In today’s society there still exists many injustices, whether it be freedom of speech or equality amongst races. In order to make a change in relation to such issues, one must put themselves forward and inevitably cause conflict. This conflict could be something as large as a war between two countries or simply a debate amongst peers. Whether it be in the form of arguments or gunfire, people are given the opportunity to step forward and demonstrate their true strength. It may have been unnoticeable before, but during moments of great conflict, the admirable traits of strength and determination rise to the surface for all to see. At the conclusion of Green’s ‘The Quiet American’, Thomas Folwer shows his true strength. Initially, his neutrality can be viewed as a weakness. Folwer appears to be incapable of standing up to any challenges, despite the possibility that they may affect him personally. This is demonstrated when Pyle confessed his love for Phuong and Folwer does not express his internalised anger and frustration leaving Pyle to believe that he took it all ‘very well’. Folwer made no attempt dissuade him, he simply let Pyle walk over him and take the only thing he truly cared about. His constant attempt to remain neutral is a clear indication of weakness. It is when Folwer is thrown amongst the horrific bombings in Gardiner Square that he is not only surrounded by great conflict, but his own mind mirrors the chaos enveloping him. It is this ‘moment of emotion’ that his primal urge to take a side shines through and his true strength emerges. He no longer attempts to ‘take no action’ and commits himself wholeheartedly to a cause; the communists. Conflict provides people the opportunity to demonstrate their inner strength and achieve something which can benefit many people’s way of life. ‘The Quiet American’ and the life of Nelson Mandela are two examples of how conflict can result in a positive outcome. Without the turmoil that both Folwer and Nelson Mandela endured, they would never have been able to improve the lives of thousands of people. Furthermore the fact that Nelson was not a literary character demonstrates the way conflict in our society can have a phenomenal outcome for an entire country, and by extension the world.

A conflict can easily be defined as a clash of actions, ideas, desires, and wills. The conflicts of a story can help you differentiate the protagonist from the antagonist. They also help the reader get more involved with the story as they wonder how the problem will get resolved. Conflicts are important in any type of literary fiction. Through Nelson Mandela’s constant fight for freedom of the African people from white apartheid forces, he was dominated by the corrupt government. After uprising numerous riots against apartheid forces, Mandela was sent to jail for twenty-seven years revealing the cruelty that humans can possess. With the strong will power and complete support of the African people, Mandela survived his prison sentence and became the first democratically elected president of South Africa exposing the strength in human nature by showing that humans can persevere through tough times. Mandela left a profound impact on the African people by saving them from corrupt Apartheid rule and bringing a democratic government. Thus teaching the world that in an event where a body of people is suppressed, they will inevitably rebel by any means necessary to gain their freedom.
A group can only be called a team if the members are actively working together toward a common goal. A team must have the capability to set goals, make decisions, solve problems, and share responsibilities. For a team to be successful, trust must be earned between its members by being consistent and reliable (Temme & Katzel, 2005). When more than one person is working on a particular task, inconsistent views or opinions commonly arise. People come from different backgrounds and live through different life experiences therefore, even when working towards a common goal, they will not always see eye to eye. Major conflict that is not dealt with can devastate a team or organization (Make Conflict Work, 2008). In some situations, conflict can be more constructive than destructive. Recognizing the difference between conflict that is constructive to the team and conflict that is destructive to the team is important. Trying to prevent the conflict is not always the best way to manage conflict when working within a team setting. Understanding conflict, what causes it, and how to resolve conflict effectively, should consume full concentration.

Mwangi was raised with a belief that where he lived, you shouldn't confront or argue. In his country, (Kenya,) the ruler, a dictator, would torture, imprison, or even kill anyone who questioned the president's authority. Mwangi explained how in Kenya, it wasn't looked down upon to be a coward; It actually was viewed as a way to survive being the “smart” thing to do.
