Conflict of interest means whereby a professional has some kind of vested interests, which makes them an unreliable source. This interest could be anything from money, reputation, know-how or expertise, etc. So, a conflict of interest arises when an individual is involves in multiple interests and one of those interest could possibly corrupt his motivation to do the right thing (Rothman, 2006). Conflict of interest in health care sector exists when the health care professional is influenced intentionally or unintentionally by any financial or personal gain or any other factor that involves high degree of self-interest. But this generally does not happen. The doctor at times give wrong advice. They give advice in which the patient keeps coming back to him for his treatment. This way the doctor earns more and more revenues. Also at times the doctor on the orders of the hospital authorities may recommend surgeries and treatments when in reality they might not be required. This is because the huge cost of surgery will be a direct income to the hospital. The hospital in turn also gives commissions to the doctors for performing high number of surgeries. This is conflict of interest as the doctor on one hand is earning revenues and on other hand is playing with the patients life by going against the rules and standards of the medical fraternity. Many doctors are doing minimal heart surgeries on the patients when they know that the blockage can easily be cured with the help of medicines and dietary changes.
