Recently, the National Football League (NFL) has been under fire about the upcoming movie “Concussion”. The movie is about how the NFL negatively reacted towards Dr. Bennet Omalu when he discovered the traumatic brain disease Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE). CTE is a disease caused by repetitive brain trauma or concussions. The NFL has been criticized because they did not want the public to know about the disease. The symptoms of this disease include memory problems, impaired judgement, and depression (BU CTE Center). Athletes can carry traces of CTE in their brain from as young as toddler ages, but symptoms will not show until their active routines have subsided. “The National Football League is producing a poster that bluntly alerts its players to the long-term effects of concussions, using words like “depression” and “early onset of dementia” that those close to the issue described as both staggering and overdue.” Schwarz explains that the poster will be in locker rooms league wide to warn athletes. With this change in warning the athletes the NFL tries to protect themselves from the retired players who claim they suffer from long term damage of football injuries during their time in the league. Dr. Thom Mayer, the union’s medical director states for the article, “This is a clear step forward in educating players.” Schwarz goes on to explain the details of the poster which include symptoms of concussions and also the updated policies regarding injured players.
