In Australia, unemployment is recognised as a social problem which affects society in a number of ways. Generally beginning with causing financial damage to families, unemployment can increase to leading to institutional breakdown and, on a macro level, financial harm to the economy. The perspective of conflict theory argues how unemployment can be caused by inequality in society, which is influenced through social class and power. Logically, the members of society who are a part of the higher social class are at an advantage with receiving higher education; wealth assumingly associated with higher class individuals; and in turn, providing easy access in finding employment. The difference in opportunities encourages inequality and indicates that poorer members of society and those of lower social class have a harder time finding employment and receiving suitable education.

Jobs provide income and recognition and allow the community to remain economically stable. For example, an increase in employee earnings leads to a higher rate of consumer spending, which is vital for other businesses who depend on consumer sales to pay vendors. This allows for a healthier local economy and allows small businesses to thrive. The more consumers spend on goods and services, the more available capital a company has to improve its products and product line. Rising unemployment rates are signs of a weak economy with slow growth and minimal spending. However, the social and personal costs of unemployment are more extensive. These include factors such as poverty and debt, family tensions and breakdowns, homelessness, shame and stigma; of which can lead to increased social isolation, and an increase in the possibility of criminal activity (McClelland, A., & Macdonald, F.,
First, class has determined inequality in labor market, because labor market is directly linked with the main source of income for most people, which provides everyday purchase on food, clothing, transport and housing. In Australian labor market, a large number people are employed in middle working class, for example sales, clerical or service job. However, there are a few people working in the top occupations, such...
According to the Objectivist view, a social problem is something that is a real threat to human life (Goode and Ben-Yehuda 1994). That meaning, if something does not harm a large group of people, the threat and therefore the social problem does not
...d supply of high paying jobs benefits the economy because it rewards those who are willing to seek the necessary precautions to reach them, which in turn creates a better stimulated and more productive work force.
A social problem is an issue that is defined by society to be exactly that; an issue. This can range from issues such as murder; which is commonly agreed on in Australia, or to issues such as smoking or loud music being played in parks, where only certain individuals in society see it as a problem. Unemployment in Australia is considered to be a social problem, due to it affecting around 6 percent of Australia’s population (Australian Bureau of Statistics, 2014). If unemployment only affected a few people then it could be said that those individuals being lazy or could not hold down a job, but due to it affecting a majority of society it then becomes a social problem.

Changes in unemployment in Australia is a key issue in this news article. In the last twelve months, unemployment in Australia has dropped from 5.6 per cent to 5.1 per cent which is described as ‘a puzzle’ in the news article. Looking closer, there are some possible explanations for this change in statistics. Previously, unemployment in Australia increased in the time of the recent global economic downturn, although didn’t suffer as poorly as other countries according to data from the Organisation for Economic Co-Operation and Development. However, while unemployment rose, so too did the number of people in other forms of underemployment such as part-time and casual work (OECD, 2010). According to Sappey et. al., the status of employment requires workers to only work one hour per week and so therefore many underemployed workers receive the same employed status in this data as full-time workers (Sappey et. al., 2010, p. 111). According to the OECD, under-employment increased significantly during the downturn, rather than unemployment. Unemployment has dropped in the last twelve months but that does not mean that those who have obtained work have gained full-time employment. In fact, according to the Australia labour market trends of the last twelve months, it is more than likely that those who have become an ‘employed’ statistic rather than ‘unemployed’ have not gained full-time work. This news article quotes figures fro...
For example, some people may believe an airline crash every year could be considered a social problem, but this does not follow the definition of a social problem because it does not affect a large group of people. If planes began crashing all the time, then one may be able to determine whether or not plane crashes are a social problem by looking at claims of the condition. I choose to include the specific criteria, in the previous paragraph, when utilizing my definition of a social problem because I believe that everyone has a subjective outlook on life and although someone may deem something as a social problem, someone else may not feel the same way. I believe discovering the claim and determining how something emerged, as well as discovering why it spread can help direct the general public when deciding if something is a social problem or not. Although claims are important, I still believe a social problem is also something that affects a large group of people. Similarly, I believe a social problem in the United States follows the same definition and criteria but it may be viewed differently. For example, “some societies with large populations of poor people have not viewed poverty as a problem. In contrast, in the United States poverty is considered a social problem” (Best 10). Overall, a social problem in the United States depends on
What is a social problem? A social problem is a problem that affects more than one person in a society. A social problem disrupts the daily life and well being of people in a society. Ryan described a social problem as a problem that affects humans. If a problem affects a human being than it is a social problem. “’What human problem is not a social problem?’” (Ryan 9). Social Problems affect a major part of many individuals’ rights. Some examples of social problems are: sexism, racism, homophobia, and income inequality. In this essay I will be focusing on income inequality and whether this issue is a social problem or an individual problem.
Conflict theory are perspective in sociology psychology that accentuate the social, political, or material inequality of a social group, that analysis the broad socio-political system, or that weaken from structural functionalism and ideological conservatism. With conflict theory, you will see tensions, status, and power are unevenly distributed between groups in society, which these conflicts become the purpose of social change. Conflict theory usually arise due to competition and limited resource that is feed by domination and power, rather than consensus and conformity. This is seen a lot on macro level. As a social worker, you will see and use conflict theory throughout your professional.
There are a multitudinous number of both economic and social difficulties associated with unemployment. One fundamental reason why the government particularly stresses on reducing unemployment levels is as a result it poses a great cost on the economy. Not only does it affect the economy, but also it poses a great threat towards the living standards of the unemployed people itself. This could lead to many receiving less or no income based on whether or not they receive unemployment welfare benefits from the government. Reduction in income, would lead to a less disposable inc...

A social problem is any circumstance or conduct that has undesirable impacts for a huge number of individuals and that is commonly accepted as a condition or behavior that requires to be addressed. The various social problems present today vary from society to society, and as such, we cannot say that all societies face similar social issues. Social problems encompass economic, political, and human life issues within society. Poverty, unemployment, unequal opportunity, racism, and malnutrition are examples of social problems. So are substandard housing, employment discrimination, and child abuse and neglect.
Sociology, which is “the systematic study of human society”, derives from the word society, which refers to “people who live in a defined territory and share a way of life” (Macionis 3). The study of sociology shows us how humans interact, and how they are influenced by their societies. Furthermore, sociology teaches us how the people in our societies can get along with each other and function based on agreements, despite the many conflicts present. While studying sociology, an individual focuses on the factors that affect the beliefs and values of a society, and how societies function.
Ignoring the rough bumps the US has gone through in the past couple of months, the unemployment rate is at an all time low since 2000, the GDP has consistently increased and the CPI is in a safe zone. Aside all of the positives in today’s economy, the GDP still has a long way to go, and is still too low. Additionally, income inequality is ranked 41st-highest among 156 countries, meaning that the rich are much richer than the middle class, and that the poor and much poorer than the middle class. When looking at America as a whole, we are currently in a good state, but have a long way to go. If we keep up the trend and Trump fulfills the positive campaign promises as President, America could become a much better country economic wise.
One of the most life changing effects of unemployment is the loss of income. Especially if they are a single parent of if they have a large family to support. Having no money means eventually having no food, no clothes, no shelter, and no car. It also prevents one from doing many things and activities, even though their amount of leisure time has increased. One might not have money to go to the movies, play on sports’ teams, or do any other recreational things. Being unemployed for a long enough time leads to a lot of debt. Any money that has been saved ends up getting spent rather quickly with all of today’s living expenses. Twenty thousand dollars may seem like a lot of money to some people, but with no income that money gets spent before you know it.
