Negative impacts with concentrated animal feeding operations

Runoff from Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations, farms where animals are fed a plethora of drugs including antibiotics and hormones, are contributing large amounts of drug contamination to the water supply (Powell). Much of this runoff comes from biowaste and manure produced by large farm animals. It has been found that states with more CAFOs experience higher numbers of contamination problems every year (Hribar). The waste that these farm animals produce not only contains hormones, but more significantly, dangerous nitrates. According to the EPA, “Animal agriculture manure is a primary source of nitrogen and phosphorus to surface and groundwater” (Estimate). The nitrogen produced naturally in addition to that excreted from animals becomes dangerous because it is soluble, and it easily infiltrates the animals and the water supply. Animal waste changes the pH of our water, contaminates our air; and the gases emitted are believed to be a major cause of global warming. To keep costs down, the modern animal farming practice is to raise livestock in feedlots and factory farms where thousands or tens of thousands of animals are crowded into small spaces. Which leads to a bigger problem for some scientist and doctors. The livestock are often in conditions that are unfavorable, such as cramped areas or even standing in their own feces. Pharmaceutical waste seems to be one of the dominant elements that are prevalent in our waters, and other aspects of the environment. These aforementioned elements are largely becoming a concern in today’s society because its effects have proven to be harmful towards our environment, and all of its existing forms of life. Through various ways, whether controllable or uncontrollable, pharmaceutical waste slowly and increasingly multiplies its presence within the environment. Additionally, it eventually trickles down into our waterways and causes a large array of damages. Some of the most common ways that this waste gets into the water includes: disposal through the drainage systems, farming fertilization methods and the maintenance of treatment plants. These methods are self-explanatory through their brief discussions, but it helps decipher whether the disposal of these dangerous wastes are intentional or not.
