous culture and the history of the country and land they live in. Outcome three; strong sense of wellbeing is shown through enhancing indigenous children’s wellbeing socially, culturally, mentally and emotionally through learning about their heritage, country and history through the stories passed down through generations and gaining a sense of belonging and self identity. Both outcome four and five; confident and involved learners and effective communicators are important as they show a unity and understanding between the indigenous culture through learning about the country and stories together about the indigenous
Deforestation is one of the many problems earth is facing. In most cases trees and plants are the essentials in the lives of us human beings. The forest that is the most damaged is the Brazilian Amazon. Ranchers, loggers, and miners are the cause of the many kilometers of deforestation. Organizations were created to alleviate the problem. In many cases this has helped reduce the deforestation rates.
Deforestation in the Amazon Rainforest: Human degradation and its consequences Deforestation is a word that displays an image of cruelty against nature. In any language, and on every continent, the word deforestation is frowned upon by all social classes, however why it is still happening? The consequences of this act that involves human beings willing to cut down trees, burning plants, and destroy habitats of animals are just actions to satisfy some human being. The Amazon rainforest covers various countries where 60% is in Brazil, and 13% in Peru, and produces 20% of total oxygen in the world. Unfortunately, the political leaders of the countries that make up the Amazon jungle are not interested in its full protection and do not realize that the world health is in their hands.
It is predicted that in approximately forty to one hundred years from now, there will no longer be any rainforest. People have been deforesting the Earth for thousands of years, primarily to clear land for crops or livestock. Deforestation happens in many different ways: when trees are cut down to grow crops, for livestock, logging so wood can be used for building things like houses and furniture, for roads and neighborhoods, for firewood, and forest fires. Deforestation can also be good for farming purposes and making houses.
First of all, deforestation is one of the biggest issues in the world. There are many problems as the result of deforestation. First impact is pollution gases, these gases will be affect the atmosphere in the world because trees always absorb carbon dioxide gas which is really benefit for trees (National Geographic, n.d., pp. 9). Carbon dioxide is gas that used by trees for supplying their food through leaves. The second problem is greenhouse gases. Trees could be balancing in absorbing greenhouse gas because simply trees could absorb carbon dioxide gas. However, if we cannot saving these ...
It is evident that the problem of deforestation is a challenge to stop but despite this, it is more manageable. Preserving intactness of these forests has an association with minimization of drastic climatical changes and fluctuations as well as global warming. In addition, the ecosystem and host habitats remain intact and, as a result, there is no extinction of species or displacement of indigenous communities that live in these
People have been deforesting the Earth for thousands of years, primarily to clear land for crops or livestock. Although tropical forests are largely confined to developing countries, they aren’t just meeting local or national needs; economic globalization means that the needs and wants of the global population are bearing down on them as well. Direct causes of deforestation are agricultural expansion, wood extraction (e.g., logging or wood harvest for domestic fuel or charcoal), and infrastructure expansion such as road building and urbanization. Rarely is there a single direct cause for deforestation. Most often, multiple processes work simultaneously or sequentially to cause deforestation.
Other than that, it is believed that by losing rainforest, we are losing the ancient way of life. Hunting tribes such as the Penan people inhibit these forests. They live on the Borneo Island in the State of Sarawak. These people live in small huts extending a few feet above the ground and live by collecting herbs, fruits and edible plants from the jungle. Furthermore, they hunt for animal especially during special events. However, due to deforestation and globalization, they are forced from this peaceful life to live in dirty government shacks filled with diseases they never encounter before. When they went out for hunting or gathering tribes, they could not resist confronting with the logging companies. Moreover, as forest, being tremendously cut down, wild animals will find new shelter and foraging deep into human settlement areas.
Firstly, Deforestation cause loss of habitat for millions of species. Seventy percent of animals and plants live in forests, and many cannot survive the deforestation that destroys their homes. Many animals that live in the forests are herbivorous, such as giraffes, deer and tapirs, they are enforced to leave what once was their home to search for food. As a result, many starve to death. Other times they wonder out into areas inhabited by humans and get injured. In the meantime, carnivorous animals that prey on herbivorous animals find it more challenging to find food and starved to death however wandering off into human-populated areas can also kill. The damage of just a very small region can therefore lead to the destruction of animal species. Very often animals that live in the forests require specialized habitats. When deforestation happens, these animals have gradually fewer areas in which they can live. Once these areas are destroyed, the species become extinct. Animals promote in balancing our ecosystem, food chain and perform as food for us. Therefore, it is really a disgrace for us to destroy their habitat. Deforestation destroys their natural homes and habitat forcing them to relocate, sometimes they try to move into inhabited area looking for food or shelter a...
Solutions to the Problem of Deforestation Personal: There are many things that one can do personally to rectify the problem of Deforestation. These include such things as using wood sparingly, planting indigenous trees, purchasing the most ecologically sensitive products, recycling paper, reducing consumption of wood related products, communicating your opinions to the proper authorities, calling on forestry companies to act responsibly, and more. Education, however is the most effective catalyst for change, we must respect the forests as living communities not just resources to be exploited. Government: There are many things that governments are doing to rectify this problem. Probably the most effective of these are Forest Protection Schemes, Farm Forestry and plantations, and Raising Awareness/Education.
Indigenous Knowledge (IK) can be broadly defined as the knowledge and skills that an indigenous (local) community accumulates over generations of living in a particular environment. IK is unique to given cultures, localities and societies and is acquired through daily experience. It is embedded in community practices, institutions, relationships and rituals. Because IK is based on, and is deeply embedded in local experience and historic reality, it is therefore unique to that specific culture; it also plays an important role in defining the identity of the community. Similarly, since IK has developed over the centuries of experimentation on how to adapt to local conditions. That is Indigenous ways of knowing informs their ways of being. Accordingly IK is integrated and driven from multiple sources; traditional teachings, empirical observations and revelations handed down generations. Under IK, language, gestures and cultural codes are in harmony. Similarly, language, symbols and family structure are interrelated. For example, First Nation had a
Deforestation is an issue of forests being destroyed either by slash and burn techniques or cutting the trees down. The damage to the Earth that deforestation causes is a major issue that we are facing today. The causes of deforestation are complicated and a challenge to solve. However, we are constantly coming up with new ways to combat deforestation, with new technology. Trying to stop deforestation, and reverse its effects is a difficult task, but many countries are trying, and there are signs of improvement.
To overcome this problem person has to get awareness regarding what deforestation is and what are the effects of it if we continue to practice it on the same scale. Actually, trees are the only source to filter the harmful gasses which are present in the atmosphere and can balance the harmful effects of those
