We are trapped between tradition and modernity, which is largely a construct of the growing generational gap. Conflict between the opposing concepts provoke issues with older and younger generations. In “Who’s Irish?” by Gish Jen, she explores the distance the generational gap creates through the relationship of a mother and daughter in which both feel entitlement to their teachings towards Sophie. To most the text seems to be about a critical grandmother and the standards she places upon everyone, however it is really about the exploration between the preservation of tradition and modernity caused by the generation gap. She says “ You never take off your clothes when you were little, I say. All my Chinese friends had babies, I never saw one of them act like that . . . The next day we go to the park and, like a nice Chinese girl, she does not take off her clothes.” (9,10). Grandmother has standards of what Sophie should be as a Chinese girl, however Sophie challenges this idea making grandmother distraught. Grandmother appears to have an old school mentality because she has rules that she follows and with Sophie there is a distinction between the two of them, one which is rigid and the other free. After, fixing Sophie’s habit of stripping by spanking despite Natalie’s belief, grandmother is content. So content that she states “Even I am happy, because there is no more trouble with Sophie, But now I think I can help her Chinese side fight against her wild side.” (11). Here we can see grandmother assert her beliefs upon both Natalie and Sophie through disciplining Sophie by spanking, in which she disregards Natalie’s beliefs that symbolize American or modern thinking. Grandmother is depicted as a tragic protagonist that fights to preserve tradition from conflicting modernity. In which she ends up losing the trust of her daughter due to spanking sophie which ultimately leads to Sophie being deserted at a park and grandmother kicked out. If this story teaches anything, it shows that as a result of confliction between two contrast beliefs that it can come in the way of family and ruin relationships and that we should set aside our ideals and look at situations
This essay will contrast a good and evil concept between two different stories. There is an obvious distinction that stands out between the stories; however they are similar in one way. In A Worn Path (Eudora Welty) and A Good Man is Hard to Find (Flannery O’Conner) the one thing that sticks out, is the main character in both stories. The main character in both stories being the grandmother. Grandmothers are of course an important part of the family. In each story we have a grandmother of a different race, appearance, and attitude. In each story the grandmothers take different journeys, but there is one thing they both face being treated disrespected. We live in a world in which the grandmother resides with the family and helps to take care of the grandchildren. In the world today things are different and times are still hard if not harder. We live in a time when respect is no longer earned. Now days it seems as if respect is not as important as it was in earlier years and it is evident in these two stories.

The grandmother is the central character in the story "A good man is hard to find," by Flannery O'Connor. The grandmother is a manipulative, deceitful, and self-serving woman who lives in the past. She doesn't value her life as it is, but glorifies what it was like long ago when she saw life through rose-colored glasses. She is pre-scented by O'Connor as being a prim and proper lady dressed in a suit, hat, and white cotton gloves. This woman will do whatever it takes to get what she wants and she doesn't let anyone else's feelings stand in her way. She tries to justify her demands by convincing herself and her family that her way is not only the best way, but the only way. The grandmother is determined to change her family's vacation destination as she tries to manipulate her son into going to Tennessee instead of Florida. The grandmother says that "she couldn't answer to her conscience if she took the children in a direction where there was a convict on the loose." The children, they tell her "stay at home if you don't want to go." The grandmother then decides that she will have to go along after all, but she is already working on her own agenda. The grandmother is very deceitful, and she manages to sneak the cat in the car with her. She decides that she would like to visit an old plantation and begins her pursuit of convincing Bailey to agree to it. She describes the old house for the children adding mysterious details to pique their curiosity. "There was a secret panel in this house," she states cunningly knowing it is a lie. The grandmother always stretches the truth as much as possible. She not only lies to her family, but to herself as well. The grandmother doesn't live in the present, but in the past. She dresses in a suit to go on vacation. She states, "in case of an accident, anyone seeing her dead on the highway would know at once that she was a lady." She constantly tries to tell everyone what they should or should not do. She informs the children that they do not have good manners and that "children were more respectful of their native states and their parents and everything else." when she was a child.
The grandmother; is not godly, prayerful, or trustworthy but she is a troublesome character. She raised her children without spirutuality, because she is not a believer, she is Godless.
The grandmother is portrayed as being a selfish self-involved woman who wants her way, a person with little memory, just a basic old woman living with her only son. The Misfit on the other hand is a man who feels he has done no wrong, but has just been in the wrong place at the wrong time, but in the end comes too close to the truth, which scares him.
Kingston’s mother takes many different approaches to reach out to her daughter and explain how important it is to remain abstinent. First, she tells the story of the “No Name Woman”, who is Maxine’s forgotten aunt, “’ Now that you have started to menstruate, what happened to her can happen to you. Don’t humiliate us. You wouldn’t like to be forgotten as if you had never been born”’ (5), said Maxine’s mother. Kingston’s aunt was murdered for being involved in this situation. The shame of what Kingston’s aunt brought to the family led them to forget about her. This particular talk-story is a cautionary tale to deter Kingston from having premarital sex and to instill in her fear of death and humiliation if she violates the lesson her mother explained to her. Kingston is able to get pregnant but with the lecture her mother advises her with keeps her obedient. Brave Orchid tells her this story to open her eyes to the ways of Chinese culture. The entire family is affected by one’s actions. She says, “‘Don’t humiliate us’” (5) because the whole village knew about the pregnant aunt and ravaged the family’s land and home because of it. The grandmother played a good game. She learned from her mistakes and found new approaches to manipulate her targets. Every action she took in the story were to benefit herself. While the grandmother was “Confucian born and trained, and a Buddhist and all” (Meyer, 74), she seems to have dropped these strict ideals and somewhat accepted her granddaughters American culture. The main characters in this story are a generation of mothers and their daughters. This story is told in sections as a narrative, where each chapter is recounted by a different woman. The mothers speak of their experiences growing up under the strict conditions in China. They told of how their marriages were predetermined and how they had to do as any male ordered. The daughters, on the other hand, being raised under American ways, told of their hardships with pressure given to them by their mothers. They spoke of American husbands, equality between both sexes, and how they’d rather believe that their futures could indeed be controlled.
